It goes wrong, leaving them to deal with an accidental injury—and then fall back into an argument about household chores. A behind-the-scenes account attributed to co-creator and cast member Mark Duplass says the scene was filmed with three cameras, but that detail survives here through a secondhand reproduction, not directly confirmed production documentation.
What happens in the “Handcuffs” scene?
Michelle tries to bring Brett into a spanking scenario. The awkward role-play turns into an accidental blow; she asks him to get ice, and their exchange slips into a familiar dispute about domestic chores. The sequence is not presented simply as a sexual gag: its comedy comes from the way an attempted intimate moment collapses into practical discomfort and everyday bickering.
The A.V. Club’s review reads the scene as revealing how hard it is for the married couple to connect, even as their affection for one another remains. The episode script supports the broad order of events, though a script can establish the sequence on the page, not how the finished scene plays on screen.
Why were three cameras reportedly used?
A NeoGAF forum post reproduces text attributed to an Entertainment Weekly behind-the-scenes report. In that account, Duplass says the scene used three cameras because a single camera might capture an unhelpful angle. The original Entertainment Weekly article was not directly retrieved, so the camera count should be treated as a reported production detail rather than independently verified documentation.

The same forum post reproduces a Duplass remark that the scene reflected a desire to preserve naturalism while allowing strange comic turns in ordinary life. That is the reported intent; it is distinct from the scene’s on-screen effect. Because the wording comes through a forum’s reproduction of the report, it should not be treated as a directly checked quotation.
Where does the scene fit in the series?
Togetherness ran for two seasons on HBO, from 2015 to 2016. The spanking sequence is a small domestic episode within that relationship story: an attempt at intimacy turns uncomfortable, but the couple’s familiar patterns reassert themselves almost immediately. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists HBO Max as a streaming option; availability can change by date and region.
