A strong channel bio tells a new visitor who the channel is for, what they will find there, and what to do next. Write it in plain, specific language, adapt it to each platform’s profile fields, and use the platform’s dedicated link field when one is available.
What a channel bio needs to say
Think of the bio as a brief orientation for someone who has just landed on your profile. The University of Houston’s Social Media Profile Guidelines describe a bio as a one- or two-sentence description that can set the tone for the content.
- Who it is for: Name the audience or community in words they will recognize.
- What the channel shares: State its recurring topic, format, or practical value.
- Why this channel: If space allows, add one true distinguishing detail, credential, or personality cue.
- What to do next: Offer one relevant action, such as watching a featured series, subscribing, or visiting a page.
Specific descriptions are more informative than broad claims such as “the best content” or “something for everyone.” Treat this as a writing framework, not a guaranteed way to increase followers or clicks; a measurable effect for a particular bio formula has not been established in the cited guidance.
Draft the bio before adapting it to platforms
- Write for the intended visitor. Identify the audience in everyday language rather than relying on an internal label or slogan.
- Describe what appears on the channel. Name subjects, formats, or outcomes people can expect. Be accurate about what you publish and how often you publish if you mention frequency.
- Add one credible point of distinction. Choose a real focus, perspective, or qualification. Leave out superlatives and credentials you cannot substantiate.
- Choose one next step. Make it clear and relevant. If the platform provides a profile-link field, put the destination there rather than crowding the bio with a long URL.
- Trim and verify. Remove filler, check spelling and factual claims, and test the text in the platform’s live editor before saving.
A useful starting pattern is: “For [audience]: [what the channel shares or helps them do]. [One distinguishing detail.] [One next step].” It is a prompt for a first draft, not a required formula; change the order or wording to fit the channel’s voice and the platform’s space.

Adapt the bio to each platform
The University of Glasgow’s social media account guidance lists Instagram’s bio limit as 150 characters. Treat that as a platform specification reported in the guide, not as a target length or a guarantee that the interface has not changed. Check the current editor before publishing. The guide’s advice about searchable, consistent names is specific to university departments; it should not be treated as a universal naming rule for every channel.
YouTube
YouTube channel information is managed in YouTube Studio’s Profile area. YouTube’s channel profile guidance describes adding a channel description and profile links there. A channel can showcase up to 14 profile links, and the first is displayed prominently. Use a concise description for the channel’s purpose and put destinations in the link area where appropriate.

Do not confuse the channel bio with a video description. YouTube’s separate video description guidance discusses the first lines of a video description and relevant keywords; it does not establish a channel-bio character limit. In particular, the video-description limit is not a bio limit.
Other platforms
Field names, character counts, visibility, and link behavior differ and can change. Check each platform’s current profile editor or official help before adapting your copy. Avoid assuming that a character limit or link feature from one service applies to another.

Compare two drafts before choosing
When two versions both fit, assess them against the same practical criteria rather than guessing which formula will perform better:
- Can a visitor identify the intended audience quickly?
- Does the wording explain what the channel actually publishes or offers?
- Are every claim and credential accurate?
- Does the text fit the platform’s limit and profile layout?
- Is the next step useful and easy to follow?
There is no sourced universal winning formula for bios. Choose the draft that communicates more clearly and truthfully within the space available.

Check the finished profile
- Read the bio as a new visitor: does it explain the channel without requiring inside knowledge?
- Confirm that the call to action matches the destination in the profile link.
- Preview the profile on mobile and desktop where possible; profile layouts can differ by screen.
- If the profile uses an image or cover, make sure it is recognizable and legible at both sizes. The University of Houston’s guidelines also discuss profile visuals.
- Revisit the copy when the channel’s focus, link destination, or platform fields change.
Or let it run in the cloud
