Start with the reason your audience should join, then build a small, welcoming server around what members will actually do. Enable Discord’s Community features, organize channels around member needs, configure Community Onboarding to suggest channels and assign roles, publish clear rules, and set moderation controls before sharing a public invite.
1. Decide what members are joining to do
Write a one-sentence purpose for the server. Then list the main activities it should support: discussion, questions, feedback, announcements, events, or access to creator resources. This makes it easier to decide which channels belong in the first version and which can wait.
Give new members a clear first step. A creator community might invite people to introduce themselves, discuss a recent release, ask a question, or share work. These are examples, not Discord requirements; choose activities that fit your audience and the community you want to host.
2. Enable Discord’s Community features
- Open the server menu and select Server Settings.
- Select Enable Community and complete Discord’s setup.
- Provide a rules or guidelines channel and a moderator-only channel for Discord Community updates, and complete the required safety checks.
- Make sure the server complies with Discord’s Community Guidelines.
Community can be disabled later from its settings if you no longer need its features. Discord’s setup and requirements are described in its Community server help page.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Build a channel layout around member tasks
Make the spaces a newcomer needs easiest to find. A creator might begin with channels such as announcements, introductions, general discussion, questions, and feedback or work-sharing. Add a channel only when it serves a distinct purpose; a long list of empty or overlapping spaces can make it harder for new members to choose where to participate.
Discord’s onboarding guidance includes examples such as discussion, polls, giveaways, forums, and LFG channels. Treat these as options rather than a checklist: select only spaces that match your community’s activities.

4. Configure Community Onboarding
Community Onboarding is Discord’s built-in flow for helping new members find channels and, through their answers, receive roles. It is the native feature behind the welcome process that asks questions and offers role choices.
- Open Server Settings > Onboarding.
- Select the default channels new members should see. Favor active, welcoming spaces that help people understand the community and join in.
- Create short questions and answer choices. Connect relevant answers to channels or roles—for example, a choice about members’ interests can surface the right discussion spaces.
- Preview the experience as a new member. Confirm that each answer leads to the intended channels and role access.
Discord’s current onboarding FAQ says setup requires at least 7 default channels, of which at least 5 must let @everyone view and send messages. These are eligibility thresholds, not a recommendation to create extra channels for engagement. The requirements can change, so check the current settings and Onboarding FAQ when setting up your server.

Keep the choices easy to scan. Discord recommends prioritizing useful, welcoming default channels, avoiding too many or overly long answers, and making most member channels available either as defaults or as onboarding choices. An optional follow-up question can help members find interest areas or choose notification roles without making every choice compulsory.
5. Publish rules and choose whether to require acknowledgment
Put the rules somewhere members can find them, and make them concrete: describe the behavior expected in discussion, how members should treat one another, and what happens when rules are broken. The server owner—not Discord’s setup flow—must decide the standards and how to enforce them.

If you want prospective members to acknowledge the rules before participating, enable Rules Screening under Safety Setup after Community is enabled. Discord’s FAQ states that Rules Screening supports up to 16 server rules; see the Rules Screening FAQ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Prepare moderation before inviting the public
Set moderation controls before a public invite reaches a wider audience. Discord’s AutoMod can detect or block unwanted content and route alerts to a private moderator channel. Check that moderators can access that channel and that alerts go somewhere they will see them.

For discoverable communities or servers using public invites, Discord Safety recommends anti-spam and text filters or AutoMod keyword filters, along with some form of member verification. Choose controls appropriate to your server and have a human review context-sensitive cases: an automated filter can flag content, but it does not replace a clear moderation process. See Discord’s guidance on spam and hacking and Safety Center.
7. Test the experience before sharing an invite
Use the Onboarding preview and inspect the server from a new member’s perspective. Check that a newcomer can find the purpose and rules, choose relevant channels, and locate the main activity without needing a personal tour. If a question is confusing or an option adds friction without helping members, revise or remove it. Previewing and keeping choices concise are part of Discord’s Onboarding recommendations.
Where a YouTube channel fits into your creator community
If your creator work includes a YouTube channel, you can share its videos or live-stream schedule in Discord announcements. For a prerecorded video that should run continuously as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate option: it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start a free day.
