Yes—you can watch TV privately with wireless headphones. Pair them directly with a TV that supports Bluetooth audio, connect a Bluetooth transmitter to a TV without that feature, or use the headphone mode built into a compatible Apple TV, Google TV, or Roku device. The right method depends on the TV’s audio outputs and which device is playing the program.

The four ways to hear TV through wireless headphones

You can watch TV with wireless headphones in one of four ways:

  1. Pair Bluetooth headphones directly with a compatible TV.
  2. Pair them with a streaming device such as Apple TV 4K, Google TV, or a compatible Roku.
  3. Connect a Bluetooth transmitter to the TV if the television does not support Bluetooth audio.
  4. Use Roku Headphone Mode or the Roku mobile app for private listening.

The most reliable choice depends on where your program originates. Headphones paired directly with a TV generally receive the television’s selected audio output. Headphones paired with a streaming box usually receive audio only from that box. A transmitter connected to the TV’s audio output is usually the best option for a television without Bluetooth, especially when you also watch cable, discs, or game consoles.

First identify where the sound comes from

Before buying anything, identify the device playing the program:

Swiitech Wireless TV Headphones with Charging Dock, 45H Playtime, Black
  • Wireless headphones designed for clear TV conversations: Seniors and the hearing impaired can hear every word without raising the volume. Audio enthusiasts get cinema-grade sound. Late-night viewers won't disturb anyone's rest.
  • Ultra-low latency & long-range transmission: Experience less than 40ms latency for perfectly synced audio and video—ideal for live sports, so you catch every comment, cheer, and exciting moment. With a stable 100ft (30m) range, move freely between rooms without signal drop for a truly immersive experience.
  • Use as standard Bluetooth headphones: When you're not watching TV, simply pair them with your phone or computer for wireless listening. A single charge delivers up to 45 hours of use. Low on battery? Just place them back on the charging dock for a quick recharge.
  • Multiple connection options: Simply plug in the included optical, AUX, or RCA cable and power on—no complex setup required. If your TV doesn't have these ports, you can also connect the headphones via Bluetooth (TV must support Bluetooth). Easy, flexible, and hassle-free.
  • Lightweight and comfortable: Crafted from lightweight materials with soft, breathable earcups, these TV headphones reduce fatigue even during extended use. They make a thoughtful gift for parents or seniors, helping them enjoy TV time in greater comfort and clarity.
  • The TV’s built-in streaming apps
  • A cable or satellite box
  • A game console
  • A Blu-ray or DVD player
  • An external streaming device such as Apple TV, Google TV, or Roku

This matters because a streaming device’s headphone feature may not carry audio from other devices connected to the television. For example, Roku mobile Headphone Mode is limited on Roku Streambar products to the built-in streaming player; it does not provide private listening for external game consoles, Blu-ray players, cable boxes, or satellite boxes in that configuration.

Option 1: Pair Bluetooth headphones directly with the TV

Direct pairing is the simplest method when the television supports the Bluetooth audio profile required by headphones. Turn on the headphones, place them in pairing mode, and open the TV’s sound-output settings.

Samsung TVs

On supported Samsung models, open the sound-output menu and look for Bluetooth Speaker List. A typical path is:

Settings > Sound > Sound Output > Bluetooth Speaker List

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Select the headphones from the list and confirm pairing. Menu names and available options vary by model, region, and software version. If Bluetooth Speaker List is not present, the TV may not support Bluetooth audio, or the feature may be unavailable while a particular audio system is selected.

LG TVs

On current LG guidance, the path is:

Settings > All Settings > Sound > Sound Out > Bluetooth Devices > Connectable Devices

Sony Android TV and Google TV models

Sony states that compatible Android TV and Google TV models need support for the Bluetooth A2DP audio profile to use Bluetooth headphones or speakers. Bluetooth being present in the TV does not automatically mean that it supports Bluetooth audio output.

What happens to the TV speakers?

Do not assume that headphones and the television’s internal speakers will play simultaneously. Many TVs mute their speakers when Bluetooth headphones connect. Whether both outputs can remain active depends on the TV model, connection type, and audio settings. Some transmitter-based optical configurations can provide simultaneous output, but this is also model-dependent.

Option 2: Use a Bluetooth transmitter for a TV without Bluetooth audio

If your TV has no Bluetooth audio function, a Bluetooth transmitter for TV can send sound from the television to wireless headphones. This is different from a Bluetooth receiver: a transmitter must be designed to send audio to headphones.

A transmitter receives audio through one of the TV’s available outputs, commonly:

  • Optical digital audio, also called TOSLINK
  • 3.5 mm headphone or audio output
  • Left/right RCA or AUX output

Connect the transmitter to the matching TV output, put the transmitter into transmit or pairing mode, and then put the headphones into pairing mode. The exact cable depends on the port on your TV and the input supported by the transmitter.

Check these three things before buying

  1. The TV’s available output: Check the rear or side panel for optical, 3.5 mm, or red-and-white left/right audio ports.
  2. The device’s direction: Confirm that it is a Bluetooth transmitter, not a Bluetooth receiver intended to add Bluetooth headphones to a phone or stereo.
  3. Latency and codec support: Bluetooth can introduce a delay between the picture and sound. Look for a transmitter and headphones designed for low latency, but do not assume that any combination will be perfectly synchronized.

After confirming your TV’s output, compare a low-latency Bluetooth TV transmitter that supports the appropriate input. If the TV has an optical port, you may also need an optical audio cable for TV. The cable and transmitter must match the TV’s connection and audio format.

Optical setup: use PCM if there is no sound

Optical connections may produce no sound when the television sends a format the transmitter cannot decode. In the TV’s digital-audio settings, change the output from Auto or Dolby to PCM, then test the headphones again. PCM is also often the better choice when using Bluetooth, optical audio, or internal speakers with an LG television.

For an optical connection, check that both ends of the cable are fully inserted and that any protective caps have been removed. Confirm that the TV’s digital audio output is active and that the transmitter is receiving power.

Option 3: Pair headphones with a streaming device

This is a good solution when you watch most programs through one streaming box and do not need headphones for other sources connected to the TV.

Apple TV 4K

On Apple TV 4K, open:

Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth

Put the headphones in pairing mode, select them when they appear, and follow the on-screen instructions. The headphones will receive audio from the Apple TV. This does not automatically make them an audio output for a cable box, game console, or other device connected directly to the television.

Choose the headphones and complete pairing. Google states that only one audio device can be connected at a time, so do not expect to use two independent Bluetooth headphones simultaneously through this method.

Roku direct Bluetooth Headphone Mode

Some Roku devices support direct Bluetooth headphones through:

Settings > Remotes & devices > Wireless headphones

Roku compatibility is model-specific. Its current support information includes selected Roku Streambar products, newer Streaming Stick models, selected 2025 Roku TVs, Roku Plus Series TV, and Roku Pro Series TV. Several other Roku products are excluded. Check the exact Roku model before purchasing headphones or replacing another device; a Roku logo alone does not guarantee direct Bluetooth Headphone Mode.

Roku mobile Headphone Mode

Roku can also send private audio to headphones already paired with a phone or tablet through the Roku mobile app. The phone or tablet and Roku device must be connected to the same wireless network. Open the Roku app, connect to the Roku device, and activate the headphone or private-listening control.

Roku documents support for up to four mobile devices using mobile Headphone Mode simultaneously. This feature is separate from direct Bluetooth pairing, and its availability depends on the Roku model and configuration. On Roku Streambar products, mobile Headphone Mode applies to the built-in streaming player rather than external devices such as cable boxes or game consoles.

Troubleshooting wireless TV headphones

The headphones do not appear in the pairing list

  • Put the headphones into pairing mode rather than merely turning them on.
  • Disconnect them from a phone, tablet, computer, or another nearby device. An existing connection can prevent the TV from finding them.
  • Move the headphones close to the TV or streaming device during pairing.
  • Restart the headphones and TV, then search again.
  • Confirm that the TV supports Bluetooth audio, not just Bluetooth accessories such as keyboards or remote controls.

The headphones connect but there is no sound

  • Set the TV’s sound output to Bluetooth or to the output connected to the transmitter.
  • Make sure the transmitter is in transmit mode.
  • For optical audio, change the TV’s digital output to PCM.
  • Check the optical cable, 3.5 mm plug, or RCA connectors.
  • Raise the headphone volume and verify that the headphones are not muted.
  • If using a streaming device, confirm that the program is playing through that device rather than through another TV input.

The TV speakers stopped working

This may be normal. Many TVs switch away from their internal speakers when Bluetooth headphones connect. Simultaneous TV-speaker and headphone output is not universal. Look for a TV-specific option such as simultaneous audio output, but do not assume it exists. A supported transmitter or optical configuration may offer more flexibility than direct Bluetooth pairing.

The sound is behind the picture

Wireless audio can have lip-sync delay. Look for an audio-delay or synchronization control on the TV, transmitter, or headphones. Use a transmitter and headphones with compatible low-latency technology where possible, but compatibility between the two devices matters. Sony warns that some transmitter and headphone combinations can produce unsynchronized video and audio, particularly in configurations involving non-BRAVIA XR televisions.

If the delay remains unacceptable, try a different transmitter-headphone combination, use the TV’s built-in Bluetooth implementation if it supports latency adjustment, or consider a dedicated wireless TV-audio system designed around the television.

Can two people listen at once?

Do not assume that a TV can pair with two Bluetooth headphones. The number of simultaneous audio devices depends on the TV, streaming device, transmitter, and software. Google TV and Google TV Streamer support only one connected audio device according to Google. Roku mobile Headphone Mode is a notable exception that can support up to four mobile devices on compatible setups, but that is not the same as every Roku device supporting four direct Bluetooth headphone connections.

Wireless headphones and hearing assistance

Headphones can let one person listen without turning up the room’s speakers, which may be useful in a shared living space. Ordinary Bluetooth headphones are not automatically hearing-assistance equipment, however. If hearing loss is involved, check the television’s accessibility settings, hearing-aid compatibility, and advice from an appropriately qualified professional. A dedicated TV-audio or hearing-assistance system may provide controls and compatibility that ordinary Bluetooth headphones do not.

Quick checklist

  • Identify whether the audio comes from the TV, a cable box, console, disc player, or streaming box.
  • Check whether the TV has a Bluetooth audio menu such as Bluetooth Speaker List, Bluetooth Devices, or an A2DP-compatible implementation.
  • Try direct pairing only when the TV supports Bluetooth headphones.
  • If it does not, identify the TV’s optical, 3.5 mm, or RCA/AUX output.
  • Buy a Bluetooth transmitter, not a receiver, and match its input to the TV.
  • Set optical output to PCM if the transmitter produces no sound.
  • Expect possible speaker muting and check for lip-sync delay.
  • For Apple TV, Google TV, and Roku, verify that the device’s headphone feature applies to the content source you use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every smart TV work with Bluetooth headphones?

Not necessarily. Some smart TVs have Bluetooth for remotes or keyboards but do not support Bluetooth audio. Look for a sound-output option such as Bluetooth Speaker List or Bluetooth Devices, or check the TV’s specifications for the A2DP audio profile.

How do I connect wireless headphones to a TV without Bluetooth?

Use a Bluetooth transmitter connected to the TV’s optical, 3.5 mm, or RCA/AUX audio output. The transmitter must support sending audio; a Bluetooth receiver is not the right device.

Can I use TV speakers and Bluetooth headphones at the same time?

Usually, no. Many TVs mute their internal speakers when Bluetooth headphones connect. Simultaneous output depends on the specific TV and connection setup, so check the model’s audio settings or use a supported transmitter configuration.

Can Roku send TV sound to wireless headphones?

Yes, but only on compatible Roku models and configurations. Roku also supports mobile Headphone Mode through its app, where headphones paired with a phone or tablet receive the Roku audio. The phone and Roku must be on the same wireless network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For a Bluetooth-capable TV, pair the headphones through the TV’s sound-output menu. If the TV lacks Bluetooth audio, connect a Bluetooth transmitter to its optical, 3.5 mm, or RCA/AUX output. Pairing headphones with Apple TV, Google TV, or a compatible Roku is convenient when that device supplies the program, but it may not cover other inputs such as cable boxes or game consoles.
