If you have seen the films before and want to follow their main story periods instead, use the approximate chronology below. The films do not fit one perfectly consistent timeline.
Release order: the best choice for a first watch
This 14-film list covers the Fox-era X-Men and related Wolverine and Deadpool films, including the 2024 crossover Deadpool & Wolverine. The two 2016 releases are ordered by their theatrical release dates.
- X-Men (2000)
- X2: X-Men United (2003)
- X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
- X-Men: First Class (2011)
- The Wolverine (2013)
- X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
- Deadpool (2016)
- X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
- Logan (2017)
- Deadpool 2 (2018)
- X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
- The New Mutants (2020)
- Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
The official Disney+ Japan X-Men guide lists the connected X-Men and Wolverine films through Dark Phoenix in release order. TechRadar and TheWrap include the broader list with the Deadpool films.
Approximate chronological order
This order follows each film’s principal story period, not every flashback or strand. It is a useful alternative for a rewatch, but not a claim that every film belongs to one seamless canon.

- Logan — 2029.
The first two Deadpool films and Deadpool & Wolverine are left out of this approximate chronology rather than given misleadingly precise positions. Their placement is harder to express cleanly within the other films’ branching timeline; TechRadar also notes the difficulty of fitting Deadpool into a chronology. Days of Future Past itself contains two periods, and guides differ in how they group films around its reset. Disney+ Japan separates the original timeline from the later altered one, while other guides order films by broad story year.
Why the timeline branches
First Class starts a prequel strand
X-Men: First Class begins the younger Xavier and Magneto story in 1962. Its prequel strand continues into the 1973 events of Days of Future Past.

Days of Future Past changes the future
The film moves between 1973 and 2023. Its past storyline alters the future, which is why the later prequels—Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix—are commonly described as part of an altered timeline. This hinge is one reason release order is easier for newcomers to follow.
Continuity is not fully reconciled
The films contain contradictions, including conflicting details about Xavier’s history and separate Phoenix storylines in Dark Phoenix and The Last Stand. TheWrap discusses these continuity problems in its X-Men viewing guide. Treat the chronology as a viewing aid, not a definitive continuity fix.

Which order should you choose?
| Viewing approach | Best for | What it prioritizes |
|---|---|---|
| Release order | First-time viewers | The sequence audiences encountered the films, including the timeline reveal and reset. |
| Approximate chronology | Returning viewers focused on story periods | The main in-story years, while accepting timeline branches and continuity conflicts. |
Disney+ Japan and TechRadar recommend release order for first-time viewers; chronology is the more complicated alternative.
