What you are actually watching
The famous Telnet experience converts scenes from A New Hope into moving characters displayed in a terminal window. The result is deliberately retro: recognizable shapes and motion made from text rather than pixels.
This distinction matters. The command does not download or play a movie file, and it does not provide the original soundtrack, dialogue, picture quality, subtitles, or interactive streaming controls. It opens a network connection to a public Telnet server that sends the ASCII animation to your terminal.
Windows: watch Star Wars in Command Prompt or PowerShell
- Open Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Windows Terminal.
- Check whether the Telnet client is installed by entering:
telnetIf Windows displays Telnet help or a Telnet prompt, the client is available. Start the animation with:
telnet towel.blinkenlights.nlThe animation may take a moment to begin. Do not assume that every Windows installation includes Telnet: Microsoft treats the Telnet Client as an optional Windows feature, and it may be disabled by default or restricted by an administrator.

optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Find Telnet Client, select it, and choose OK.
- Allow Windows to install the feature, then reopen Command Prompt or Windows Terminal.
- Run
telnet towel.blinkenlights.nlagain.
On a work, school, or managed computer, you may not have permission to add optional features. In that case, ask the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the device policy.
macOS and Linux
Open the Terminal application and run the same command:
telnet towel.blinkenlights.nlMany current macOS and Linux installations do not ship with a Telnet client enabled. If you see a “command not found” or similar message, install a Telnet client using your operating system’s normal package manager, then retry the command. Package names and installation permissions vary by distribution and macOS setup, so use the documentation for your specific system.

Terminal layout has a major effect on the picture. For the best result:
- Maximize the terminal window before connecting.
- Use a fixed-width, or monospace, font.
- Reduce the font size if lines wrap onto multiple rows.
- Widen the window if the right side of a frame is cut off.
- Keep the terminal at a stable size while the animation is playing.
If the artwork looks scrambled, the connection may still be working; the terminal may simply be too narrow or using an unsuitable font.

How to stop the Star Wars Telnet session
In many Telnet clients, press Ctrl+] to open the Telnet command prompt. Then enter:
quitThe exact escape key can vary between clients. If Ctrl+] does nothing, close the terminal tab or use the client’s own quit command. This is an interactive network session, so you do not normally need to force-kill a separate movie process.
Why the command may not work
The host towel.blinkenlights.nl is a long-running public service, but it is not guaranteed to be available every time you try it. A failure does not necessarily mean that you entered the command incorrectly.

Corporate, school, hotel, and some home networks block outbound TCP port 23, the traditional Telnet port. Microsoft’s Telnet syntax is telnet [host] [port]; when no port is supplied, the client uses TCP port 23. A blocked port cannot be fixed by changing the terminal’s font or command syntax.
Browser alternative when Telnet is unavailable
If the legacy Telnet service does not respond, use a current browser-based player that presents the same Episode IV ASCII animation. The browser version is useful because it can provide play, pause, speed adjustment, and frame scrubbing without requiring a local Telnet client.
