To watch a movie without Wi‑Fi, either use cellular data, download it in an official app before going offline, play a locally stored video file, or use a DVD or Blu-ray. If there is no internet connection at all, streaming will not work unless the movie was downloaded or stored on the device beforehand.
Downloading a movie without Wi‑Fi is not the same as watching one without Wi‑Fi: you normally need an internet connection first to download and authorize it.
First, identify what “without Wi‑Fi” means
- No Wi‑Fi, but cellular service: You can stream or download over mobile data, subject to your carrier’s limits and the app’s settings.
- No internet at all: Use an earlier download, a personal video file, a DVD or Blu-ray, or an offline entertainment system.
- No Wi‑Fi at home, but Ethernet is available: A computer, smart TV, streaming box, or game console may connect to the internet through an Ethernet cable.
- No internet on a TV: A download on your phone may not transfer to the TV. Streaming downloads are usually encrypted and restricted to playback inside the service’s app.
For a plane, road trip, camping trip, or unreliable-connection area, the most dependable approach is to download the movie while connected to reliable Wi‑Fi, verify it, and test playback with Airplane Mode enabled.
The easiest method: download the movie before leaving
- Connect your phone, tablet, or supported computer to reliable Wi‑Fi.
- Install or update the service’s official app.
- Sign in to the account with the eligible subscription or purchase.
- Open the movie’s details page and look for the Download icon.
- Choose a quality level, audio track, or subtitles if the app offers those choices.
- Wait until the download is completely finished.
- Open the app’s Downloads section and start the movie once while online.
- Turn off Wi‑Fi and cellular data, or enable Airplane Mode, and test playback.
If the Download icon is missing, the title, plan, device, region, or account may not support offline viewing. Do not assume that a subscription makes every title downloadable.

Streaming downloads are generally app-managed, encrypted licenses—not ordinary MP4 files. You usually cannot copy them freely to another device, move them to a USB drive, or open them in a different video player.
How popular streaming services handle offline movies
Netflix
Netflix downloads are made inside the Netflix app. Selected titles support downloads; if a movie has no Download icon, Netflix says it is not available for offline download. Availability can also vary by device, plan, title, and region. Some plans or devices may impose download limits.

Use the Prime Video app rather than a web browser. Amazon’s help documentation lists downloads through the Prime Video app on supported Fire tablets, iOS and Android devices, macOS, and Windows 10/11 devices.
- Open Prime Video and find the movie.
- Select Download.
- Choose the available quality.
- Open the app’s Downloads area to watch offline.
Exact device support and menu labels can change with the operating-system version. Check Amazon’s current download help page for your device.
Disney+
Disney’s current U.S. guidance says downloads are intended for supported phones and tablets, require an eligible plan, and are not available for offline viewing on TVs, computers, or Windows 10/11 tablets. Its U.S. help material says supported users can download on up to 10 mobile devices. Disney also says the device must reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active.
Disney’s current guidance also says ad-supported plans do not include downloads. Plans and availability can change, so confirm the rule for your account in the Disney+ Help Center. Downloaded titles are accessed through the app’s Downloads area.
Max
Max downloads are designed primarily for supported iPhone, iPad, and other mobile devices—not computers or TV devices. Select a movie, look for the Download icon, and review any expiration information shown in the app.

Max says unwatched downloads can expire after 30 days or sooner if the title leaves the service. Check its offline-download guidance because plan and regional rules may differ.
Hulu and YouTube Premium
Hulu downloads may be available through the Hulu app depending on the plan. Confirm current eligibility and device support in Hulu’s official app and help documentation before relying on it for travel.
YouTube Premium offline downloads apply to supported YouTube videos and are separate from downloading a purchased or rented movie. Availability, device limits, and reconnection requirements can vary by country and account. See Google’s YouTube Premium offline guidance.
Watch a purchased or rented movie offline
A digital purchase or rental can be a practical alternative when you want one specific movie rather than a continuing subscription. It is still tied to the service, account, app, and supported device; a purchase is not necessarily a transferable video file.
YouTube movie purchases and rentals
Google says purchased and rented movies can be downloaded in the YouTube app on supported iOS and Android devices. You do not need YouTube Premium to download a purchased or rented movie.
- Buy or rent the movie.
- Open the YouTube app on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
- Sign in with the Google Account used for the transaction.
- Tap your profile picture, then Your movies & TV.
- Select the movie and tap Download.
- Choose an available quality and audio track.
- Find the completed download under Profile picture → Downloads.
According to Google’s current documentation, purchased movies can be downloaded on up to five devices, while a rental can be downloaded on one device at a time. UHD is not available for download. Downloads remain inside the YouTube app.
Rentals have strict time limits. The checkout terms control; Google commonly describes a rental as having a period to begin watching and a shorter period after playback starts. Google TV and Google Play purchases
Google’s app transition means some devices refer to Google TV while older documentation refers to Google Play Movies & TV. On supported Android devices, use the relevant Google TV or Google Play app to download purchased or rented content for offline viewing. The exact path depends on the device and current app setup; consult Google’s Android download instructions.

Apple TV purchases
Apple provides download options for purchased movies and shows on supported Apple software and devices. Apple says Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, smart TVs, and other streaming devices cannot download movies and TV shows for offline use through the Apple TV app.
An iPhone, iPad, or other supported Apple device may therefore work as the offline player, while a smart TV or streaming box generally requires an internet connection. Check Apple’s current redownload and offline-content guidance for the exact device and operating-system requirements.
Watch a movie on a TV without internet
The most reliable offline TV setups use content that is genuinely stored locally:
- HDMI: Connect a laptop containing a local video file to the TV.
- USB: Insert a flash drive or external SSD if the TV supports the drive format and video file.
- Physical media: Use a DVD or Blu-ray player, compatible game console, or computer with an optical drive.
- Local network: Play a file from a NAS or home server if the TV and server are connected to the same local network. Internet access is not necessarily required.
Do not rely on casting from a phone to Chromecast without a functioning network. A downloaded Netflix, Disney+, Max, Prime Video, or other protected title may not support casting, AirPlay, screen mirroring, or HDMI output. DRM and HDCP behavior varies by service, operating system, adapter, and display.
For a no-internet TV setup, use an HDMI-connected computer with a local file or a physical disc as your primary plan. A phone-to-TV connection may work for some unprotected files, but it should not be your only backup for protected streaming downloads.
Use cellular data when Wi‑Fi is unavailable
If mobile service works, “without Wi‑Fi” does not necessarily mean “offline.” You can:
- Stream directly through a phone’s cellular connection.
- Download a movie over cellular before entering an area without service.
- Use a phone hotspot for a laptop or tablet.
- Connect a computer to a cellular modem or hotspot.
A feature-length HD movie can consume several gigabytes, depending on resolution, compression, and the service. Carrier data caps, throttling, roaming fees, and hotspot allowances may apply. Many apps default to Download over Wi‑Fi only. YouTube documents a setting for disabling that restriction on supported devices; the option may use a different label in other apps.

Cellular service may be fast enough for messages but too weak for dependable streaming. If you download over cellular, wait for completion and test the movie before leaving coverage.

Other offline options
Personal video files
Legitimate video files stored on a phone, tablet, laptop, USB drive, or external SSD can usually be played without Wi‑Fi using the device’s built-in player, VLC, or another compatible media player.
Compatibility depends on the container, codec, subtitles, audio track, and device. MP4 containing H.264 video and AAC audio is broadly compatible, but it is not guaranteed to work everywhere. Smart TVs may not read every file type or USB filesystem. Test the file locally, and carry the correct USB-C, Lightning, HDMI, or other adapter.
Do not use unauthorized movie downloads or third-party “streaming downloaders.” They may violate service terms, attempt DRM circumvention, create unusable files, or expose you to malware and scams.

Physical discs require no internet once you have the disc and a compatible player. Options include a home or portable DVD/Blu-ray player, a computer with the correct optical drive, or a compatible game console.
Discs take more space and require functioning hardware. Region coding, disc format, damaged media, and missing optical drives can prevent playback. They are less convenient than an app for searching subtitles or alternate audio, but they are among the most platform-independent offline choices.
Airline, hotel, or vehicle entertainment systems
Some aircraft, hotels, and vehicles provide their own offline or locally delivered entertainment systems. Availability, content, headphones, and controls vary. Treat these systems as a bonus rather than a replacement for a verified download.

- Download only the next few episodes rather than an entire season.
- Delete watched titles from the app’s Downloads area.
- Leave free storage for the operating system and other apps.
- Do not assume downloads can be moved to an SD card or external drive.

Why an offline download may stop working
There is no Download button
- Check whether the title is downloadable.
- Confirm that the plan includes downloads.
- Update the official app.
- Check that the device is supported.
- Confirm that the feature is available in your region.
- Use the app rather than a browser.
- Check whether you have reached a device or download limit.
Netflix specifically recommends checking title availability and its download troubleshooting information.
The download is stuck
- Confirm that the connection is stable.
- Check available storage.
- Cancel and restart the download.
- Update the app.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Restart the device.
- Delete the partial download and download the title again.

The movie will not play offline
- Open the app while online before departure.
- Confirm that the correct account is still signed in.
- Reconnect briefly to refresh authorization.
- Check whether the download or rental expired.
- Check whether the title left the service’s catalog.
- Disable a VPN or unusual network filter before the final test.
- Delete and redownload the title.
- Play it inside the official app rather than through casting or mirroring.
Offline downloads are temporary licenses in many services. A service may require periodic reauthorization, remove a title when its catalog rights end, or invalidate access after sign-out, account changes, app reinstallation, or a plan change.

For example, Disney says downloads require an internet reconnection at least every 30 days, while Max says unwatched downloads can expire after 30 days or when a title leaves Max. YouTube rental windows and YouTube Premium reconnection rules vary by title, account, and region.
Offline movie checklist
- Download the movie while connected to reliable Wi‑Fi.
- Wait for the download to finish.
- Confirm the desired subtitles and audio track.
- Open the app’s Downloads section.
- Start the movie once while online.
- Enable Airplane Mode and test playback.
- Skip forward several minutes to test the full file.
- Check the expiration or rental deadline.
- Keep the device charged.
- Pack a charger, power bank, headphones, and required cable or adapter.
- Carry a backup file, disc, or second downloaded title when the trip matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stream Netflix without Wi‑Fi?
Yes, if cellular data or another internet connection is available. With no internet at all, use a Netflix download that was completed and tested beforehand.
Can I watch a downloaded movie in Airplane Mode?
Often yes, but the service may impose expiration or reauthorization rules. Test the title in Airplane Mode before leaving.
Can I download a Netflix movie to a laptop?
