You can watch movies and TV shows for free legally through ad-supported streaming services, library-card platforms, official free catalogs, and an antenna for local broadcast television. The best choice depends on whether you want a specific movie on demand, live channels, documentaries, library access, or local news.
Free does not mean every title is always available. Catalogs change with licensing agreements, and availability can differ by country, device, library, and account eligibility. Start with the official service or app itself, rather than assuming that a search-engine result or unfamiliar streaming website is authorized.
What legally free viewing usually means
There are four legitimate ways to watch without paying a monthly streaming subscription:
- Ad-supported streaming: You watch on-demand movies, shows, or live channels with commercial interruptions.
- Library-supported streaming: A participating public library or university provides access through a card or institutional login.
- Official free catalogs: Some platforms make selected movies and television programs available at no charge, usually with advertising and regional restrictions.
- Over-the-air television: An antenna receives local broadcast channels without an ongoing service fee.
None of these options guarantees permanent access to a particular title. A movie may be free on one service this month, available to borrow through a library next month, and unavailable in your country after that. Best free streaming services for movies and TV shows
Tubi: free on-demand movies and shows
Tubi is one of the simplest places to begin if you want free movies and TV shows without a subscription. Tubi describes its catalog as free and legal, supported by advertising, and says that no subscription fee or credit card is required.
You can typically access Tubi through a web browser, mobile device, smart TV, game console, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and other supported platforms. The exact app and catalog can vary by market, so use the official Tubi app or website available in your location.
Choose Tubi when you want to browse an on-demand catalog rather than watch a scheduled channel. Expect commercial breaks, and do not assume that a title listed in another country will appear in your version of the service.
Pluto TV: free live channels plus on-demand viewing
Pluto TV is useful if you want free live channels alongside on-demand movies and television. Its channel-based side works more like traditional television: you select a channel and watch whatever is scheduled. Pluto also offers an on-demand section where you can choose from the titles currently listed there.

The Roku Channel: free movies, shows, and live channels in one place
The Roku Channel brings together free movies, television shows, live news, children’s entertainment, Roku Originals, and hundreds of live channels. It is a useful hub when you want both scheduled programming and a browsable free catalog.
A Roku hardware device is not always required. Depending on your market and device, The Roku Channel may be available through a Roku device, its website, or mobile applications. Check compatibility before buying hardware, because access options differ by country.
As with other free services, content availability can change. The service may also display paid or premium content alongside free programming, so look for the clearly identified free option before pressing play or starting a trial.

YouTube also offers selected free Primetime movies and television programs to eligible viewers. These titles are ad-supported and subject to market restrictions; the free catalog is not the same in every country.
Use YouTube’s official free-movie or free-TV sections and verify that the title is identified as free before watching. An ordinary search result is not proof that the uploader has permission to distribute a movie. A full-length film posted by an unknown account may be unauthorized even if it appears in YouTube search.

Use your library card for documentaries, classics, and independent films
For documentary viewers, a library card or university login can unlock better options than general-purpose free streaming services. Two services are especially worth checking.
Kanopy
Kanopy provides streaming through participating public libraries and universities. Its catalog is particularly relevant to documentaries, independent films, classic cinema, and educational content.
Kanopy is not universally free for every viewer. Your public library or university must participate, and that institution determines whether you are eligible. Begin by checking your library’s digital-services page or Kanopy’s institution lookup, then follow the sign-in process using your library card or school credentials.
Library participation does not necessarily mean unlimited viewing. Some institutions use monthly play credits or other access rules, and the catalog available through one library may differ substantially from another. If Kanopy does not recognize your card, contact the library rather than repeatedly attempting to create accounts with different locations.
hoopla
hoopla is a digital lending service that can provide free movie and TV borrowing through a participating library card. It also offers audiobooks, eBooks, comics, and music, depending on the library’s arrangement.
Because hoopla works through borrowing, you may encounter monthly borrow limits, title availability limits, loan periods, or other rules set by the service and your library. A title may be available through hoopla at one library but not another.

Watch local television free with an antenna
If your main goal is local news, broadcast networks, syndicated shows, certain sports, or scheduled television, an antenna may be the most direct way to eliminate a monthly television bill. It is not an on-demand movie catalog: you receive the channels that reach your home and watch their current schedules.
The FTC says televisions made since 2007 generally include a digital tuner and can receive free over-the-air channels with an inexpensive antenna. Reception still depends on your location, distance from transmitters, terrain, buildings, trees, antenna placement, and whether a station broadcasts on VHF or UHF frequencies.
Before buying equipment, check the FCC’s broadcast reception information for your location. A station shown as available in your area may still be unreliable indoors, especially in a basement, behind dense building materials, or on the far side of hills or tall buildings.

If you need local channels, compare an indoor TV antenna after checking your local reception conditions. Range numbers printed on antenna packaging are not guarantees; placement and the direction of nearby transmitters often matter more than a headline range claim.
How to set up antenna TV
- Check reception first. Use the FCC’s reception resources to identify nearby stations and whether they use VHF or UHF frequencies.
- Connect the antenna. Attach the coaxial cable to the television’s ANT IN, Antenna In, or CABLE/ANT input—not an HDMI port.
- Open the channel-scan menu. On many televisions this is under Settings > Channels, Broadcasting, or Channel Setup, followed by Auto Program, Auto Tuning, or Channel Scan. Labels differ by manufacturer.
- Choose antenna or air. If the television asks whether the source is cable or antenna, select Antenna, Air, or the equivalent option.
- Reposition and rescan. Place the antenna higher or near a window, then run another scan if important stations are missing or unstable. Small changes can make a meaningful difference.
Most modern televisions have the necessary digital tuner. If an older television lacks one, you may need an external digital TV tuner or converter between the antenna and the set. A tuner is also different from a streaming box: it receives broadcast signals, while a streaming device uses an internet connection.
Do you need a smart TV or streaming device?
No. A computer, phone, tablet, compatible game console, smart TV, or supported streaming platform may be enough for ad-supported services. You need an internet connection for streaming, and the service must support your device and region.
If your television does not have the relevant apps, an optional streaming stick or other streaming media player can make free services easier to access. The device itself is not the source of free content. You pay for the hardware, and you still need internet access; buying a streaming device does not make subscription services free.

For local broadcast channels, an antenna is the more direct solution. A streaming stick cannot receive over-the-air broadcasts unless it is paired with a compatible networked tuner or another supported setup.

How to find a specific movie or show legally
- Identify the type of access you need. Decide whether you want on-demand streaming, a live channel, a library loan, or an over-the-air broadcast.
- Search official services first. Check Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, official YouTube free offerings, Kanopy, and hoopla where applicable.
- Confirm the exact title. Look at the service’s own title page. Similar names, incomplete episodes, trailers, and unofficial uploads can appear in search results.
- Check your location and eligibility. A title or service may be available in one country, library system, or university but not another.
- Check whether it is free or paid. Some apps place free, rental, purchase, and premium-channel options together. Do not start a trial or enter payment information unless you intentionally want that offer.
- Accept that availability can change. Licensing agreements expire, libraries adjust their collections, and platforms rotate titles.
For documentaries, search by both the documentary’s title and its subject. If a film is not in a general free catalog, a participating library may still offer it through Kanopy or hoopla, while an official filmmaker, distributor, broadcaster, or museum channel may provide a legitimate free release on YouTube.

Prefer services that clearly identify their operator and distribution relationship, appear in official app stores, and explain how their free programming works. Tubi explicitly describes itself as legal, and the official information for Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Kanopy, hoopla, and YouTube identifies their free viewing or lending features.
Be cautious with an unfamiliar site that promises every new movie in high quality without registration or advertising. Warning signs include:
- multiple fake play buttons or sudden redirects;
- pop-ups claiming that your browser, video player, or computer needs an urgent update;
- requests to install a browser extension, codec, or standalone player before viewing;
- downloads that are unrelated to the movie file or app you intended to use;
- requests for card details for a supposedly free stream;
- poorly identified ownership, missing terms, or an unclear company behind the catalog.
Illegal streaming environments have been associated with deceptive advertising, malicious browser extensions, scams, and extensive tracking. Do not provide payment details or install software simply to access a title. A movie appearing on a website is not evidence that the website has permission to distribute it.
If you accidentally install something suspicious, close the page, remove any newly added browser extension or application, run your operating system’s built-in security scan, and change passwords if you entered them into the site. Keep the browser, television platform, and operating system updated through their normal settings rather than through a pop-up advertisement.

Troubleshooting free streaming and antenna reception
The video buffers or keeps stopping
- Test another video or service to determine whether the problem affects one title or the whole connection.
- Restart the router and the viewing device.
- Close other high-bandwidth activity and try the service’s lower-quality playback option if available.
- Use the official app or a current supported browser.
- Try a wired connection or move closer to the Wi-Fi access point when possible.
If only one service fails, check whether it is experiencing an outage or whether your device is supported in your region. Avoid downloading a random “streaming fixer” or browser extension from a pop-up. Persistent Windows playback problems should first be investigated through browser updates, network troubleshooting, app reinstalling, and the computer manufacturer’s official driver and support tools.
The app is missing from the television
Check the television’s official app store, confirm that the TV model and country are supported, and install the service’s app from its verified publisher. If the platform is too old to support the app, use a computer, phone, game console, or compatible streaming media player instead.
The antenna found no channels
- Confirm that the cable is connected to the antenna input and that the TV source is set to antenna or air rather than cable.
- Run the channel scan again after moving the antenna higher or nearer a window.
- Check local transmitter information and whether nearby stations use VHF or UHF.
- Try a different room or an outdoor installation if indoor reception remains weak.
- Confirm that an older television has a digital tuner or add an appropriate external tuner.
A channel scan cannot create stations that do not reach your location. A larger antenna is not automatically better, and advertised range figures should not be treated as guaranteed reception.
