Louis Theroux: The Settlers (2025) is available free in the US through Kanopy if your public library or university participates. In the UK, it originally streamed free on BBC iPlayer, but its current catalogue status should be checked before you rely on that option.
If you do not have Kanopy access in the US, the main legal alternatives are paid services: BBC Select—available through supported channel platforms including Amazon Prime Video Channels—and BritBox. BBC Select has also advertised a seven-day trial, but that is a temporary promotional route, not a permanently free stream.
Where to watch Louis Theroux: The Settlers free in the US
1. Kanopy: free if your library or university provides access
For US viewers, Kanopy is the clearest legal free option identified for Louis Theroux: The Settlers. Kanopy normally requires an account connected to a participating public library or university. You may need a library card, university login, or both, depending on the institution’s rules.

Access is not universal: having a library card does not automatically mean your library carries Kanopy, and participating libraries can limit the number of monthly viewing tickets or available titles. Search for the documentary inside Kanopy after signing in rather than assuming it will appear for every account.
To check:
- Open Kanopy’s website or app.
- Choose the option to find or add your library or university.
- Sign in with the credentials requested by your institution.
- Search for Louis Theroux: The Settlers and confirm that the 2025 documentary is playable.
This is the best route to try first if your priority is watching legally without starting a paid streaming subscription. It is free at the point of viewing for eligible users, but it is not an open, no-registration service for every US resident.
2. BBC Select: subscription or trial access
BBC Select lists Louis Theroux: The Settlers among its available titles in the United States. BBC Select is distributed through platforms including Amazon Prime Video Channels, the Apple TV app, and The Roku Channel. The programme’s US launch date was May 29, 2025.
If you already use Amazon’s channel subscriptions, you can watch on BBC Select through Amazon Prime Video Channels if the title is shown as available in your account. BBC Select has promoted a seven-day free trial, where offered, but check the price and renewal date before starting: a trial becomes a paid subscription if it is not cancelled under the provider’s terms.

3. BritBox
US availability listings also identify BritBox as a subscription option for the documentary. Availability can vary by platform and date, so search for the exact title in the BritBox app or website before subscribing. A BritBox subscription is not the same thing as a free stream, and a general BritBox catalogue listing should not be treated as a guarantee that every account can play this particular programme.
Where to watch it free in the UK
BBC iPlayer was the original free UK option
Louis Theroux: The Settlers premiered on BBC television in the UK in April 2025 and was made available on BBC iPlayer at launch. BBC iPlayer access normally involves the service’s standard UK requirements, including a valid UK TV Licence.
That launch information does not prove that the documentary is still on iPlayer now. The programme was reported as available for a limited period, and BBC iPlayer’s catalogue changes. The safest current advice is to search BBC iPlayer for Louis Theroux: The Settlers and check whether a playable episode page is available before assuming it remains free.
If it is listed, follow BBC iPlayer’s current sign-in and viewing prompts. If it is not listed, do not use a result for The Settlers (2023) as a substitute: that is a different film.

What is the documentary about?
Directed by Joshua Baker, Louis Theroux: The Settlers runs for approximately 62 minutes. Theroux travels through the occupied West Bank, meeting religious-nationalist Israeli settlers and examining the consequences of settlement activity in the aftermath of the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attack.
The subject matter is politically and emotionally contentious. Viewers should expect a current-affairs documentary focused on people, ideology, territory, and the human consequences of the conflict—not a fictional drama or the similarly titled historical western.
Do not confuse these similarly titled films
| Title | Year | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Louis Theroux: The Settlers | 2025 | BBC documentary about Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank; approximately 62 minutes. |
| The Settlers / Los colonos | 2023 | Chilean historical western about José Menéndez’s three horsemen in early-20th-century Patagonia; 101 minutes. |
| The Settlers | 2016 | A separate documentary with its own availability listings. |
| Settlers | 2021 | A separate science-fiction film. |
Searching only for “The Settlers” can therefore produce the wrong film, the wrong runtime, or the wrong streaming provider. Include Louis Theroux and 2025 in your search.

| Country | Free option | Paid or trial alternatives | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Kanopy, if an eligible library or university provides the title | BBC Select; BritBox | Kanopy access is institution-dependent. BBC Select’s trial is temporary, not permanently free. |
| United Kingdom | BBC iPlayer originally carried it at launch | Check current official listings | Current iPlayer availability was not confirmed; catalogue windows change and a TV Licence is normally required. |
Can you watch it from another country with a VPN?
Travel access is not a guaranteed workaround. A VPN can conflict with a broadcaster’s terms, territorial licensing rules, or the service’s requirements for a UK TV Licence. Use officially supported access in the country where you are located, and check the relevant provider’s current terms rather than treating a VPN as an assured solution.

Is there a free, ad-supported US stream?
No universally free, ad-supported US stream open to everyone was verified for the 2025 documentary. Kanopy is the strongest free route, but only for users whose library or university participates and has access. BBC Select, BritBox, and other channel options should be treated as subscription services unless a clearly stated trial applies.
Availability changes—check before subscribing
Streaming rights can change by country and platform. Before paying, confirm all three details on the provider’s current page:
- the full title is Louis Theroux: The Settlers;
- the runtime or description matches the 2025 BBC documentary; and
- the programme is playable with your specific account and location.
Updated August 12, 2026: Kanopy remains the identified free US route for eligible users; BBC Select and BritBox are subscription alternatives. The documentary’s original BBC iPlayer availability in the UK is documented, but current iPlayer catalogue status should be checked directly.

Is BBC Select free?
BBC Select and BritBox are subscription options. BBC Select may offer a seven-day trial, but the trial is temporary and can become paid access if not cancelled under the provider’s terms.

No. The 2023 film, also called Los colonos, is a Chilean historical western. Louis Theroux’s 2025 programme is a BBC documentary about settlers in the occupied West Bank.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: US viewers should try Kanopy first, provided their library or university participates. Otherwise, check BBC Select or BritBox, with BBC Select’s possible seven-day trial treated as temporary paid-service access. UK viewers should search BBC iPlayer, where the documentary originally streamed free, but should not assume it is still available. Always search the full title—Louis Theroux: The Settlers (2025)—to avoid the unrelated films.
