If you are travelling, ITV’s supported option is to download eligible programmes in the ITVX app on an iPhone, iPad or Android device before you leave. ITV says those downloads can be watched abroad for up to seven days, subject to licensing restrictions. A VPN is not an official alternative: ITV says it blocks detected VPNs and prohibits attempts to bypass its location controls.
Can you watch ITVX abroad?
No—not by streaming. ITV says its live and on-demand service is available only in the UK because of broadcast and content-licensing restrictions. This applies whether you use the free service or pay for ITVX Premium. ITV’s overseas guidance explains the restriction.
The exception is offline playback: ITVX Premium subscribers can watch eligible programmes downloaded in the UK to the supported mobile app before departure. A download is not a way to access the live channels or stream a programme that was not saved in advance.
Download programmes before you leave the UK
ITV describes downloads as an option for Premium subscribers using the ITVX app on iOS and Android mobile devices. Availability depends on the title’s licence; not every programme can be downloaded. ITV says downloads can be watched abroad for up to seven days. See ITV’s Premium-abroad guidance for its current conditions.

If you are already abroad and did not download a programme, ITV’s normal streaming service is unavailable there; downloading after departure may not work. A programme can also be unavailable offline because of licensing, an expired download period, an incomplete or removed file, or a subscription/account mismatch.
What ITVX Premium includes—and what it does not
ITVX Premium is a UK subscription that adds ad-free on-demand viewing, additional films and programmes, the BritBox catalogue within ITVX, and downloads on supported mobile devices. It is offered with monthly and annual billing. It does not provide worldwide streaming rights: live TV remains unavailable abroad, and only eligible pre-downloaded content is covered by ITV’s travel guidance. ITV’s Premium page lists the features and current subscription details.

As listed by ITV on August 18, 2026, Premium costs £5.99 per month or £59.99 per year; ITV presents the annual option as equivalent to two months free versus twelve monthly payments. Prices can change, and app-store billing, taxes or promotions may differ. ITV also announced Premium as a UK Prime Video add-on at £5.99 per month in October 2025; that distribution option does not make ITVX available worldwide. ITV’s announcement.
Can a VPN watch ITVX abroad?
A VPN can route a connection through a server that appears to be in the UK, and some VPN providers market or report occasional ITVX access. That does not make it reliable or ITV-approved. ITV says it uses geo-blocking, may block playback when it detects a VPN or proxy, and requires users not to attempt to circumvent those controls. Read ITV’s Terms of Use.

- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
Unofficial workaround: Some VPN connections may sometimes reach ITVX through a UK server, but ITV can detect and block them. Access may stop working without warning, and attempting to bypass geo-blocking conflicts with ITV’s stated terms. Do not treat a VPN as a guaranteed ITVX travel pass; check the service’s current terms and the laws that apply where you are.
A VPN is a separate privacy product, not an ITVX subscription. It does not automatically provide an ITVX account, Premium membership or a UK payment method. Smart TVs and streaming devices can add setup complications, and VPN speeds and server availability vary. If you want a VPN for general privacy or network security, assess it on those merits rather than buying on the assumption it will unlock ITVX.

ITVX says you are abroad while you are in the UK
ITVX uses network and IP-location signals to determine where a connection is coming from. A VPN, proxy or Smart DNS service can make a UK viewer appear overseas; an ISP may also route traffic through foreign servers or have an IP address incorrectly registered outside the UK. ITV explains these causes in its location troubleshooting guidance.
- Turn off any VPN, proxy or Smart DNS service.
- Close and reopen the ITVX app or browser.
- Try another connection, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi.
- Check the apparent location of your IP address. If it is wrongly geolocated, ask your internet provider to investigate.
- If the problem continues, contact ITVX support.
ITV-101 errors indicate that on-demand or live streaming is unavailable, including when ITVX believes you are outside the UK or detects a VPN. ITV-101 help. ITV-102 errors can indicate VPN detection; ITV suggests trying mobile data, another device or browser, and disabling an active VPN. ITV-102 help.

Can you watch ITVX on a TV abroad?
ITV’s official travel option is downloads in the iOS or Android mobile app. Do not assume that a download can be transferred to or played through a smart TV, Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, Fire TV, games console or another TV app. ITV provides separate guidance for its supported devices, but device support for UK streaming is not the same as support for overseas offline downloads.
Choose the option that fits your trip
| Option | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Download before departure | Travellers who can plan ahead and want specific shows for a trip | Requires Premium; mobile app only; title eligibility varies; ITV says the viewing window is up to seven days; no live TV. |
| Wait until you return to the UK | Viewers who do not want Premium or an unofficial workaround | No ITVX access during the trip, and programmes may leave the catalogue. |
| Find a local legal service | Viewers already abroad who want a particular programme | Availability depends on the title, country and date. Check the programme’s official distributor, a local broadcaster or streaming service, BritBox in your country, or a legitimate purchase or rental service. |
| Use a VPN | People seeking a VPN for privacy or security who understand the separate streaming risks | Not supported by ITV for bypassing its restrictions; detected VPNs may be blocked, and use conflicts with ITV’s stated anti-circumvention terms. |
For BritBox, check the catalogue and access terms in the country where you are staying. The BritBox catalogue included within ITVX Premium does not establish that ITVX itself streams internationally, and availability of a particular title can vary.
