1. Open Plex or install the Plex app

For documentary viewers, the documentary category is the natural starting point, but documentary titles can also appear in broader collections or on genre-specific channels. 4. Choose a title or channel and press Play
Select an on-demand movie or show, or choose a Live TV channel. Plex will display the available viewing option and begin playback when you select it. Free content is funded by advertising, so you should expect commercials before or during a program.
Ad frequency and placement can vary by program, device, and region. A stable internet connection is required for streaming, and the picture quality available to you can depend on the title, device, connection, and Plex’s delivery system.
Is Plex really free?
Plex’s free Movies & Shows and Live TV services are free to watch, but they are ad-supported. You do not pay a subscription fee for that portion of Plex’s service, but you will see advertising during playback.
The Plex app may also show options for rentals, premium features, or personal-media services. Those are separate from the free catalog. In the United States and Canada, Plex can list newer or popular movies available to rent; a rental is not the same as a free title, even if both appear in the same general Plex interface.

Does Plex Pass remove the advertisements?
No. Plex Pass does not remove the advertisements from Plex’s own free Movies & Shows or Live TV content, and it does not unlock an expanded version of that catalog.
Plex Pass is mainly aimed at people who run a personal Plex Media Server and want premium server-related capabilities. Depending on the setup, those features can include:

Not from Plex’s free Movies & Shows or Live TV services. Plex’s download functionality applies to personal media stored on a Plex Media Server, subject to the relevant account, app, and feature requirements. It is not an offline-download workaround for Plex’s ad-supported catalog.
If you need offline viewing, check the download rules of the specific service that provides the content. Do not assume that a title appearing in Plex’s free catalog can be saved for a flight or a trip without an internet connection.

Watching Plex on a TV without a built-in app
If your television does not support Plex directly, you can use a supported streaming player connected through HDMI. Plex lists Amazon Fire TV among its supported platforms. A Fire TV streaming stick can be useful when you want a simple way to open Plex on an older or otherwise unsupported television.

Buying note: Fire TV hardware is optional
The Amazon Fire TV Stick HD is a relevant basic choice for watching Plex on a compatible television, while the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus is a current variant for households with a compatible 4K setup. Plex’s free service does not require either model, 4K hardware is not necessary to access the catalog, and buying a streaming stick does not remove advertisements or add titles. Confirm the current model, price, regional availability, HDMI requirements, and Plex app support before purchasing.

A Plex Media Server is useful if you want to organize your own legally obtained video library and stream it to your devices. It is not necessary for watching Plex’s free catalog. Conversely, Plex’s free service is not a place to upload or stream pirated copies. Personal libraries should contain content you own or are legally permitted to use.
Why can’t you find a particular movie or show?
There are several ordinary explanations:
- The title is not currently licensed. Plex’s catalog changes as titles become available for limited periods or partners add and remove content.
- The title is unavailable in your country. Distributor licensing can restrict individual movies, shows, or channels by territory.
- You found a rental listing. In the United States and Canada, some movies shown in Plex may require a separate rental payment.
- You are looking in the wrong section. A program may be listed under Movies & Shows, Live TV, a genre collection, or an external service rather than as a free on-demand title.
- Your device has different app capabilities. Older smart-TV models and some app versions may not expose every feature in the same way as the web app.
Plex says free ad-supported content is available in almost every country, but that does not mean every title or channel is available worldwide. The most reliable way to check is to search Plex from your location and inspect whether the specific item is marked as free, live, or available to rent.

- Test another title. If one program fails while others play, the problem may be title- or service-specific.
- Restart playback and the app. Close Plex completely, reopen it, and try again.
- Check the connection. Test another streaming service or website, and move closer to the router or use a wired connection where practical.
- Update Plex and the device. Install available app, browser, television, or streaming-player updates.
- Try the web app or another supported device. This helps identify whether the issue is limited to one app or television.
- Check for service or regional limitations. A title may be temporarily unavailable, restricted in your location, or affected by an ad-delivery problem.
If a Windows computer is generally slow—not merely buffering in Plex—look at ordinary causes such as excessive background processes, low available storage, browser extensions, malware protection conflicts, or an aging system. A general Windows PC performance tool may be relevant only after basic browser, network, device, and Plex checks; it is not required for Plex and is not a guaranteed fix for streaming problems.
