For a first viewing, watch Fargo (1996), then the television anthology in release order: Year One, Year Two, Year Three, Year Four, and Year Five. That sequence introduces the franchise’s tone and shared world naturally, while preserving the impact of callbacks and connections that later installments expect viewers to recognize.

If you are rewatching and want the fictional timeline instead, use Year Four → Year Two → Fargo (1996) → Year One → Year Three → Year Five. The television series is an anthology, not one uninterrupted story, so either order is workable—but they offer different experiences.

The best Fargo watch order for most viewers

  1. Fargo (1996) — the original feature film
  2. Fargo: Year One — 2014, 10 episodes
  3. Fargo: Year Two — 2015, 10 episodes
  4. Fargo: Year Three — 2017, 10 episodes
  5. Fargo: Year Four — 2020, 11 episodes
  6. Fargo: Year Five — premiered in 2023 and concluded in 2024, 10 episodes

This is the recommended order if you have never seen Fargo. The 1996 movie establishes the mixture of crime, bleak comedy, regional detail, violence, and moral decency that the FX anthology later develops. The show then expands the idea into five largely self-contained stories.

FX uses “Year” and “installment” branding for the television series, although viewers and some listings may also call them Seasons 1 through 5. The film is separate from the five television installments. Together, the show’s five installments contain 51 episodes: 10 each in Years One, Two, Three, and Five, and 11 in Year Four.

Fargo in chronological story order

For the principal period in which each story takes place, the order is:

  1. Fargo: Year Four — Kansas City, around 1950–51
  2. Fargo: Year Two — Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota in 1979
  3. Fargo (1996) — principally Minnesota and North Dakota in 1987
  4. Fargo: Year One — Minnesota in 2006–07
  5. Fargo: Year Three — Minnesota in 2010, with events extending into 2011
  6. Fargo: Year Five — Minnesota and North Dakota in 2019

This is an editorial chronology based on each installment’s main setting. It is not a claim that every scene falls neatly inside one calendar year: framing sequences, flashbacks, and epilogues can broaden an installment’s exact time span.

Release order vs. chronological order

Order Sequence Best for
Release order 1996 film → Year One → Year Two → Year Three → Year Four → Year Five First-time viewers and anyone who wants references to unfold as audiences originally encountered them
Chronological order Year Four → Year Two → 1996 film → Year One → Year Three → Year Five Rewatchers interested in the fictional history of crime families, institutions, and recurring legacies

Why release order is usually better

The film is the franchise’s foundation. Joel and Ethan Coen’s 1996 movie follows a failed kidnapping scheme, the violence that grows from it, and police chief Marge Gunderson’s investigation. It establishes Fargo’s visual language, deadpan humor, moral contrast, and fictional “true story” presentation before the television series broadens the concept.

The show was developed from the film but is not a conventional continuation of Marge’s case. Noah Hawley’s series is an anthology: each installment has a new central cast and a new criminal problem. However, the stories belong to a common fictional world. Names, families, locations, objects, historical echoes, and small continuity links recur across the years.

Watching chronologically can make the history feel more linear than it really is and can reveal connections before they were designed to be noticed. Release order lets the anthology’s world-building accumulate gradually. Year Two, for example, works as a prequel to elements introduced in Year One; that relationship is more meaningful when Year One comes first.

Is the movie required?

No. Every television installment is substantially self-contained, and you can begin with Year One or another season without being lost. But the film remains the clearest introduction to the property. Starting with it also prevents the series from feeling like an ordinary serialized crime drama when its structure is deliberately different.

What happens in each Fargo installment?

1. Fargo (1996)

The original film is a feature-length crime story set principally in Minnesota and North Dakota in 1987. A financially desperate car salesman’s kidnapping plan spirals into murder, while Marge Gunderson methodically investigates the consequences. Its central contrast—ordinary decency facing absurd, self-inflicted violence—becomes one of the anthology’s defining ideas.

Although the film and series share a name and fictional universe, the television show does not continue this exact investigation. Treat the movie as the starting point of the screen universe, not as episode zero of one long plot.

2. Fargo: Year One

Year One is set primarily in Bemidji, Minnesota, during 2006–07. The story centers on insurance salesman Lester Nygaard, dangerous drifter and hitman Lorne Malvo, and deputy Molly Solverson.

It is a complete case in its own right, but it also establishes the anthology’s method: a local crime story gradually opens into a larger network of violence, corruption, coincidence, and moral choice. It contains links to the film without requiring prior knowledge of every detail.

3. Fargo: Year Two

Year Two moves back to 1979. A younger Lou Solverson becomes involved in a violent conflict between the Gerhardt crime family and the Kansas City mafia, with events spreading across Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Because Lou and aspects of his history are introduced in Year One, this season has an especially clear prequel relationship when watched in release order. In chronological order, it is the second screen story, but some of its emotional and continuity value comes from knowing what the later characters say about this period.

4. Fargo: Year Three

Year Three takes place principally in Minnesota in 2010, with the story extending into 2011. It follows brothers Emmit and Ray Stussy as personal resentment develops into murder and a wider criminal conspiracy.

This installment is less about tracing one family’s complete history than about the series’ recurring questions: how people rewrite their own past, how apparently respectable lives conceal exploitation, and how randomness can place ordinary people beside organized violence.

5. Fargo: Year Four

Year Four is the earliest major story chronologically, set in Kansas City around 1950 and early 1951. It depicts conflict between competing criminal organizations and expands the anthology’s treatment of race, immigration, assimilation, and organized crime.

Its earlier setting makes it the natural starting point for a timeline-first rewatch, but not necessarily the best introduction. It assumes that Fargo can be a broader historical crime anthology rather than a direct sequel to the 1996 film.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Fargo: Year Five

Year Five returns to Minnesota and North Dakota in 2019. Its central figure is Dorothy “Dot” Lyon, whose apparently ordinary life is disrupted when an incident exposes a dangerous past.

As the latest installment in the fictional timeline, it is the natural endpoint of a chronological viewing. It also works well as the endpoint of a release-order viewing because it draws together many of the anthology’s established concerns—identity, family, violence, power, and the gap between public respectability and private history—without requiring the earlier stories to function as one continuous plot.

A spoiler-light plan for first-time viewers

  1. Watch the 1996 film first. It is short enough to provide the franchise’s foundation without committing you to a long series.
  2. Continue with Year One. This is the clearest bridge from the movie’s style into the anthology format.
  3. Watch Years Two and Three in release order. Their connections and echoes are more rewarding when encountered this way.
  4. Finish with Years Four and Five. Year Four looks furthest back historically, while Year Five is the latest story and the current endpoint of the television anthology.

You do not need to pause between installments or search for a viewing guide to explain every reference. The major plots are designed to work on their own. If a name, object, or location feels familiar, it is usually better to let the connection emerge through the story rather than spoil it in advance.

Where to watch Fargo

The 1996 movie and the FX television anthology should be treated as separate availability questions. FX’s current show information directs U.S. viewers to watch Fargo on Hulu for the television installments. Availability can change by country, date, subscription tier, and licensing arrangement, so verify the listing before beginning a marathon. Do not assume that the film is included with the television series.

Digital purchase listings and physical DVD or Blu-ray editions may provide alternatives for viewers who want offline access, but specific stores, prices, editions, and inventory are volatile. A complete official movie-plus-five-installment box set should not be assumed to exist without checking the exact product listing.

For fans who want more

Readers interested in how the television anthology was made may want Noah Hawley’s Fargo: This Is a True Story. It is a 448-page making-of and collector-oriented companion from Grand Central Publishing—not a sixth installment, novelization, or continuation of the plot. It is the most directly relevant physical companion for viewers who want production background and behind-the-scenes material.

Common watch-order mistakes

  • Treating the show as one continuous story: the installments share a world, but each has its own principal cast and case.
  • Assuming chronological order is automatically superior: Year Four is earliest in the timeline, but release order better preserves the way the anthology’s connections were introduced.
  • Counting the film as a television season: the movie is a separate 1996 feature; the FX program has five installments and 51 episodes.
  • Calling the stories verified true crimes: Fargo uses a fictional “true story” framing device. It should not be treated as proof that every event actually happened.
  • Expecting one streaming subscription to include everything everywhere: the movie and series may have different rights, and availability varies by territory and date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I watch the Fargo movie before the TV series?

Yes, for the best first-watch experience. The series is self-contained enough to start on its own, but the 1996 film establishes the tone, moral framework, and shared-world concept that the anthology develops.

What is the chronological order of Fargo?

Year Four, Year Two, the 1996 film, Year One, Year Three, and Year Five. This is based on each installment’s principal story setting, not on every flashback or framing scene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the Fargo seasons connected?

Yes, but they are anthology stories rather than chapters in one uninterrupted plot. They share a fictional world and include recurring names, families, places, objects, and thematic references.

How many episodes are in the Fargo TV series?

The five FX installments total 51 episodes. Years One, Two, Three, and Five have 10 episodes each; Year Four has 11.

Is Fargo based on a true story?

The franchise uses a fictional true-story presentation. The disclaimer is part of its style and should not be read as verification that the depicted crimes all happened.

The Bottom Line

First time watching: choose release order—Fargo (1996), Year One, Year Two, Year Three, Year Four, then Year Five. Rewatching for the fictional timeline: choose Year Four, Year Two, the film, Year One, Year Three, and Year Five.
