After the original two films, the series splits into separate continuities, then resets twice more. The easiest way to watch every movie is release order; the best way to follow a single version of Michael Myers depends on which timeline you choose.

The best order for a first-time viewer
For most viewers, watch the films in release order. That means beginning with John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978), continuing through Halloween II, and then watching the remaining entries in the order above.
This approach makes the franchise’s changing ideas visible: Season of the Witch tries an anthology direction, Halloween 4 brings Michael back, H20 creates a new continuation, Rob Zombie remakes the premise, and the 2018 trilogy resets the story again.

The main Halloween timelines
1. The original Michael Myers/Jamie Lloyd timeline
- Halloween (1978)
- Halloween II (1981)
- Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
- Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)
- Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)
This is the longest original continuity. Halloween III is not part of it because Michael Myers does not appear. The story moves from Laurie Strode to Jamie Lloyd, Laurie’s daughter, after the character is said to have died before the events of the fourth film.
The Curse of Michael Myers exists in two important versions: the theatrical cut and the Producer’s Cut. They share the same basic place in the timeline but differ in scenes, explanations, pacing, and parts of the ending. If you encounter both, watch the theatrical version first for the version audiences originally saw, then treat the Producer’s Cut as an alternate cut rather than a separate movie.
2. The Laurie Strode H20 timeline
- Halloween (1978)
- Halloween II (1981)
- Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
- Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
H20 ignores the Jamie Lloyd films and follows Laurie as an older woman living under an assumed identity. It treats the original film and its 1981 sequel as its history. Resurrection then continues this version of Laurie’s story, moving the action into a reality-television setting.

- Halloween 3-Movie Collection (Blu-ray + Digital)
3. Rob Zombie’s remake continuity
- Halloween (2007)
- Halloween II (2009)
Rob Zombie’s two films are a self-contained reimagining, not sequels to the 1978 film. The 2007 movie retells Michael’s childhood and massacre in Haddonfield, while the 2009 film follows the psychological and supernatural consequences. They should be watched together, in that order.

4. The Blumhouse/2018 continuity
- Halloween (1978)
- Halloween (2018)
- Halloween Kills (2021)
- Halloween Ends (2022)
The 2018 film is a direct sequel to the 1978 original. It disregards the earlier sequels, including the revelation in Halloween II that Laurie and Michael are siblings. In this timeline, their 40-year separation and the aftermath of the 1978 murders are central to the story.
Halloween Kills begins immediately after the 2018 movie and covers the rest of that night. Halloween Ends takes place four years later and shifts attention toward the effect of Michael’s violence on Haddonfield as well as toward Laurie and Michael’s final conflict.

Where does Halloween III: Season of the Witch fit?
It does not fit into Michael Myers’ timeline. Season of the Witch is an anthology-style entry about Silver Shamrock masks, a sinister commercial campaign, and the attempt to revive the idea that Halloween films could tell different stories each year.
Watch it third if you are following release order. If you only want Michael Myers movies, you can skip it without losing any plot information from the other films.
Should you watch the movies chronologically?
There is no useful single chronological order because the films contradict one another. A timeline-based marathon is better organized as separate branches:
Rank #4
- Original branch: 1978, 1981, 1988, 1989, 1995.
- H20 branch: 1978, 1981, 1998, 2002.
- Rob Zombie branch: 2007, 2009.
- 2018 branch: 1978, 2018, 2021, 2022.
Do not place the 2007 remake before the 1978 original as though it were a prequel. It retells the premise. Likewise, do not watch Halloween Kills directly after Halloween II; it belongs to the later continuity created by the 2018 film.
A practical viewing plan
- Start with Halloween (1978). It establishes Michael Myers, Laurie Strode, Dr. Loomis, and the basic shape of the series.
- Watch Halloween II (1981). It is the closest direct continuation of the original film.
- Choose whether to continue by release date or branch. Release order gives the full franchise history; timeline order is better if you want one coherent story at a time.
- Keep Season of the Witch as an anthology detour. It is part of the franchise, but not part of Michael’s story.
- Finish with Halloween Ends only after Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills. The final film assumes the events and character relationships established in those two movies.
FAQ
How many Halloween movies are there?
There are 13 released feature films in the franchise through Halloween Ends (2022). That count includes Halloween III: Season of the Witch and both of Rob Zombie’s remake films.
What is the correct order to watch all 13 Halloween movies?
Use release order: Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween III (1982), Halloween 4 (1988), Halloween 5 (1989), The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), H20 (1998), Resurrection (2002), Halloween (2007), Halloween II (2009), Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021), and Halloween Ends (2022).
Can I skip Halloween III: Season of the Witch?
Yes, if you only want the Michael Myers storyline. It is a standalone anthology entry with different characters and no Michael Myers, but it remains part of the 13-film franchise and is worth watching if you want the complete series.
Which Halloween movies are connected to each other?
The original branch runs from 1978 through Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. The H20 branch uses the 1978 and 1981 films before continuing with H20 and Resurrection. The 2007 and 2009 films form Rob Zombie’s remake continuity. The newest branch is 1978, 2018, Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends.
The Bottom Line
For all 13 films, watch them in release order. For the clearest individual stories, choose one of four branches: the original five-film run, the H20 continuation, Rob Zombie’s two-film remake, or the 2018–2022 trilogy. Halloween III: Season of the Witch is a standalone anthology film and does not belong in Michael Myers’ timeline.
