Verify a large video at three separate stages: inspect and play or decode the local file, confirm YouTube has finished processing the upload and that it plays, then run a representative OBS test stream and check YouTube’s stream health. Each stage tests a different part of the path; a completed upload or readable file header alone does not prove the video will work in a live stream.
What each verification step proves

1. Preserve a comparison point before uploading
If you still have the source, record its file size and, where practical, a cryptographic checksum before upload. Compare a downloaded or staged copy against that trusted value only when your workflow gives you both files to compare. A matching checksum confirms byte-for-byte identity between those two files; it does not prove that the source was a valid, complete video in the first place.
Do not call an upload checksum-verified unless the platform or workflow actually exposes a comparable checksum. A file size match is useful as a quick check, but it is not proof that the contents match.
2. Inspect and verify the local video
Probe the container and streams
FFprobe, included with FFmpeg builds, can report container and stream information and surface probe errors. A basic inspection command is:

ffprobe -hide_banner -show_format -show_streams input.mp4
Replace input.mp4 with the actual path to your file. Check that the output shows the expected video and audio streams, a plausible duration, and the container you expect. Exact output and behavior depend on the installed FFmpeg build and the file.
A successful probe is not a full content review: metadata can look plausible even when a section of the video is damaged, silent, out of sync, or missing.

Play or decode the content
For a video that matters to a live event, play it from beginning to end or run a complete decode pass. Confirm that the picture and sound are present, the audio is audible, duration is as expected, synchronization holds, and the ending is intact. If time makes a full review impossible, inspect the beginning, middle, and end—but treat that as sampling, not exhaustive verification.

After uploading, wait for YouTube processing to complete, then open the uploaded video and test playback at the quality needed for the stream. YouTube’s Data API documents processingDetails as processing-progress information and describes processingProgress as designed to be polled. That provides a processing-status mechanism; it does not establish a particular current Studio screen sequence or guarantee that every rendition is immediately available.

If the video does not play, or the quality you need is unavailable, wait and check again before treating it as ready. Confirm playback itself rather than relying only on an upload-complete indication.
4. Test the actual OBS-to-YouTube stream path
Prepare a representative test
Before the event, conduct a private or otherwise appropriately restricted live test. Use a section with motion and audio similar to the planned program. YouTube Help’s official instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its encoder guidance also recommends checking upload bitrate with a speed test, testing with similar audio and movement, and monitoring stream health and messages. Check the picture, sound, and health messages
In OBS, confirm the intended video is visible in the scene and that the correct audio source is active. On YouTube’s preview or test viewer, verify that the picture moves, sound is audible, and audio remains in sync. While the test runs, watch for dropped frames, warnings, or other stream-health messages and address them before the event. A recording preview in OBS does not test the live encoder-to-platform path.

YouTube’s upload recommendations include MP4 with H.264 video, progressive scan, AAC-LC or Opus audio, and the MP4 moov atom at the front (“Fast Start”). These are recommendations, not proof that every other valid combination will fail. Upload encoding recommendations are separate from live encoder bitrate recommendations; do not apply upload bitrate figures as OBS live settings.

OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide, dated 2023-03-26, describes MKV as a flexible default recording container that can be remuxed, and fragmented MP4/MOV as potentially suitable for uploads to services such as YouTube. Container compatibility depends on the actual codecs and intended workflow. If an OBS-produced file fails to upload or play, inspect its streams and consult the relevant YouTube upload guidance. Remux or re-encode only when you have identified a compatibility issue, and keep the original until you have checked the replacement.
Troubleshoot by isolating the failing stage
