You can broadcast one YouTube live event in horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 at the same time using YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Set up dual streaming before you start: YouTube does not let you add the vertical version after the broadcast begins. For a documentary premiere, interview, or live discussion, this lets viewers on the Shorts feed watch vertically while other viewers see the horizontal stream.
Before you start: check channel eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to livestream. Its general eligibility guidance also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. If this is your first time livestreaming, enable it in advance; activation can take time. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup and eligibility guidance.
- Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel before scheduling an event.
- Decide whether you will use YouTube’s built-in dual-stream setup or send two feeds from a third-party encoder.
- Prepare a portrait composition that keeps faces, captions, and essential action inside the vertical frame.
Set up dual streaming in Live Control Room
The built-in workflow is the simplest route when you want YouTube to create both versions from the event. YouTube’s default Live Control Room behavior is to create horizontal and vertical formats together; confirm the setting and preview the result before going live.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Choose an existing scheduled stream or create one.
- Open the event in Live Control Room and go to its settings. Make sure Dual stream is enabled.
- Choose the vertical layout in the editing canvas. YouTube offers Center crop, Fit to phone width, and Stacked.
- Adjust zoom and position, then inspect the preview for clipped faces, graphics, captions, or other important content.
- Test the stream before the event. The vertical version cannot be added after the stream has started.
You can adjust a layout edited through the canvas while live, according to YouTube’s dual-stream instructions. Make framing changes carefully and check the preview so that a correction does not hide essential material.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a layout that suits the footage
| Layout | When it may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Center crop | Useful when the main subject stays near the center of the horizontal shot. | Check that faces, subtitles, and action near the frame edges are not cut off. |
| Fit to phone width | May preserve more of a wide image within the portrait presentation. | Preview the result; unused space may appear around the image. |
| Stacked | May work when two visual regions can be arranged vertically. | Confirm that both regions remain legible and neither crowds out key action. |
These are practical composition considerations, not guaranteed outcomes. Test the actual footage and graphics in the canvas before publishing.
Use a third-party encoder and a separate vertical key
If your production workflow uses an encoder to send separate feeds, configure the vertical stream in Live Control Room before starting. YouTube’s dual-stream guidance describes the following route:

- Open the event’s Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- In the vertical preview, open Auto and select Encoder.
- Choose RTMP(S) and select a second stream key for the vertical feed.
- Configure the encoder so the horizontal and vertical content go to their corresponding keys.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then start the stream from YouTube Studio.
A stream key is a credential that tells an encoder where to send a feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat both keys as sensitive; reset a key if it is compromised. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport in its encoder settings guidance. That page covers encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; the dual-format setup guidance does not establish one mandatory bitrate, resolution, or encoder model for every production.
What viewers see on each device
Dual-format streaming uses one shared stream URL and sends subscribers one go-live notification. Viewers watching from the Shorts feed on mobile see the vertical version; other viewers see the horizontal version. Both versions share the same live chat. The vertical feed can be discovered by people browsing the Shorts feed, including viewers who are not subscribers. These behaviors are described in YouTube’s live-streaming help.

Know which features differ between formats
YouTube’s comparison identifies feature differences between vertical and horizontal live feeds. Feature availability can depend on channel eligibility, so do not assume every monetization or fan-funding feature is enabled for every creator.
| Vertical live | Horizontal live | Both |
|---|---|---|
| Discoverable in Shorts and scrollable alongside other live streams. | Clickable links in chat and the channel description; live pre-roll and mid-roll ads; 4K bitrate broadcast support; Premieres; Live Redirect. | Memberships and gifted memberships. |
For a documentary conversation or event where clickable links, ads, Premieres, or Live Redirect matter, account for those horizontal-only capabilities when planning. The vertical feed’s distinct benefit is the full-screen mobile experience and Shorts-feed discovery.

Preflight and monitor the broadcast
Test well before the event rather than relying on a last-minute preview. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview, confirming the event is accessible from channel and watch pages and on mobile, and monitoring audio, video, and stream-health messages. Use movement and audio comparable to the actual production when testing. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guidance.
- Check that both formats appear as intended and that the portrait frame preserves essential visual information.
- Listen for audio problems and watch for video-quality or stream-health warnings.
- Verify that the event can be opened on the channel/watch page and on a mobile device.
- For a higher-production event, YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders, but it does not name a particular required model for dual-format streaming.
Review performance after the stream
Live Control Room combines metrics for both streams during and after the broadcast. Metrics for the vertical stream alone become available 24 hours after the stream ends. Use the combined view for live monitoring, then return after that delay to review vertical-specific performance. See YouTube’s live-stream metrics help.

Troubleshooting common dual-stream problems
The vertical feed is missing
Dual streaming must be configured before the stream starts. Check whether Dual stream was enabled in the event settings; for an encoder workflow, confirm that the vertical preview is set to Encoder and that a second key is selected. If the broadcast has already begun without the vertical format, YouTube says it cannot be added midstream.
The portrait view cuts off the subject or text
Return to the editing canvas and adjust the crop, zoom, or position. Try another available layout if the source framing does not suit the portrait view, then inspect the preview with the actual graphics and action. YouTube says a canvas-edited layout can still be adjusted while live.
The encoder feed does not appear in the expected format
Check that the horizontal and vertical feeds are being sent to their corresponding stream keys and that the vertical preview is configured for the encoder. Review the preview and stream-health messages before starting the event; YouTube’s encoder guide explains stream settings and secure RTMPS transport.
A stream key may have been exposed
Treat the key as a credential. Reset it if compromised, then update the encoder to use the replacement key before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud
Dual-format live streaming is for broadcasting a live event. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded documentary footage playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for looping uploaded videos and playlists. Upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream continues from the cloud with your computer off. It handles uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
