For local broadcast stations, connect an antenna; for Samsung TV Plus and streaming apps, connect the TV to the internet. If you want a cable-like lineup of live networks, you’ll need a paid live-TV streaming service and internet. “Without cable” means without cable television service—not necessarily without physical cables such as coaxial or HDMI.
Choose the setup that fits what you watch
| What you want | What you need |
|---|---|
| Local broadcast channels, with or without internet | An antenna and a TV with a compatible tuner; reception depends on your location. |
| Free internet-delivered channels | A supported Samsung Smart TV, internet, and any account required for network-based services. |
| Shows and movies on demand | Internet and compatible free or subscription apps. |
| A cable-like selection of live networks | Internet and a paid live-TV streaming service. Check its channel lineup and local availability first. |
| Content from a phone or computer | Wireless casting on compatible devices, or an HDMI connection. |
| No internet connection | An antenna for broadcast TV, or a local HDMI/media source. Streaming apps and Samsung TV Plus will not work offline. |
For a low-cost starting point, combine an antenna for local stations with Samsung TV Plus and other free apps when internet is available. If you want live cable networks or specific sports, check the exact channels and price of a live-TV service before subscribing.
Set up the TV without a cable box
A Samsung Smart TV can use its built-in apps without a cable box. Menu labels vary by model year, software version, remote, and region; you may see Home → Settings or Home → All Settings, and some menus are organized differently.
- Turn on the TV and follow the prompts to choose a language and location and accept the terms, as applicable.
- If you plan to stream, connect the TV to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A wired connection is also an option if your TV and router support it.
- Sign in to or create a Samsung account if prompted. Samsung says network-based smart services may require an account; HDMI sources and terrestrial TV can remain usable without signing in on applicable TVs.
- Install a software update if the TV offers one, then open the Home screen and test an available app or Samsung TV Plus.
- For local broadcast channels, connect an antenna separately and scan for channels as described below.
Samsung’s TV setup guide covers setup and connected features. A non-smart Samsung TV, an older model, or a set whose app platform no longer supports an app can still serve as a display for an antenna or an external device connected by HDMI.

Watch free channels with Samsung TV Plus
Samsung TV Plus is a free, ad-supported service that streams live channels over the internet. Samsung says it is available on supported Samsung Smart TVs released in 2016 or later in select regions; the exact model and local availability matter. It does not require a cable box, antenna, separate streaming device, subscription, or credit card, but it does require internet. Samsung also says a Samsung account may be required for network-based smart services. TV Plus is not a way to receive every local broadcast station, premium network, or cable channel, and its lineup can change.
- Press Home on the remote and choose Samsung TV Plus from the Home screen or app bar.
- Browse the channel guide. On compatible remotes, pressing inward on the CH control may open it; some standard remotes have a GUIDE button.
- To remove unwanted channels on supported software, open TV Plus and its channel guide, choose Edit, select channels, choose Delete, and save.
Some TVs automatically open TV Plus at startup or when you exit another app. If you want to change that behavior, look for Settings → General → Smart Features → Autorun Samsung TV Plus; the path may differ by model.
If Samsung TV Plus is missing or not playing
- Check the internet connection and confirm that the model and region support the service.
- Sign in to the Samsung account if the TV requests it, then restart the TV and router and check for a software update.
- If TV Plus channels have changed or disappeared, Samsung may have updated the lineup.
- Reset Smart Hub only after simpler checks. A reset can require you to sign back in to apps. Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions include Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → Reset Smart Hub on some models; the default PIN is commonly listed as 0000, but it may have been changed and the path varies.
See Samsung’s TV Plus support page and its TV Plus Help Center for service details and availability.

Get local channels with an antenna
An antenna receives broadcast signals directly, so it does not need cable TV or internet. Depending on reception at your address, you may receive stations such as ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and subchannels. An antenna generally does not provide cable networks such as ESPN, CNN, HGTV, or Food Network.
Reception depends on tower distance and direction, terrain, buildings, antenna height and placement, indoor interference, and whether the antenna suits the signals available locally. Check your address with AntennaWeb or the FCC digital-TV reception maps before choosing an antenna. AntennaWeb advises checking actual reception rather than relying only on an advertised mileage figure.
Connect and scan for channels
- Connect the antenna’s coaxial cable to the TV’s ANT IN port. If your setup uses a One Connect Box, connect it there instead.
- Press Home and change the source to TV. Samsung’s Broadcasting menu may be unavailable while a streaming app or another source is active.
- Open Settings or All Settings, then choose Broadcasting → Auto Program.
- Select Air, start the scan, and choose Close when it finishes. The Cable option in this menu is for a cable signal source; it does not mean you need a cable-TV subscription.
- Test the channels you care about. If you move or reorient the antenna, scan again.
Samsung’s channel-scan guide gives this path, though menu wording varies by model.

If the scan or reception fails
- Broadcasting is grayed out: Change the source to TV and close any streaming app. Check the coaxial connection as well.
- No channels are found: Confirm the antenna is connected, choose Air rather than Cable, move the antenna higher or nearer a window, aim it toward local towers, and scan again.
- Channels break up: Try a clearer or higher position, check connectors and splitters, and reassess the antenna type for your reception conditions.
- A powered antenna makes reception worse: An amplifier cannot fix poor placement and may overload a strong signal.
- Channel numbers look unexpected: A station’s digital virtual channel number may differ from its physical radio-frequency channel.
- No channels appear despite a working antenna: Some displays or regional products may lack a built-in tuner and need an external tuner or network TV device.
Install apps for shows, movies, and other free content
Connect the TV to the internet, open its Apps section from Home, search for a service, and install it if it is available for your TV. Open the app and sign in or subscribe as required. App support depends on the TV model, operating system, country, and the service; a “smart” label does not guarantee that every app is available.
Free, ad-supported apps may offer news, weather, movies, older shows, sports highlights, local-station programming, public media, or creator videos. Search the TV’s app store for what is available rather than assuming a fixed list. Subscription on-demand services are usually aimed at shows and movies, not a full cable-style live lineup. Before paying, check the desired programs, advertising, simultaneous streams, 4K availability, offline-download rules, and Samsung TV compatibility.

- Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the video, photo, or audio on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac and tap its AirPlay icon.
- Select the Samsung TV and enter the on-screen code if prompted.
If AirPlay does not connect, check that both devices share the same network, review the TV’s AirPlay settings, then restart the devices and update their software. A missing or grayed-out option can also relate to Smart Hub state, accepted terms, or Samsung-account status. Try a Smart Hub reset only after simpler checks; its menu and PIN behavior vary. See Samsung’s AirPlay troubleshooting guide and grayed-out settings troubleshooting.
Mirror a Samsung Galaxy phone
Depending on the phone and software, use Smart View, SmartThings, Tap View, or the phone’s screen-casting controls. Wireless mirroring generally requires the phone and TV to be on the same network. Some protected-video apps block mirroring even when photos or other phone content display normally. Samsung’s screen-mirroring guide covers supported approaches.
Connect by HDMI instead
An HDMI adapter from a phone or tablet, or an HDMI cable from a computer, can be more reliable than wireless casting. The device and adapter must support the needed video output, and some services restrict playback through particular adapters or displays. After connecting, change the TV source to the corresponding HDMI input.

Use a computer or USB media
A computer can play browser-based services on the TV over HDMI; wireless display or casting may be available on compatible devices. USB playback can work for compatible files, but file-format support varies. HDMI is usually the more predictable option when Wi-Fi is unreliable or casting is unavailable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use an external streaming device when built-in apps fall short
A Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV device, game console, or similar HDMI device can add apps when the Samsung platform is slow, lacks a desired app, or no longer receives the version you need. It can also make a familiar interface easier to move between TVs. Check the device’s app support and compatibility before buying.
The trade-offs are another device, account, remote or HDMI input, possible privacy and advertising differences, and continued reliance on internet for streaming. An external streaming stick provides apps; it does not automatically provide local broadcast stations. Those require an antenna, an app or service that carries them, or a network tuner.
Replace cable with a live-TV streaming service
Live-TV streaming is the closest substitute for a cable package when you want multiple live networks, a channel guide, sports, or cloud DVR. It requires internet and a recurring subscription. Compare services by the channels you actually watch, not just the advertised channel count.

Quick Recap
Fix common setup problems
- The TV has no internet: Check Wi-Fi or Ethernet settings and the router. Antenna channels and HDMI sources can still work without internet, but apps and TV Plus cannot.
- An app is missing: Check the model and region’s app support and software version. If the app is unsupported, use a compatible external HDMI device or a computer.
- The remote will not change source: Open Home and choose the source/input control, then select TV for antenna channels or the correct HDMI input for an external device. The exact control varies by remote.
- Streaming buffers: Check the connection at the TV, restart the router and TV, and reduce competing network use. A wired Ethernet connection may help if available.
- The antenna scan is empty or the Broadcasting menu is unavailable: Confirm TV is selected as the source, the antenna is connected to ANT IN, and the scan is set to Air.
Practical cable-free combinations
- Free local TV: Antenna plus Samsung TV Plus and other free apps when internet is available. This minimizes subscriptions but does not provide every cable network.
- Free online viewing: Samsung TV Plus and free apps over internet, without an antenna if local broadcast reception is not a priority.
- Shows and movies: One or more on-demand subscriptions, chosen for the programs you watch, plus free services where useful.
- Cable-like live TV: An antenna for available local stations plus a live-TV streaming package for the networks and sports it actually carries.
