To use Wowza for a 24/7 YouTube stream, first identify whether you use self-managed Wowza Streaming Engine or hosted Wowza Video: their YouTube workflows differ. In Streaming Engine, create a YouTube Live event, add YouTube as an RTMP stream target in a Live application, and enable the Engine Transcoder only if the incoming codecs or output renditions require it. Wowza Video sends a selected output rendition to YouTube, which performs the transcoding. Neither setup, by itself, guarantees uninterrupted availability.
Choose the Wowza workflow that matches your product
| Decision | Wowza Streaming Engine | Wowza Video |
|---|---|---|
| Product model | Self-managed Streaming Engine application and target | Wowza-hosted streaming workflow |
| YouTube connection | YouTube Live stream target in a Live application, using RTMP | Configure a selected output rendition as a YouTube target |
| Where transcoding happens | The Engine Transcoder can decode and re-encode according to its templates | Wowza’s guide says YouTube transcodes the stream sent from Wowza Video |
| 24/7 qualification | The reviewed Engine-to-YouTube instructions describe a live stream setup, not an Engine 24/7 uptime guarantee | A 24×7 channel mode exists, with recording, 4K, and billing constraints described below |
Do not treat the two workflows as interchangeable or assume that “24/7” means guaranteed uninterrupted YouTube availability. [Wowza Streaming Engine YouTube guide] [Wowza Video YouTube guide]
Set up a YouTube target in Wowza Streaming Engine
1. Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream event you intend to use.
- Copy the event’s Stream URL and Stream key. Treat the key as a secret: anyone with access to it may be able to publish to that event.
2. Configure the Engine Live application and target
- In Wowza Streaming Engine, create or select a Live application for the incoming source.
- In that application’s Stream Targets settings, add a YouTube Live destination.
- Select the incoming Source Stream Name, then map the YouTube destination host and application using the Stream URL from YouTube Studio. Configure the target to send over RTMP.
Wowza’s guide describes sending the source stream from the Live application to YouTube over RTMP. The incoming source must include audio as well as video. [Wowza Streaming Engine YouTube guide]
Decide whether to transcode or transrate
Check the actual input video and audio codecs and your intended YouTube output before choosing a template. Transcoding is not automatically required simply because you are sending a stream through Wowza.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use Transcode when the input video is not H.264 and/or the audio is not AAC or MP3, according to Wowza’s documented distinction.
- Use Transrate when the input is H.264 video with AAC or MP3 audio and you need multiple bitrate outputs. Wowza describes these variants as keyframe-aligned.
Enable the Engine Transcoder
- Open the Live application’s Transcoder settings in Wowza Streaming Engine and enable the Transcoder.
- Choose a template appropriate to the input and desired output renditions, or customize its output presets. Templates determine how the input is processed and encoded; do not select one without checking the source codecs and intended output.
- Restart the application for the change to take effect.
Wowza’s Transcoder guide describes a limit of up to 10 concurrent transcoded channels per instance per month in its documented context. Licensing and limits can depend on the current account and plan, so confirm the limit that applies to your deployment with Wowza before relying on it. [Wowza Transcoder guide]
Start the source and verify the full path
- Start the source encoder and send its stream to the Engine Live application.
- In Wowza Manager, check that the incoming stream is active and that the YouTube stream target is connected or running.
- Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that its preview receives both video and audio.
- Test the complete path before depending on it for an ongoing channel. A working source-to-Wowza connection alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving the target.
Use the separate Wowza Video workflow
- In YouTube Studio, create or choose the live event and copy its Stream URL and Stream key.
- In Wowza Video, configure the YouTube target using those event details and select the output rendition to send.
- Start the Wowza workflow, then verify the incoming preview, including audio, in YouTube Live Control Room.
For this workflow, Wowza’s documentation says YouTube—not Wowza Video—performs transcoding on the live stream. Do not apply the Engine Transcoder steps above to this Video workflow. [Wowza Video YouTube guide]

Understand Wowza Video’s 24×7 constraints
Wowza Video’s 24×7 billing mode is intended for an always-on channel and continues until stopped manually or on a schedule; the documentation says it does not automatically stop after a 20-minute transcoder idle period. That does not establish a guarantee of uninterrupted YouTube availability.
- Wowza Video 24×7 streams cannot be recorded and do not support 4K.
- Billing mode and stream type are locked after stream creation, so choose carefully at setup.
- Passthrough sends one rendition matching the source’s video and audio bitrate, H.264 profile, frame rate, aspect ratio, and keyframe interval. It requires a 24×7 subscription, is unavailable in some broadcast locations, and is not 4K.
- These constraints apply to Wowza Video’s documented 24×7 and passthrough options, not to every Streaming Engine deployment.

Check YouTube output settings and account readiness
Wowza’s Video guide reproduces a YouTube maximum of 2160 (3840 Ă— 2160) at 60 fps, and says to set a keyframe at least every two seconds and no less often than every four seconds. Wowza cautions that YouTube requirements can change; verify current encoder settings in YouTube’s own guidance before configuring a production stream. These figures are reproduced in Wowza’s guide, not a separate current YouTube verification. [Wowza Video YouTube guide]
The reviewed setup instructions do not establish your account’s eligibility to stream, nor do they provide a complete current bitrate table. Confirm YouTube Live access and applicable encoder settings in your account before scheduling a continuous broadcast. A keyframe interval setting is not a substitute for checking the current requirements.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube preview does not appear | Target configuration, RTMP destination details, source stream name, and whether the source is reaching the Engine application | Recheck the YouTube Stream URL mapping and selected source stream; verify the target and incoming stream status in Wowza Manager. |
| Video arrives but there is no audio | Whether the source actually includes an audio track | Send a source with audio and confirm audio in YouTube Live Control Room; Wowza’s Engine guide says the stream must include audio. |
| The target rejects or fails to process the input | Input video/audio codecs and chosen Transcoder mode | Check whether the source fits Wowza’s Transcode distinction (non-H.264 video and/or non-AAC/MP3 audio) or the Transrate case (H.264 with AAC or MP3), then select a suitable template. |
| Transcoder setting appears not to take effect | Whether the Engine application was restarted after enabling it | Restart the application after changing the Transcoder setting, then check the stream and target status again. |
| A 24×7 Wowza Video setup cannot be changed to another billing mode | Billing mode and stream type are fixed after creation | Check the desired mode and feature constraints before creating a stream; the setup documentation says they cannot be changed afterward. |
