Yes. Wowza Streaming Engine (WSE) documents a way to publish a video-on-demand file as live content and repeat a file or playlist. The key distinction is that looping the source in Wowza and delivering it to YouTube are separate steps: you must confirm that your WSE version and output path use an ingest protocol YouTube currently accepts. The available documentation does not establish one universal, version-independent direct WSE-to-YouTube setup.
How the Wowza loop works
WSE uses the ServerListenerStreamDemoPublisher server listener to publish a VOD source as a live stream. Wowza documents repeat controls for the source publisher: playlistRepeat=true repeats a file or playlist, while publishRepeat=true republishes after a configured publishDuration. The latter requires publishDuration to be greater than zero; publishPauseTime sets the delay before republishing in that mode.
Wowza’s documentation says that, once the listener is enabled, the VOD file loops until it is terminated. That describes repetition at the Wowza source; it does not by itself configure YouTube delivery or prove that a particular installation can connect directly to YouTube.
Configure WSE to repeat a file or playlist
Before you start
- Confirm you can administer the relevant WSE installation and restart its server after configuration changes.
- Choose the source file or prepare a playlist. The documented listener setup lists MP4, MP3 and M3U8 as supported source types.
- Decide whether the desired behavior is continuous playlist repetition or republishing after a timed publishing interval; the controls are not interchangeable.
Set up a single file
- In WSE Manager or the applicable
Server.xmlconfiguration, configure theServerListenerStreamDemoPublisherlistener. The listener can be configured through either route; consult the instructions for your installed WSE version for the precise Manager fields or XML placement. - Set
srcStreamto the name of the video file you want to publish. - For a file or playlist that should repeat, set
playlistRepeat=true. If instead using timed republishing, setpublishRepeat=true, configure apublishDurationgreater than zero, and setpublishPauseTimeif a delay before republishing is needed. - Apply the configuration and restart WSE, as changes to this listener setup require a server restart.
- Test the resulting Wowza stream and confirm that it repeats as intended before connecting it to a public YouTube broadcast.
Build a playlist
Wowza’s documented example uses an M3U8 text file placed in the installation content directory, with one stream name on each line. Point the listener at it by setting srcStream=m3u8:filelist.m3u8. In the example, random=false and timeBetweenItems control whether items play in listed order and the gap between them. Use the values appropriate to your intended sequence, then test playback before sending the stream onward.

Connect the Wowza output to YouTube
YouTube treats a live broadcast as an event associated with a live stream carrying the audio/video feed. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, obtain the stream key and ingest details, then configure the sending encoder or compatible output path to use them. The exact path from WSE to YouTube depends on the WSE version and protocol: the documented Wowza loop configuration does not establish that every WSE installation can publish directly to YouTube without a relay or another compatible encoder.
Check the protocol and output formats supported by your specific WSE setup against YouTube’s current ingest options before scheduling an event. Do not assume that a protocol accepted by one endpoint is automatically compatible with the other.

If using YouTube HLS ingest
YouTube’s HLS requirements are protocol-specific. Google specifies HTTPS uploads, a rolling media playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, MPEG-TS segment format, and segment durations of 1–4 seconds. The media must contain muxed audio and video in a single encoded stream. HLS sends segments rather than one continuous stream, so Google notes that it has higher latency than RTMP. These requirements do not apply automatically to other supported ingest protocols; follow the requirements for the protocol you actually use.
Check YouTube eligibility before scheduling
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The same help page states that a streamer must be at least 16 years old. Confirm channel access and eligibility before relying on an unattended loop for a planned broadcast.

Keep the broadcast honest and rights-cleared
A file being transmitted as a live stream is still prerecorded material. Make sure the title, description and other presentation do not imply that a recording is happening live, and set audience expectations about the repeated content. Confirm you have the necessary rights to the video, music and other included material. A looping configuration does not change YouTube’s copyright rules or guarantee that content will remain available.

Self-hosted Wowza Streaming Engine
WSE gives you control over the source publisher and its repeat behavior, but you are responsible for the Engine configuration, server restart, testing, and a compatible route to YouTube. Confirm protocol compatibility and consider what will happen if the host or the connection to the destination fails during the broadcast.

Wowza Video has a separate file-stream workflow with a continuous-loop transcoder property. Wowza warns that enabling it overrides the idle timeout; the transcoder continues to run and accrue charges until you manually stop it. Account for that ongoing runtime when choosing this managed route.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The source plays once and stops: Check that the intended repeat property is enabled. For timed republishing, verify that
publishRepeatis enabled andpublishDurationis greater than zero. - The playlist does not load or items are missing: Check that the M3U8 text file is in the expected installation content directory, that
srcStreamrefers to the correct file, and that each listed stream name is valid. Test the Wowza output before involving YouTube. - Wowza output works, but YouTube does not receive it: Verify the YouTube stream key and ingest configuration, then check protocol compatibility for the exact WSE version and any relay or encoder in the path. A working Wowza loop alone does not establish an end-to-end connection.
- HLS ingest rejects or delays the feed: If HLS is the selected protocol, check HTTPS delivery, the rolling playlist limit, TS segments, 1–4 second segment lengths, and muxed audio and video in one encoded stream. Expect more latency than RTMP.
- A scheduled stream cannot go live: Check channel verification, any live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and the age requirement in YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
- A managed loop keeps accruing charges: For Wowza Video’s continuous-loop transcoder, stop the transcoder manually when it is no longer needed.
