VLC can play and repeat a playlist, but that alone does not create a YouTube livestream. You also need an encoder or other verified output path that sends a compatible feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Treat playlist playback and YouTube delivery as two separate jobs—and test the complete path before relying on it.
What VLC does—and what YouTube still needs
VLC can serve as the local playback source for prerecorded videos. YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder configured with the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. YouTube’s instructions state: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes that workflow.
The available official guidance does not establish a complete, tested procedure for sending a looping VLC playlist directly to YouTube. VLC’s playback controls and the encoder’s YouTube output are therefore separate configuration points. Confirm that the VLC build and chosen encoder or output route work together; do not assume that a playlist repeat setting also starts, maintains, or recovers a YouTube broadcast.
Prepare the playlist and rights
Use media you are authorized to broadcast
Include only video and audio you have permission to stream. A video being available online, or suitable for children, does not by itself grant broadcast rights. YouTube says copyright restrictions can affect live streams, including matches to another copyrighted live broadcast. Review YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions and its applicable copyright and Community Guidelines before scheduling a continuous stream.

Set VLC to repeat the playlist
Add the authorized recordings to a VLC playlist and configure the repeat behavior for the VLC version and operating system you use. The exact controls are version-dependent; the official VLC-specific loop-to-YouTube procedure is not established here, so verify the playlist repeats locally rather than relying on an assumed menu path or command.
Play through the end of the playlist during your test. Confirm that VLC returns to the first item, that the next item starts as expected, and that audio and video remain present. A local repeat test checks playback only; it does not verify delivery to YouTube.

Set up the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room. Verify that the channel is eligible: YouTube says it must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Create or select the live stream. Set its title, description, visibility, schedule, and other event details for the actual program.
- Set the audience accurately in Live Control Room. Choose “Yes, it’s ‘Made for Kids’” or “No, it’s not ‘Made for Kids’” based on the content and applicable requirements—not simply because the title or intended viewers mention children. See YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key from the event’s encoder settings. Keep the key private: it authorizes an encoder to send video to that stream.
Connect VLC playback to a YouTube-compatible encoder
Choose an output route that accepts the VLC playback source and can send a format supported by YouTube. That might involve a separate encoder; verify compatibility for the exact software versions and operating system rather than assuming VLC itself can deliver the feed in every configuration. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder’s YouTube output settings.
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds recommended, not exceeding 4 seconds. Frame rates up to 60 fps are listed. These are YouTube ingest settings, not proof that a particular VLC build exposes or supports each setting. Check the encoder’s own controls and select settings it actually supports. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

YouTube also documents HLS ingest for encoder vendors, but that guide describes a protocol and packaging workflow rather than a ready-made VLC setup. Do not treat it as a direct VLC configuration recipe. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.
Preview, test, and monitor before relying on the stream
- Start the VLC playlist and the configured encoder output, then check Live Control Room for the incoming preview.
- Confirm the correct video, audio, and event are present. Check the stream health indicators and verify the event is accessible with its chosen visibility.
- Test long enough to observe a playlist transition and, if possible, a complete loop. Check that the encoder continues sending after VLC advances or repeats.
- During operation, monitor both picture and sound. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, testing the encoder, previewing, checking accessibility, and continuously monitoring the stream in its live-streaming tips.
A VLC repeat setting is not an automatic recovery guarantee. Decide who will notice a stopped source or lost encoder feed and how they will restart it; confirm recovery behavior with your actual setup rather than assuming it.

Account for kids’ content features
When a stream is set as Made for Kids, YouTube disables features including live chat, comments, notifications, personalized advertising, and saving to playlists or Watch Later. YouTube says personalized ads are not served on kids’ content; contextual ads may appear on live streams. Do not plan audience interaction around disabled features or assume personalized-ad revenue. See YouTube’s Made for Kids feature information and its guidance on ads on live streams.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the limits of a 24/7 broadcast
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that threshold, so do not assume it will produce one uninterrupted 24-hour archive. Plan separately for any recordings you need to keep and check YouTube’s current archive behavior; the stated threshold is not a promise of uninterrupted livestream uptime. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC repeats locally, but YouTube shows no live preview: Playlist looping is only the source side. Check that the encoder is running, accepts the VLC source, and has the correct server URL and stream key.
- YouTube reports an invalid or missing feed: Recheck the copied URL and key in the encoder, and make sure they belong to the selected event. Keep the key private.
- Video or audio is missing or unstable: Check the full source-to-encoder path, confirm the selected codecs and bitrate mode are supported by YouTube, and inspect Live Control Room’s stream health. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, no greater than 4 seconds.
- The playlist stops or fails to return to its beginning: Test repeat behavior in the specific VLC build and inspect the playlist order and files. Do not assume YouTube or the encoder will restart VLC automatically.
- The stream ends unexpectedly: Check whether VLC, the encoder, the computer, or the network stopped providing the feed. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring; recovery behavior depends on the actual setup.
- Chat or other engagement controls are unavailable: Check the event’s audience setting. Made for Kids streams have feature restrictions, including disabled live chat and comments.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; there is one free day per account. StreamNeo plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo for details.
For a kids’ channel, you remain responsible for using content you have rights to broadcast and setting the audience accurately in YouTube. The cloud changes where playback runs; it does not change YouTube’s content rules.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free first day at StreamNeo registration.
