You can use VAAPI for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream only if your specific Intel graphics device, Linux media stack, and OBS build expose a suitable hardware-encoding profile—and your production setup can sustain it. Verify H.264 encoding on the actual device before configuring OBS; Intel graphics do not all support the same codecs or profiles.
What VAAPI does—and what it does not guarantee
VAAPI (Video Acceleration API) is the interface Linux media software uses to access hardware video acceleration. Intel’s media stack includes the Intel Media Driver, libva, libva-utils, and media APIs; the driver provides encoding, decoding, and video-processing support on supported graphics hardware. The exact packages and installation commands depend on your Linux distribution. See Intel’s libva project and the Intel Media Driver project.
VAAPI being available does not establish that a device can encode the codec, profile, resolution, and frame rate you need. Intel’s capability references distinguish platforms, codecs, bit depth, chroma format, and encode limits. Check the documentation for your exact processor or GPU model, not just its product family. Intel’s oneVPL hardware reference and the media-driver feature matrix are starting points; verify that the relevant table applies to your device and driver.
Verify the Intel device and VAAPI encode profile
- Identify the exact graphics device. Find the full processor or GPU model, then use Intel’s generation-specific capability information to check its AVC/H.264 encode support and limits. Do not infer encoding capability from decoder support or from another Intel device of the same broad family.
- Use your distribution’s supported media stack. Install or enable its Intel media driver, libva, and VAAPI utilities according to the distribution’s documentation. The reviewed official guidance does not establish one installation recipe that works across distributions.
- Check the device visible to OBS. Confirm that the intended render device is accessible to the user and process running OBS, and that the installed driver exposes the needed encode profile. If multiple graphics devices are present, verify that OBS is using the intended one.
- Verify AVC/H.264 encoding at 3840×2160. For the broadest ingest compatibility, start with H.264. Confirm support for the target encode profile and resolution on this actual device; a VAAPI decoder profile alone is not sufficient evidence.
If you are selecting hardware, compare the exact generation’s encode profiles and limits with the Linux driver and firmware support available for your distribution. Intel’s documentation is organized by platform and codec, so there is no reliable brand-wide answer to “Can Intel graphics encode 4K?”

Configure OBS for YouTube Live at 4K60
OBS control names and the VAAPI encoder’s availability vary with the Linux packaging and build. The official guidance reviewed does not establish a universal VAAPI label or identical controls across OBS packages. Use the encoder that your installed OBS actually exposes, and confirm its behavior in a test stream.
- Set the video output. In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set the base (canvas) resolution and output (scaled) resolution to 3840×2160 if your scene is genuinely composed for 4K, and set the output frame rate to 60 fps. OBS’s general configuration guidance covers output resolution and FPS: OBS streaming guidance.
- Select hardware encoding. Open Settings > Output and choose the Intel VAAPI hardware encoder if your OBS build offers it. Use streaming output rather than assuming a recording preset will carry over. If the encoder or required options are absent, troubleshoot the installed driver, device access, and OBS build before proceeding.
- Set rate control and keyframes. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. If the VAAPI controls in your OBS build do not expose these settings, consult documentation for that build rather than substituting guessed values.
- Choose a video bitrate for the ingest codec. YouTube’s current live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, lists these 4K/2160p at 60 fps figures:
| Ingest codec | YouTube-listed minimum video bitrate | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s ingest video-bitrate figures, not a guarantee that your connection will deliver a stable stream. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current guidance. H.265 or AV1 can use the lower listed recommendation, but only choose one if your Intel hardware, driver, and OBS build expose and sustain the required encode path. H.264 is the straightforward default when compatibility is the priority.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Set audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. AAC is required for 5.1 surround support over RTMP/RTMPS. Choose the audio configuration that matches your program and ingest setup.
- Match color to the content. For ordinary SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit output. HDR is a separate configuration: YouTube recommends HEVC for HDR and requires 10-bit video. Verify that the specific Intel device and OBS encoder expose the necessary HDR profile before attempting it.
- Use YouTube’s current ingest details. YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1 at up to 60 fps, and recommends RTMPS. Get the ingest URL and stream key from the current YouTube Live Control Room; do not reuse or disclose a key publicly.
Test the complete 4K60 production before going live
A successful hardware encode test does not prove that capture, composition, audio, network, and sustained 60 fps will all work together. OBS notes that system compatibility alone does not guarantee streaming capability; workload depends on resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. See OBS system requirements and its hardware encoding guidance.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using the same capture sources, overlays, scene transitions, motion, and audio you expect in the live program.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and confirm the output remains at 3840×2160 and 60 fps.
- Watch OBS’s statistics for rendering lag, encoding overload, and dropped frames. Treat these as separate symptoms: rendering lag can indicate a scene or GPU rendering problem, encoding overload can indicate an encoder or system limitation, and network health problems can point to the upload path.
- Repeat the test long enough to assess sustained performance, not just a brief successful start. If the complete setup cannot hold stable output, reduce resolution or frame rate and test again.
“Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” — YouTube Help, Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Troubleshoot a missing or unstable Intel VAAPI encoder
- VAAPI encoder is missing from OBS: Confirm that the Intel media driver and libva stack are installed through your distribution, that OBS can access the intended render device, and that your OBS build includes the relevant encoder. A working VAAPI decoder does not prove the encode profile is available.
- The needed codec or resolution is unavailable: Recheck the exact Intel model against Intel’s platform-specific encode documentation, then compare it with the profile exposed by the installed driver. Do not assume every Intel generation or graphics product supports the same codec, bit depth, or maximum resolution.
- CBR or VBR bitrate control is unavailable or behaves unexpectedly: Intel’s media-driver documentation flags HuC firmware as relevant to low-power AVC/HEVC/VP9/AV1 bitrate-control modes, including CBR and VBR. Firmware and kernel behavior vary by platform. Follow your distribution’s supported firmware and kernel instructions; do not apply a kernel setting copied from an unrelated system. See the Intel media-driver feature documentation.
- OBS reports rendering lag: Reduce scene complexity or output demands and test again. This symptom is not by itself proof that VAAPI encoding failed.
- OBS reports encoding overload: Check the selected encoder, output settings, and sustained system load. Test a lower resolution or frame rate to determine whether the full setup can sustain the target.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped network frames: Check the upload path and test at the intended video bitrate. YouTube’s recommended bitrate is an ingest target, not evidence that a particular connection is stable at that rate.
- Video works but audio or color is wrong: Check the OBS audio codec and channel configuration, then verify that SDR uses Rec. 709/8-bit or that the separate HDR path is configured with a supported HEVC 10-bit profile.
