How to Use OBS Replay Buffer or Media Sources for an Always-On YouTube Stream

Loop one video or a playlist in OBS, connect the encoder to YouTube, and learn why Replay Buffer is not a looping or recovery feature.

To loop a video in OBS, add a Media Source, choose the file, and enable Loop. To repeat a playlist, add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. OBS Replay Buffer does something different: it saves recent output when you trigger its hotkey; it does not loop media or keep a stream running by itself.

For a long-running YouTube broadcast, connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room, test the full scene and audio, monitor stream health, and keep a local recording if you need an archive. OBS runs on your computer, so that computer and its internet connection must remain available. For a cloud alternative, see StreamNeo.

Choose the OBS feature that fits the job

Need OBS feature What it does
Repeat one video file Media Source with Loop enabled Restarts the selected file when playback finishes.
Repeat or shuffle multiple files VLC Video source Plays a playlist; its documented settings include Loop Playlist and shuffle. VLC must be installed.
Save the most recent output on demand Replay Buffer Stores recent OBS output for saving with an assigned hotkey. It does not restart or loop a media source.

OBS calls the visual layouts scenes and the items inside them sources. A scene can combine the looping video with backgrounds, text, overlays, and audio, but each source still needs to be configured and checked separately. See the OBS guide to media sources and scenes and sources.

Loop a single video file in OBS

  1. In the Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source.
  2. Name the source, then select OK.
  3. In the source properties, enable Local File if shown, browse to the video, and select OK.
  4. Open the source properties again and enable Loop. Check that the source is visible in the scene and that its bounds fit the canvas.
  5. Start playback in the OBS preview. Watch through the end of the file and confirm it starts again, including the transition and audio.

OBS lists support for video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Check the current Media Sources documentation if a file does not load as expected.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Loop a playlist or shuffle several videos

  1. Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC; OBS documents this matching requirement for its VLC-backed source.
  2. In OBS, select + in the Sources dock and choose VLC Video.
  3. Add the files to the playlist in the source properties. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the list; use the shuffle setting if you want the order varied.
  4. Confirm the playlist order, source visibility, audio levels, and playback in the preview. Let the playlist reach its end once to verify the loop.

Unlike a single Media Source, VLC Video introduces a VLC installation dependency. If you need only one file, Media Source is the simpler choice. OBS documents VLC Video and its settings in the Media Sources guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live event.
  2. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder settings in OBS. The stream key is a credential that allows the encoder to send an accepted feed; treat it like a password and do not share it publicly.
  3. Configure OBS’s output and video settings for the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you intend to use. Choose settings that your computer can encode and your upload connection can sustain.
  4. Start streaming from OBS, then check the event preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before making the stream public or relying on it.

YouTube’s setup and monitoring guidance is in its live streaming tips. The exact YouTube and OBS screen labels may vary as their interfaces change.

Set bitrate, keyframes, and quality for your connection

There is no single correct bitrate for every stream. YouTube’s recommended H.264 examples below are platform targets, not a guarantee that a particular encoder or upload line can sustain them. Its recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the current YouTube encoder settings for the combination you use.

H.264 example from YouTube’s current guidance Recommended bitrate
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 34 Mbps

YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Set OBS to the recommended interval where the relevant encoder setting is available. Before a long broadcast, test the actual resolution and frame rate, representative motion and sound, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. A quiet still image can behave differently from fast-moving footage.

OBS notes that computer requirements depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; compatibility with OBS alone does not establish that a computer can encode a particular production reliably. See the OBS system requirements.

Test the whole broadcast before leaving it running

  • Picture: Check framing, overlays, source order, visibility, and whether the video fills the intended canvas.
  • Sound: Listen to the program audio and any other active sources; check for clipping, silence, or unwanted overlap.
  • Playback: Verify the file or playlist restarts correctly and that transitions do not leave an unintended blank or silent gap.
  • Connection: Preview the feed in Live Control Room and watch stream health while representative audio and motion are playing.
  • Recording: If making a local backup, confirm recording is enabled and that the output file is being written where expected.

YouTube advises creators to test and monitor streams and check the integrity of local archive files in its live streaming tips. OBS can stream and record, but both tasks add demands on the computer and storage; choose settings and test them under the conditions you expect to use.

Use Replay Buffer for clips, not looping or unattended recovery

Replay Buffer is useful when you want to save a recent segment of OBS output after it happens—for example, a moment you want to review later. Enable Replay Buffer in OBS’s output settings, choose the buffer duration and any available limits appropriate to your system, then assign a hotkey in OBS’s hotkey settings to save the replay. OBS describes the feature as saving recent output through a hotkey in its OBS Studio overview.

It is separate from the playback controls on Media Source and VLC Video. It does not make a video restart, and neither the Replay Buffer nor OBS startup options establish a complete recovery system for power loss, operating-system restarts, software crashes, network outages, or a dropped YouTube connection. OBS documents startup flags such as --startreplaybuffer and --startstreaming, but those options alone are not a guarantee of unattended recovery; see OBS launch parameters.

Plan archives for streams longer than 12 hours

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. For a genuinely continuous broadcast, do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as the only copy: enable local recording if your system and storage can support it, and verify that the file is intact. These limits and recommendations are in YouTube’s archive guidance.

Estimate storage from the actual recording bitrate and the duration you need to retain, then allow space for the recording format and other files. An external drive can be used for a local archive, but no particular capacity is right without those inputs.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The video stops at the end: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For multiple files, check Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source.
  • VLC Video is missing or will not load: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for the documented source.
  • The source is playing but not visible: Check its visibility icon and position in the Sources list, then adjust its transform and confirm it is inside the canvas.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Check the selected event, stream URL, and stream key in OBS. Keep the key private; replace it in OBS if it has been exposed.
  • Stream health reports problems or playback stutters: Check the upload connection and encoder load, then reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate as needed. Re-test with representative motion and audio rather than assuming one bitrate suits every setup.
  • The live archive is missing: If the stream exceeded 12 hours, YouTube says it may not have been captured. Use a local recording for the backup and verify the file after recording.
  • Replay Buffer did not save a clip: Confirm the buffer is enabled and the save-replay hotkey is assigned and pressed. Replay Buffer requires its own activation and trigger; it is not a media-loop setting.
