Use object storage as the origin for video files, then deliver playback through a CDN. For on-demand video, encode and package the source into segments and manifests your player supports; for live delivery, have a media pipeline write stream outputs while viewers request them through the CDN. Storage alone does not create an adaptive stream or provide the full delivery workflow.
What object storage does in a streaming setup
Object storage holds media objects—such as source recordings, encoded renditions, segments, and manifests—and makes them available to other parts of the delivery system. It is usually the origin, not the service that prepares video or handles every viewer request. In an S3-and-CloudFront design, for example, CloudFront can fetch an object from S3 on a cache miss and serve cached content to viewers.
A typical viewer request therefore follows this path: the player requests a manifest or media segment from a CDN; the CDN serves a cached copy when available or fetches it from the object-store origin; the player buffers and decodes the returned media. AWS documents S3 paired with CloudFront for on-demand video. Google Cloud’s media workload guidance recommends sending customer traffic for both VOD and livestream distribution through a CDN.
Build a video-on-demand workflow
- Upload the source asset. Store the original recording in a bucket. Keep the source distinct from delivery outputs so it can be reprocessed without being confused with player-ready media.
- Encode and package it. Produce the renditions and delivery format your player supports. Adaptive streaming requires media split into segments plus manifest files; a single stored MP4 is not, by itself, an adaptive stream. AWS lists HLS, MPEG-DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF among common formats.
- Store the packaged outputs. Put the manifests and their referenced segments where the CDN can retrieve them. Preserve the directory paths and object names expected by references inside the manifests.
- Configure the CDN origin. Point the CDN at the bucket or supported storage endpoint. Set caching rules with the update pattern in mind: immutable, versioned segment names can be cached differently from manifests or objects that may be replaced.
- Serve the CDN URL to the player. The player should request the manifest and segments through the CDN, rather than sending every viewer directly to the storage origin.
- Test playback from the viewer’s path. Check manifest retrieval, segment retrieval, seeking, cache behavior, and any access-control rules from the same public or authenticated route the player will use.
AWS’s official S3 documentation provides a tutorial pairing S3 and CloudFront for on-demand video. The exact setup depends on the provider, CDN, player, and access model; the architecture is more portable than any one provider’s console steps.

Adapt the design for livestreaming
For live delivery, a transcoder or other media pipeline writes stream outputs while viewers read them through a CDN. Google Cloud describes livestream buckets receiving writes from transcoders and reads from a CDN at the same time. Place storage and compute with both pipeline topology and audience geography in mind; the bucket’s region alone does not determine viewer latency.
Google Cloud recommends a lowest segment size of two seconds for livestreams, while cautioning that short segments are more sensitive to long-tail write latency. This is a provider guideline, not a universal streaming standard. Longer segments may be more suitable when viewers are far from the bucket, depending on the latency target and pipeline.

Validate seeking, byte ranges, and cache behavior
Seeking and partial object delivery depend on correct byte-range behavior between the origin and CDN. Test the actual response path rather than assuming that support for ordinary object downloads is sufficient.
- Where the CDN or player needs partial responses, verify that the origin returns
206 Partial Contentwith a correctContent-Rangeand object length. - Check validators such as ETag or Last-Modified if the selected CDN’s origin requirements or your cache-revalidation design depend on them.
- Test a seek near the start, middle, and end of a representative video, including a cold-cache request and a cached request.
- Confirm that the CDN’s range handling matches the origin’s behavior. Cloudflare documents that its origin range requests may be aligned differently from a client’s requested range.
Google Media CDN documents byte-range origin requirements and says objects larger than 1 MiB are fetched as byte-range requests of up to 2 MiB each. Those figures describe that service’s documented behavior, not a general requirement for all CDNs.

Make uploads resilient for large media
Large source files are vulnerable to interrupted transfers, so choose an upload method that suits file size and recovery needs. Cloudflare R2’s 2026 upload guidance describes a single PUT for smaller uploads—under approximately 100 MB—and recommends multipart upload for large files or when parallelism or resumability matters. Its guide gives a multipart object-size limit of up to 5 TiB. These are R2-specific figures and should not be applied to other object stores without checking their limits.
Multipart upload breaks a file into parts that can be transferred separately; implementations can retry failed parts rather than restarting the whole file. Confirm the provider’s completion and cleanup behavior for unfinished uploads, and validate the finished object before making it available for encoding or delivery.

Choose storage, CDN, and media processing together
There is no workload-independent winner among the provider combinations described here. Decide based on the existing cloud stack, who will encode and package media, where viewers and processing compute are located, and whether the CDN supports the range, cache, and access behavior the player needs.
| Approach | What it covers | What you still need to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Object storage plus CDN | Stores origin objects; the CDN caches and delivers them to viewers. AWS documents S3 with CloudFront for VOD. | Encoding and packaging workflow, player-compatible formats, origin access, cache policy, and range behavior. |
| Object storage with provider-adjacent caching | Cloudflare describes R2 tiered read caching and Cloudflare Cache for reads through a custom domain. | Cache configuration and freshness expectations; cached data may not immediately reflect a changed object. |
| Managed video service | Cloudflare positions Stream as handling video upload, encoding, and adaptive-bitrate delivery, while R2 is storage with caching for distribution. | Whether the integrated processing and delivery workflow fits your requirements and costs. These offerings are not equivalent to storage-plus-CDN components. |
Operational checks before launch
- Format and player compatibility: verify the exact manifests, codecs, and segment formats your target players accept.
- Origin access: ensure only the intended CDN, application, or authorized users can read private media; test denied as well as allowed requests.
- Geography: consider audience concentration, bucket location, and—on live workflows—the transcoding compute location.
- Cache freshness: decide how updates become visible. A cache can continue serving an older object after the origin object changes, depending on its configuration.
- Range behavior: validate partial responses and seeks through the selected CDN, not just against the storage endpoint.
- Live write/read overlap: test that the pipeline’s output becomes readable at the time and cadence expected by the CDN and player.
- Upload recovery: use the provider’s resumable or multipart path when file size or transfer reliability warrants it, and confirm how incomplete transfers are handled.
Common problems and fixes
The video downloads but does not adapt to bandwidth
A source file in a bucket is not automatically an adaptive stream. Encode and package it into supported renditions, segments, and manifests, then ensure the manifest references objects reachable through the CDN.

Seeking fails or returns the wrong part of a file
Inspect the origin and CDN responses for status, Content-Range, total object length, and validator behavior. Test the CDN’s range handling, since it may request ranges differently from the client.
Viewers receive an older version after an update
Check CDN cache rules and object versioning or naming. Cached data may not immediately reflect an overwritten object; use an update strategy that matches the cache policy, such as distinct object names for changed media.
Live playback falls behind or has gaps
Examine segment write latency and the time at which outputs become readable from the origin. Very short segments are more sensitive to long-tail write latency; adjust segment duration and placement based on the pipeline and audience distance.
A large upload fails partway through
Use the storage provider’s multipart or resumable upload method where available, and configure retries for failed parts. Verify provider-specific size limits and ensure the upload is completed before downstream processing begins.
