For a private S3 object, generate a presigned HTTPS URL for authorized access. This is a file-to-live-stream workflow—not a direct S3-to-YouTube connection or a camera stream.
What you need before you start
- An S3 object containing the video you intend to stream.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can reach both S3 and YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
- A YouTube live stream configured in Live Control Room, with its current RTMPS URL and stream key.
- For a private S3 object, a presigned URL that authorizes a GET request.
YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and directs creators to retrieve the ingest URL in Live Control Room: YouTube Help: Stream using RTMPS. Keep the stream key private. The presigned URL is also a credential: anyone who obtains it can use its authorized access until it expires.
Choose how FFmpeg will access the S3 video

How do I stream an S3 video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg?

Prepare the YouTube destination
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the RTMPS URL and stream key shown for that scheduled or current stream. Use the values displayed there rather than an endpoint copied from an old tutorial; endpoint details are stream-specific. YouTube’s developer documentation identifies RTMPS ingestion on port 443: YouTube Data API: Ingestion protocols.

Make the S3 object readable to FFmpeg
For a private object, create a presigned URL with permission to retrieve the object and copy the complete HTTPS URL exactly as generated. AWS presigned URLs use the permissions of the principal that created them and provide time-limited access: AWS: Using presigned URLs. If you use a public URL instead, first confirm that public retrieval is intentional and allowed by the bucket and object access configuration.

Set credentials without exposing them
Set environment variables in the shell that will run FFmpeg. Replace the placeholders with the complete presigned URL, the RTMPS base URL from YouTube, and the stream key. Do not paste real values into a public script, screenshots, source control, or logs.

Run FFmpeg at real-time speed
Use this command shape as a starting point, not as a universal YouTube encoding preset:

Check the incoming stream before going public
Watch the status and preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that video and audio are present and that the stream is healthy before starting or publicizing the broadcast. Sending packets to an ingest endpoint does not itself create or schedule a YouTube event.
Set encoding values for the source and destination
The example specifies H.264 video, yuv420p pixel format, AAC audio and FLV output, but it does not set an explicit resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate or keyframe interval. Choose those to fit the source and YouTube’s current encoder recommendations; do not treat a generic command as a verified preset. Check YouTube’s live streaming guidance for current settings: YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Before adding output constraints, inspect the source file so the video and audio you send are compatible with your intended stream. If you choose to set output resolution, frame rate, bitrate or keyframe behavior explicitly, use values supported by the source and the current YouTube guidance. Exact values depend on the desired output; no single bitrate or resolution is established for every S3 video and YouTube stream.
Can FFmpeg read an S3 presigned URL?
Yes. FFmpeg accepts a URL as an input, so it can read a reachable presigned HTTPS URL as the source. The URL must remain intact, including its query string; quoting it as in the command prevents shell characters from being misinterpreted. AWS evaluates the presigned URL’s expiry when a request is made. A download already in progress can finish after the expiry time, but a reconnect or new request after expiry fails. Generate a URL with enough validity for the stream and any planned restart, and be ready to create a fresh one.

How do I use RTMPS with FFmpeg?
Use the RTMPS URL and stream key shown for the selected stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then pass the combined destination to FFmpeg as the output URL. YouTube’s API documentation describes RTMPS ingestion and its use of port 443; the exact address and key are specific to the stream. If you cannot connect, re-copy both values from the current Live Control Room configuration rather than relying on a sample endpoint.
Looping a video and keeping the process running
FFmpeg has stream-loop options for repeating a source, but looping a file does not create a scheduled YouTube event or guarantee a seamless transition between repetitions. Test the loop and verify the resulting feed in Live Control Room before relying on it for a public broadcast.
The FFmpeg process must remain running, with network access to both S3 and YouTube. A local process stops if the computer sleeps, loses connectivity or exits. A persistent server or cloud host can avoid dependence on a home computer, but you remain responsible for runtime, monitoring, network access and operating cost. This is an architecture trade-off; there is no general cost or performance figure that applies to every host and stream.
Troubleshooting

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
FFmpeg changes how a file is delivered; it does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. Use videos you own or are licensed to stream, and check that any music, footage and other included material is cleared for the intended use. Review YouTube’s rules and channel policies before scheduling a stream, particularly if you plan to repeat prerecorded content. A technically successful broadcast does not guarantee that content complies with YouTube’s copyright or monetization policies.
