Run one FFmpeg process per YouTube channel, with a separate playlist and that channel’s own YouTube Live server URL and stream key. Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer for compatible files and an external scheduler set to the Asia/Kolkata timezone for launch times in IST. FFmpeg can loop a playlist, but it does not schedule a YouTube event for a particular wall-clock time.
What you need for each channel
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and a live event created or scheduled in YouTube Studio.
- The event’s ingest server URL and stream key, kept private and paired only with that channel’s FFmpeg process. YouTube explains that these are entered into the encoder in its encoder setup guide.
- A playlist text file listing the media files for that channel.
- An FFmpeg build with the protocols and encoders you plan to use. Check the installed build with
ffmpeg -version. - A host with enough encoding capacity and upload bandwidth for all processes running at the same time.
Set up each channel independently: the playlist, destination URL, key, and scheduled launch may differ. Do not put a real stream key in a public script, tutorial, command transcript, or log. YouTube’s live stream settings help describes managing stream settings and resetting a compromised key.
Prepare a playlist for FFmpeg
For the concat demuxer, make a text file with one file entry per media file. For example, a file named channel-a.txt could contain:
file '/media/channel-a/episode-01.mp4'
file '/media/channel-a/episode-02.mp4'This is illustrative syntax, not a tested production playlist. Check that paths exist and that quoting is correct for your operating system and filenames. Keep a separate list for each channel so the content routed to one channel cannot be confused with another’s.

Check whether the files are compatible
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer expects the listed files to have the same streams, codecs, and time base; its documentation states, “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” See the FFmpeg documentation. If playlist items differ in stream layout or encoding, first normalize them to common properties, or use the concat filter when re-encoding is appropriate. The concat filter is not a way to avoid format compatibility work; see the FFmpeg FAQ.
Start one FFmpeg process per YouTube channel
For each channel, point a separate FFmpeg process at its playlist and that channel’s ingest endpoint. The following is a schematic example only:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i channel-a.txt
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$CHANNEL_A_INGEST_URL"-re reads the input at its media rate, while -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping. The example selects H.264 video and AAC audio, but it is not a one-size-fits-all command: choose output settings for your source files, machine, and YouTube’s current ingest guidance. The endpoint variable must resolve to the appropriate YouTube server URL and stream key in the format required by the selected protocol. Do not expose credentials through shell history or logs; use a protected secrets mechanism where available.

-safe 0 relaxes concat demuxer path safety checks. Do not add it by default: use it only when necessary for your paths and only with playlist files you trust. Verify your FFmpeg build supports the chosen protocol and encoders. The command has not been tested as a production configuration; option behavior and component availability can vary by build.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube’s encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, AAC or MP3, constant bitrate (CBR), and support up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds; it also recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Set resolution, frame rate, video and audio bitrate, and GOP/keyframe interval explicitly where needed for your encoder and target stream. Confirm that your chosen ingest URL, codec settings, and FFmpeg build work together, then validate them in Live Control Room.
Schedule launch times in IST
Playlist looping and clock-based scheduling are separate tasks. FFmpeg reads and sends media; it does not interpret an “IST” label as a schedule for starting a YouTube event. Use an external scheduler that accepts an explicit timezone and configure it as Asia/Kolkata. Create separate jobs or process definitions for channels with different playlists or start times, and confirm both the host clock and the scheduler’s timezone configuration.

The FFmpeg and YouTube documentation cited here does not define native IST scheduling for playlist rotation. Verify how your particular scheduler handles timezone-aware start times and daylight-saving or timezone rules before relying on it; do not assume an abbreviation alone is sufficient.
Plan for concurrent bandwidth and encoding load
Estimate upload demand by adding the target bitrates of all simultaneous outputs, including audio, then allow headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth beyond stream bitrate needs in its streaming tips. A single host also needs enough CPU or GPU capacity for every process that transcodes. Stream copying can reduce encoding work when source streams are suitable, but it does not make incompatible files or unsuitable output formats compatible. The right capacity depends on the actual codecs, resolution, frame rate, number of processes, and hardware; there is no universal safe channel count.

Test and monitor the live events
- Start each FFmpeg process against its matching event and channel credentials.
- Open that channel’s YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the preview appears with the expected picture and audio.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and any encoder messages before relying on the scheduled start.
- During operation, monitor every process and each event’s status; a launched process is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview and stream health, and starting the encoder ahead of the event. Its streaming tips advise setup well in advance. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; confirm current behavior for the specific channel and event in the guide.
Troubleshooting common failures
FFmpeg concat fails or stops at a file boundary
Check that every playlist path is correct and that files have compatible stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. If they do not, normalize the inputs or use a filter-based concat pipeline with re-encoding as needed. Review the concat demuxer requirements in the FFmpeg documentation and the FAQ.
YouTube receives no video or rejects the stream
Verify that the process uses the server URL and key for the intended channel and event, that the key has not been reset, and that the selected protocol and codecs are supported by your FFmpeg build. Compare output settings with YouTube’s encoder specifications, then inspect Live Control Room’s preview and status messages.

The stream starts late or at the wrong time
Check the scheduler’s configured timezone is Asia/Kolkata, confirm the host clock, and ensure the job targets the correct channel process. FFmpeg’s loop option does not control start time.
One or more streams buffer or become unstable
Compare the combined output bitrate with available upload bandwidth, retaining YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check whether simultaneous transcodes are saturating CPU or GPU resources; test the actual workload rather than assuming a host can handle a particular number of channels.
