Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Make the countdown a short video segment, put it immediately before each story, then join the segments. Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with -c copy only when the files have compatible streams and parameters; if you need to add text, normalize media, or combine mismatched inputs, use filters and re-encode.
Choose what your countdown should contain
A countdown can be on-screen numbers, spoken or musical audio, or both. FFmpeg does not prescribe a children’s-story countdown length or sound design, so choose a duration that fits your programme and make the segment before assembling the story. For a reusable workflow, prepare one countdown clip and place it before every story; to vary the visuals or words, make a separate clip for each story.
- On-screen numbers: render text over a background video.
- Spoken or musical countdown: prepare an audio segment and insert it before the story audio.
- Both: make a countdown clip with picture and audio, or deliberately use silence or an audio bed beneath the numbers.
Check your FFmpeg build and source files
Confirm that drawtext is available
To render numbers, check whether your FFmpeg build includes the drawtext filter. Its availability depends on the libraries used to build FFmpeg. Check the local build’s filter list, for example with ffmpeg -filters, and consult documentation matching your installed version. The online FFmpeg documentation tracks the newest revision, so its options may differ from an older local build: FFmpeg documentation.
Inspect the media before choosing a join method
Determine whether each input has video, audio, or both, and compare resolution, frame rate, codecs, time bases, and audio layouts. The concat demuxer expects corresponding streams with compatible codecs and time bases; it is not a guarantee that arbitrary MP4 files can be joined by copying. If parameters differ, plan to normalize and re-encode instead. See the concat demuxer documentation.

Make a countdown clip with centered text
This command creates a one-second black video with a centered “3”. It is a single title frame, not a complete changing countdown:
ffmpeg -f lavfi -i color=c=black:s=1280x720:d=1
-vf "drawtext=text='3':fontcolor=white:fontsize=120:x=(w-text_w)/2:y=(h-text_h)/2"
-t 1 countdown-frame.mp4
The drawtext filter can place text using expressions based on frame and text dimensions. For a timed sequence such as 3, 2, 1, either use a time-based text expression or render three short segments and join them in order. Validate the expression, filter options, font availability, and shell quoting on your installed build; FFmpeg filtergraphs can require escaping. The official drawtext documentation describes text rendering and its build requirements.

Put the countdown before one story
Use the concat demuxer when stream copy is suitable
If the countdown and story have compatible corresponding streams, codecs, time bases, and parameters, make a list in the required order. The first line below must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 for automatic format recognition; do not add a byte-order mark or leading characters.
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'countdown.mp4'
file 'story.mp4'
Save it as story-list.ffconcat, then run:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i story-list.ffconcat -c copy story-with-countdown.mp4
-c copy avoids re-encoding, but only works reliably when the inputs meet the demuxer’s compatibility requirements. Paths with spaces or special characters must be escaped according to the concat file syntax. Declared durations or segment lengths that do not match the actual media can shift timestamps, causing gaps or artifacts. Review the official demuxer requirements and timestamp notes before relying on this route.

Use the concat filter when filtering or re-encoding is needed
If the inputs need filters, overlays, normalization, or re-encoding, build a filter graph that provides corresponding video and audio streams for the segments, then concatenate those streams and encode the result. FFmpeg’s FAQ says of this approach: “This operation is recommended if you need to re-encode.” See FFmpeg FAQ: concat. Multi-input processing uses -filter_complex; -vf and -af are per-stream video and audio filter aliases, respectively. The exact graph depends on the inputs, especially whether each segment has video, audio, or both, so inspect the files rather than assuming one command fits every story. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Repeat the workflow for a collection of stories
- Prepare the countdown clip and verify its picture and audio.
- For each story, create a separate concat list with the countdown first and that story second.
- Use the demuxer and stream copy only for compatible inputs; otherwise normalize/filter and concatenate with re-encoding.
- Write each result to a distinct output filename so one story does not overwrite another.
- Preview a representative output and check the transition point before processing the whole collection.
Batch-script syntax depends on your operating system and filenames; the list-and-command pattern above is the portable core, not a complete OS-specific batch script.

Check audio-only and mixed-media cases
For a spoken or musical countdown, insert its audio segment before the story’s audio. If the story has video, ensure the output also has a continuous, correctly aligned video stream. Decide whether the countdown should sit over silence or an audio bed; check for abrupt cuts, clipped speech, unexpected gaps, or repeated sound at the boundary. FFmpeg includes audio delay, fade, and crossfade filters, but there is no universal children’s-story loudness target or transition duration established here. Choose and listen to the result for the intended programme.
Troubleshoot common failures
- “No such filter: drawtext” or a related filter error: the installed build may lack the required filter or libraries. Check
ffmpeg -filtersand use documentation for that build. - Concat errors or an output with missing streams: compare the inputs’ stream types and parameters. A countdown with video and audio cannot be assumed to match a story containing only one of those streams; use a filter graph that creates corresponding streams.
- Gaps, timestamp jumps, or artifacts at the join: verify stream compatibility and whether declared segment durations match actual lengths. Re-encode through a concat filter if direct demuxing is unsuitable.
- Text is missing, misplaced, or different than expected: confirm font availability, filter syntax, expression quoting, and shell escaping; test a short output before processing the full set.
- Audio cuts off or starts unexpectedly: preview the boundary, inspect stream alignment, and adjust the audio segment or filtering intentionally.
