A process supervisor can relaunch OBS after it exits, but that does not guarantee recovery: OBS may remain open behind a crash dialog, and YouTube’s auto-start setting does not restart OBS. For a children’s stream, rehearse both the OBS recovery and YouTube’s broadcast recovery before relying on them live.
What automatic restart can—and cannot—do
There are two separate systems to recover. OBS must run again and send audio and video; YouTube must receive that feed and show the broadcast in the expected state. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options control whether the encoder can start or stop a broadcast. They do not relaunch the OBS application after a crash. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
A supervisor that watches for OBS to exit may relaunch it after a clean process exit. However, OBS community reports describe crashes that leave the application open at a dialog awaiting user interaction. In that situation, a watcher looking only for process exit may see nothing to restart. This is a reported failure mode, not a guarantee about every OBS version or operating system; test your actual setup. OBS community discussion.
Prepare OBS and YouTube before the stream
- Protect the stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key out of screenshots, public logs, and scripts. If it is exposed, regenerate it in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Confirm the encoder connection. Configure OBS with the YouTube server URL and stream key. Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview; check that the intended audio and video are arriving before starting the broadcast. See YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.
- Choose an appropriate test broadcast. Rehearse with an unlisted or otherwise suitable test stream rather than discovering recovery problems during the intended children’s program. Check the stream preview and health indicators as you test.
- Record what should return after restart. Know which OBS scene and profile are intended, and how to verify the correct program, audio, and video after relaunch. Do not assume that a process restart by itself proves the right content is on air.
Test an OBS restart supervisor safely
An external process supervisor can be part of a recovery plan, but the exact supported setup depends on the operating system, OBS version, and supervisor. The available official YouTube instructions do not establish a built-in OBS crash-restart feature or a supported method for suppressing crash dialogs. Community reports are not sufficient to treat a particular command, plug-in, script, or dialog workaround as universally supported. Confirm any implementation against documentation for your own versions and test it before an event.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Test a clean exit. In a test broadcast, close OBS normally and verify that the supervisor detects the exit and launches OBS as intended.
- Test a real crash path. Rehearse the crash or failure mode you are concerned about. Check whether OBS exits or remains open with a dialog, and whether the supervisor actually recovers it. Do not rely on a clean-exit test alone.
- Verify the feed after relaunch. Confirm the intended OBS scene and profile, visible video, audible program sound, and incoming stream in Live Control Room. Check the broadcast state instead of assuming YouTube resumed automatically.
- Rehearse the whole sequence. Measure the practical interruption and decide who will monitor the stream and what they should do if OBS does not recover. Do not leave a child-oriented program unattended on the assumption that automation has been proven by one successful launch.
Use a backup encoder for a separate continuity layer
A backup encoder is different from restarting OBS: it provides another encoder feed if the primary one fails; it does not repair the crashed OBS instance. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover in advance, including stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, and checking that the player rolls over to the backup. Monitor audio and video quality during the event. See YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.
- Set up the backup encoder and confirm it is ready for the same broadcast according to YouTube’s current Live Control Room procedure.
- During a test, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, following YouTube’s recommendation for testing failover.
- Watch the YouTube player and Live Control Room to verify the player rolls over and the backup feed is usable.
- Restore the primary path and rehearse the return or handoff procedure your event will use.
Troubleshoot recovery failures
| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS crashed, but the supervisor did not relaunch it | OBS may still be running behind a crash dialog, or the supervisor may not be monitoring the relevant process state. | Reproduce the failure outside the live event. Check whether OBS exited or is waiting for interaction, then validate the supervisor against that exact case. |
| OBS relaunched, but YouTube has no incoming video | The application launch alone does not confirm that the encoder feed is connected. | Check the OBS scene and profile, network connection, stream key, and Live Control Room preview. Follow YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting steps if the connection will not start: YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder. |
| The preview returns, but the broadcast is not live as expected | The encoder connection and the broadcast state are separate checks; auto-start settings are not an OBS restart mechanism. | Inspect the Live Control Room broadcast state and use the appropriate YouTube control rather than assuming relaunch started the broadcast. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Anyone with the key may be able to send an encoder feed to that destination. | Regenerate the key in Live Control Room and replace the key configured in OBS. Do not paste it into public support posts or logs. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings. |
| The backup encoder does not take over cleanly | Failover may not be configured or behaving as expected, or the backup feed may not be ready. | Repeat YouTube’s recommended test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, and verify the player rollover before the real stream. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded children’s program looping on YouTube, rather than a live camera or an OBS production, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams uploaded files—not a live camera—and YouTube is its destination.
