Docker can restart FFmpeg after some process exits; it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast if the host, source file, network, credentials, or YouTube ingest fails.
This guide walks through the complete setup, from YouTube’s stream key to container monitoring, and explains what to test before relying on it for a long-running broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A host that can run Docker Engine and remain powered on, such as a suitable local machine or hosted server.
- A known-good video file in a directory on that host.
- An FFmpeg image whose build includes the encoders and protocols you plan to use.
- A YouTube channel with access to Live Control Room and a stream configured there.
- Enough measured, sustained upload capacity for the selected video and audio settings, with practical headroom.
There is no universal CPU, GPU, or bandwidth requirement: the needed capacity depends on the input, whether FFmpeg must encode or can copy streams, the chosen output settings, and the host’s actual network path to YouTube. Compare a local machine and a hosted runtime on Docker support, sustained compute capacity, outbound bandwidth and transfer limits, recovery controls, network path, and cost. No specific hosting provider is established here as a tested recommendation.
Create a YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to broadcast.
- Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current values and protocol shown in Control Room rather than assuming a fixed URL format.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in a public repository, a shared command transcript, or a configuration file with broad access.
- If the key is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room. Update the container’s protected configuration with the replacement key.
YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance explains stream keys and URLs, as well as key management: Manage live stream settings.

Choose output settings that fit YouTube and your connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the feed in transit to Google’s servers. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current official table for the combination you select.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, a GOP of 60 frames is two seconds.
- Bitrate: As one concrete reference, YouTube Help’s English encoder-settings table accessed October 3, 2026 lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps using H.264. These are recommendations, not a guarantee of stability. Measure upstream bandwidth and leave headroom.
- Resolution and frame rate: Higher settings need more encoding capacity and usually more bandwidth. Choose a combination your host can encode and your connection can sustain.
- Audio: Select a supported audio codec and bitrate appropriate to the content; check that the source’s audio is present and synchronized.
See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance for its current tables and requirements: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Settings can change, so verify them when configuring a new stream.
Prepare the media directory on the host
Keep the source file on the host and mount its directory read-only into the container. For example, this mount maps /srv/youtube-media on the host to /media in the container:
--mount type=bind,src=/srv/youtube-media,dst=/media,readonly
A read-only bind mount is a straightforward fit for static input media: FFmpeg can read the file, while the container cannot modify the host copy through that mount. Docker volumes persist outside a container’s writable layer, but a bind mount is often easier to understand when the media already lives in a known host directory. See Docker’s volume documentation.

Build and test the FFmpeg command
First test FFmpeg directly in an environment with access to the mounted media and protected credentials. This illustrative command loops a file, paces it in real time, encodes 30 fps H.264 video and AAC audio, and sends an FLV stream to the supplied output URL:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /media/loop.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-g 60 -r 30 -c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This is an example, not a universal or tested preset. It assumes a 30 fps H.264/AAC output and uses a 4,500 kbps video target; choose bitrate, resolution, codec, and frame rate using YouTube’s current guidance and the host’s measured upload capacity. The two-second GOP in the example follows from 60 frames at 30 fps. Replace the output format and URL construction as needed to match the ingest protocol and URL shown in your current Live Control Room.
-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely.-rereads the file at real-time speed instead of sending it as fast as possible.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP in this example.-f flvselects the output container used in this illustrative RTMP-style command.
Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build includes the requested encoder. FFmpeg’s online command-line documentation is regenerated for the newest revision, so check the local build and ffmpeg -h output if an option behaves differently. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation and protocol documentation.
Do not put a real stream key in shell history or a public command. In Compose or another container deployment, inject it using a protected environment or secret mechanism and limit access to the configuration. Environment variables may still be visible to privileged host administrators.

Run FFmpeg as the container’s main process
The image needs FFmpeg and an entrypoint that runs the streaming command as its main process. If a shell script is used, it should use exec ffmpeg ... so FFmpeg replaces the shell and its exit status reaches Docker. A representative launch shape is:
docker run -d --name youtube-ffmpeg
--restart unless-stopped
--mount type=bind,src=/srv/youtube-media,dst=/media,readonly
--env-file /etc/youtube-stream/stream.env
your-ffmpeg-image:tag
This assumes you have already built or obtained an appropriate image and defined its command or entrypoint. The example environment file should contain the required values, be kept private, and have restricted file permissions. Docker’s unless-stopped policy restarts the container after it exits and after daemon restarts, unless an operator deliberately stopped it. always has different behavior after a manual stop and daemon restart; choose deliberately. Docker recommends restart policies for ordinary container restart behavior rather than adding a separate host process manager.
Restart-policy activation occurs only after the container has been up successfully for at least 10 seconds. For details, see Docker’s automatic-start documentation and container run reference.
Check status, logs, and recovery
Use these commands to inspect the running container, follow its output, and check how often Docker has restarted it:

docker ps
docker logs -f youtube-ffmpeg
docker inspect -f '{{.RestartCount}}' youtube-ffmpeg
A restart policy responds to container exits; it does not make the full broadcast highly available. It cannot fix an invalid stream key, a bad command, an unreadable or ended source, exhausted host resources, a host outage, or a failed network. Nor does it guarantee YouTube will accept a new ingest after a disconnect. Docker’s live-restore documentation describes daemon behavior, not protection from host or network failures.
FFmpeg protocol reconnect options documented for HTTP inputs, such as reconnect_at_eof and reconnect_streamed, are not a general RTMP output recovery switch. If you add a wrapper or retry loop for output failures, design it to avoid a rapid busy loop and monitor its behavior. Docker restarting FFmpeg after it exits is a simpler baseline, not an end-to-end recovery guarantee.
Test the complete stream before relying on it
- Start with the intended source and settings, and confirm the stream appears in Live Control Room.
- Check stream health messages, picture quality, audio presence, and audio/video synchronization.
- Confirm the actual output bitrate fits measured upstream capacity, including headroom for normal variation.
- Test the failure cases that matter: let a source reach its end, interrupt the network, and manually stop the container. Observe what Docker and YouTube each do before making assumptions about recovery.
- Keep monitoring the host, container logs, and YouTube stream health during the broadcast.
YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and movement similar to the real program, rather than treating a successful idle connection as proof the full production will work. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit and content rules
YouTube Help’s encoder setup guidance accessed October 3, 2026 says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a broadcast that exceeds that stated duration; plan a separate recording or archive workflow if you need a copy.

A Docker loop does not change YouTube’s content policies. Use media you own or are licensed to stream, and check YouTube’s copyright and monetization requirements before broadcasting prerecorded material repeatedly. Reused-content review and copyright enforcement are distinct issues: having permission to use material does not by itself establish that a channel meets monetization requirements. Consult YouTube’s current policies for the channel and content at issue; this setup guide cannot determine whether a particular recording is cleared or eligible.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded prerecorded video looping on a YouTube channel without keeping a home computer online, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs the loop from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
