You can run a YouTube encoder as a Docker Compose service on an OVHcloud VPS, but Compose manages containers—it does not supply the encoder, media source, or guaranteed uptime. Choose a supported encoder image and workflow first, size the VPS for either relaying or transcoding, then configure YouTube ingest, persistent operation, and end-to-end monitoring.

What this setup does—and what it does not

A single VPS can run a containerized process that sends video to YouTube Live. Docker Compose describes and operates services on that server; Docker’s production guidance calls a single-server deployment a straightforward way to run an application. It is not high availability: a VPS outage or network failure can still interrupt the stream. Docker’s production guidance and the Compose application model explain the roles Compose can play.

The exact image, encoder command, media source, and OVHcloud VPS size depend on your chosen workflow. Treat configuration below as a deployment outline, not a tested, copy-and-paste Compose file. Follow the selected image’s documentation for its variables, volumes, ports, health checks, and secret handling.

Choose relay or transcoding before choosing a VPS

Relay or passthrough

A relay forwards an already encoded feed without re-encoding it. It generally avoids the CPU load of software video encoding, but still requires a sustained network connection capable of carrying the feed. Verify that the chosen software supports your input and YouTube’s ingest protocol.

Transcoding

Transcoding decodes and re-encodes video, for example to change resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. Its CPU and memory demands depend on the source, output settings, codec, and encoder. Do not assume a VPS plan is adequate based on the word “streaming” alone.

OVHcloud describes its VPS products as virtual machines with root access, but the cited VPS landing page does not establish a plan suitable for a particular encoding workload or provide a recommendation for this use case. Check current plan specifications and test your actual workload before committing to a 24/7 stream. See the OVHcloud VPS guide.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Enable live streaming on your channel. YouTube says initial activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete this ahead of your planned launch. Check the channel’s current eligibility and any restrictions in YouTube Studio.
  2. Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the ingest server URL and stream key into the encoder’s configuration. YouTube’s encoder guide describes this workflow.
  3. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Select the matching URL and settings supported by the encoder; do not assume every image supports the same protocol or configuration. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings.
  4. Keep the key out of source control. Treat it like a password. Do not place it in a public Compose file, commit it to a repository, or paste it into public logs. Compose supports secrets mounted as files, but the appropriate mechanism depends on how and where you deploy; confirm that the selected image can read the secret in that form.

Build a Compose deployment around the chosen encoder

Install the runtime and verify the image

Start with an OVHcloud VPS running an operating system supported by your chosen encoder image. Install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin using current instructions from the relevant vendors. Check the image’s maintenance status, supported architectures, configuration format, and method for consuming media before exposing it to a long-running workload.

Separate ordinary and production settings

Keep a base compose.yaml for the service definition and use a production override when it helps distinguish deployment settings. Configure only the ports the encoder actually needs, and bind them narrowly where possible. Use persistent volumes for data that must survive container replacement—such as required state or media—rather than assuming a container’s writable layer is durable.

Choose a restart policy to match how you operate the service. A policy such as unless-stopped can restart a container after an unexpected exit while respecting an intentional stop. It does not diagnose the reason for an exit, restore a failed VPS, or prove that YouTube is receiving healthy video. Docker’s production guide covers production-specific Compose choices.

Handle dependencies and readiness deliberately

If the encoder depends on another service, remember that Compose normally waits for a dependency container to be running, not necessarily ready. Add a health check and a service_healthy dependency condition only when the image offers a meaningful readiness signal. Do not copy a health check written for a different image: a check that reports “healthy” while the media source or encoder is unusable gives false confidence. See Compose startup order.

Start, inspect, and deploy updates

  1. From the directory containing the Compose file, start the configured service in the background with docker compose up -d.
  2. Check container state with docker compose ps, then inspect encoder output with docker compose logs. A running container is not proof of a successful YouTube ingest.
  3. Check the stream preview and health in YouTube Live Control Room, then view the playback as a viewer. Confirm the intended picture, sound, and continuity before relying on it.
  4. For a changed image or configuration, follow Docker’s production deployment guidance to rebuild or recreate the affected service safely. Watch logs and YouTube stream health during the update.

Set quality to fit the sustained connection

Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate according to the content, encoder capability, and measured VPS network capacity. A higher output setting is not useful if the VPS cannot sustain the required upload or the encoder cannot produce it reliably. YouTube’s encoder settings give the platform’s current guidance for supported settings; match those recommendations to the options actually exposed by your encoder.

YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate and advises testing and monitoring. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular VPS connection will stay healthy. For a primary and backup feed that transmit at the same time, include both in the bandwidth calculation. Its streaming tips explain the headroom and monitoring guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Measure sustained upload under representative conditions, not just a brief peak.
  • Leave the recommended 20% margin above the combined bitrate you expect to send.
  • Test the actual stream settings and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators before treating the setup as production-ready.
  • Reassess after changing resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, or the number of simultaneously transmitting feeds.

What “24/7” reliability requires

Monitor several layers: whether the container is running, whether the encoder is producing output, whether YouTube Live Control Room reports a healthy ingest, and whether viewer-facing playback works. A process can remain alive while the stream is frozen, misconfigured, or no longer reaching YouTube.

A restart policy can help after some process exits, but it cannot fix a bad stream key, insufficient CPU, full disk, network outage, VPS maintenance, or a channel restriction. Compose on one VPS also does not provide failover if that server itself fails. Plan how you will receive alerts and investigate the service; do not equate automatic restart with uninterrupted broadcast.

Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?

YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a continuous 24-hour broadcast will be saved as one complete replay. If a replay matters, verify YouTube’s current behavior before the broadcast and plan separate recordings or shorter sessions if needed. See the YouTube encoder guide.

Copyright, reused content, and channel rules

A successful technical connection does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material in your stream, and it does not guarantee eligibility for monetization. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current copyright, live-streaming, and monetization policies for your channel and content. Repeating a file continuously does not make copyrighted material safe to use or ensure that a channel meets YouTube’s reused-content requirements.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely checks and corrective action
Container exits or repeatedly restarts Inspect docker compose logs for configuration, file access, or encoder errors. Verify the image’s required variables and mounted paths. A restart policy may repeat the failure without fixing its cause.
Encoder runs, but YouTube does not receive the stream Confirm live streaming is enabled, the stream URL and key are current and correctly entered, and the encoder is using a compatible ingest protocol. Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health details.
Video stutters, drops, or reports poor health Check measured sustained upload against the total feed bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. For transcoding, also check CPU capacity and encoder output. Reduce the workload or settings if the VPS cannot sustain them.
Stream stops after a server or network event Check VPS and network availability, then inspect the container and encoder logs. Restart settings may recover a stopped process, but a single VPS has no automatic protection against its own outage.
A service reports healthy but the stream is broken Revisit what the health check actually tests. Add end-to-end checks of encoder output, YouTube stream health, and viewer playback rather than relying on container state alone.
No complete replay appears Check the duration and YouTube’s current archive behavior. The stated automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed single archive for a 24-hour broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded video playing without maintaining a VPS and Compose stack, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos and playlists. Upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers; your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.

Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same features apply to every plan; only the billing length changes. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
