YouTube supports live streaming from a computer using an encoder, but it does not publish a universal minimum laptop specification or guarantee that a particular machine will run continuously. Test your actual laptop, encoder, connection and power setup before relying on it.
For cartoons, settle the rights question before you configure the stream: being able to watch a cartoon online does not mean you may rebroadcast it. YouTube requires streamers to have the necessary rights to the live content, including applicable music rights.
Before setting up the laptop
Check that the channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days. Check that the channel is eligible before spending time configuring an encoder. YouTube’s Get started with live streaming and Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming help pages explain the platform requirements.
Confirm the rights to every part of the stream
Make sure you have the necessary rights for each cartoon, soundtrack, song, clip, and other element you intend to broadcast. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions say content providers must have the rights needed to use live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. The answer for a particular cartoon depends on the work, the applicable territory, the licence and the intended use; do not assume that a cartoon is free to rebroadcast because it is publicly viewable.

Know the difference between permission and monetization eligibility
Copyright permission and YouTube monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. Its policy, updated July 15, 2025, says repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible as inauthentic content, and reused content needs significant original commentary, substantive modification, or added educational or entertainment value. Permission from a rights holder does not by itself establish that a stream meets monetization rules.
Set up the old laptop as an encoder
YouTube supports a computer-and-encoder workflow. Exact menus and encoder controls can vary, so use YouTube Studio and the encoder’s current instructions rather than relying on settings meant for another computer. YouTube does not specify a minimum laptop processor, memory, upload speed, or universal settings for a 24/7 stream.

- Prepare the machine. Use the laptop you already own and make sure it can remain powered and connected for a monitored test. Close unrelated work so the test reflects the streaming workload. Keep the laptop where you can observe it while testing; whether its condition and local environment are suitable cannot be determined without trying that specific setup.
- Choose the exact video and audio. Build the cartoon playlist or select the recording you have rights to stream. Check that the audio is present and that the video plays as intended before sending it to YouTube.
- Open YouTube Studio and create the live stream. Use YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup for a computer encoder. Configure the broadcast, then retrieve its stream key and enter that key in the encoder. Treat the key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the associated stream.
- Configure the encoder for the laptop you are testing. Choose a video quality the machine can encode without persistent overload, then check the encoder’s preview and status indicators. There is no research-backed universal bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval for an unspecified old laptop; do not copy a preset on the assumption it will work on your device.
- Start with a short, watched test. Start the encoder and check the YouTube preview. Watch and listen for picture or audio problems, and observe whether the encoder reports overload, loses its connection, or the laptop becomes unstable. A successful short test is useful evidence, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation for a day or longer.
- Run a longer monitored trial before leaving it unattended. Use the same playlist, encoder settings, network and power arrangement you plan to use. Note when any interruption occurs and whether it appears to come from encoding, the connection, or the laptop. Change one factor at a time and test again; the correct fix depends on the symptom and machine.
- Choose the audience setting accurately. Set the audience designation to match the content. When a stream is set as made for kids, YouTube disables features including live chat and personalized ads; contextual ads may still be shown. Plan stream length and keep an archive backup
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If keeping a replay matters, consider ending the broadcast before it reaches that duration and starting another session, or keep a local recording as a backup. YouTube recommends a local recording when the archive matters. See its Archive live streams guidance for the qualification on streams over 12 hours.
A long-running stream also depends on the specific laptop, encoder, internet connection and local power conditions. YouTube does not publish a universal upload-speed, temperature, electricity-cost or laptop-specification threshold for this use. Check your own connection and observe the actual machine rather than treating a generic figure as a guarantee.

Troubleshoot a test stream
- The stream does not start: Check that the channel is currently eligible to go live, that the broadcast is configured in YouTube Studio, and that the encoder is using the stream key for that broadcast.
- YouTube has no usable preview: Confirm the encoder is sending the intended video and audio, then inspect its preview and status. Do not assume a live indicator alone means the cartoon’s picture and sound are correct.
- The encoder reports overload or the laptop becomes unstable: Stop the test and retry with a less demanding quality choice in the encoder. No single setting can be prescribed without knowing the laptop and encoder; watch the new test rather than assuming the adjustment solved it.
- The feed disconnects: Check whether the encoder still shows an active feed and whether the laptop remains connected. Test the same setup again while watched; the cause could be the connection, encoder or machine, and the source guidance does not establish a universal fix.
- The replay is missing: Check the broadcast duration. YouTube may not capture a stream that exceeds 12 hours; use shorter sessions or retain a local recording if an archive is important.
- Monetization is unavailable or limited: Review both rights and YouTube’s monetization rules. A licence does not guarantee that reused or repetitive material qualifies for monetization.
