Yes—an old laptop can run a continuous devotional YouTube stream if it can sustain the video encoder, power and internet upload connection. Use OBS as the encoder, rehearse the complete setup at the intended location, and plan how someone will recover the stream after an outage. A 24/7 target is not a guarantee: the laptop, electricity, network or YouTube connection can fail.
Check YouTube live access before setting up
In YouTube Studio, confirm that the channel is eligible to stream live and follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions in Live Control Room. YouTube’s guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-stream restriction during the preceding 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance and live-streaming restrictions and eligibility.
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that prepares video for a live stream. It lists OBS among its software encoder options; OBS is open-source and available at no charge. Follow the stream details shown for your broadcast in Live Control Room rather than relying on an old tutorial’s screen labels or saved settings.
Clear rights to devotional video and audio
Use only recordings, performances, artwork, photographs and video that you own or have permission to broadcast. A devotional subject, traditional hymn or public-domain composition does not automatically make a particular modern recording or performance free to use.

YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, and a match can interrupt or end a broadcast. A license may not be enough if the rights owner requires your channel to be allowlisted through Content ID. Confirm the rights and any allowlisting requirements with the rights owner before going live. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Set up OBS on the laptop
- Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create or select the stream, and use the current connection instructions and stream details provided there.
- Connect OBS using the stream details. Enter the stream information in OBS as directed by YouTube’s encoder instructions. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on screen, publish it, or send it to anyone who does not need access. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Keep the scene simple. Start with a still devotional image or a low-motion loop and the required audio. Avoid unnecessary browser sources, animated effects and overlays; each source can add load to an older computer.
- Run OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard. Then test the actual resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene you intend to use. OBS notes that requirements depend on settings and scene complexity, and a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming adequately. Check the OBS system requirements and workload guidance.
There is no single resolution or bitrate that is safe to prescribe for every old laptop and internet connection. The appropriate settings depend on the machine’s encoder performance and the upload path at the broadcast location. If OBS shows sustained encoding strain or the test is unstable, reduce the workload and rehearse again rather than assuming a setting will work around the clock.

Test upload stability where the laptop will run
A speed-test result is a snapshot, not proof that your connection can sustain a live stream for a full day. Test from the room and network you plan to use, then run a sustained OBS rehearsal and watch its dropped-frame indicators. OBS explains that rising network-related dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
TRAI’s MySpeed service can measure your connection, but national telecom reports cannot establish the stable upload capacity of your particular ISP plan, router, building or mobile signal. Your own extended rehearsal at the intended site is the useful test. A wired connection is a prudent option when available, but no connection type is reliable in every location. Keep the machine powered and prepare for failures
- Run the laptop from its AC adapter, provide ventilation, and configure its operating system to avoid sleep or automatic shutdown during the broadcast.
- If brief power interruptions are a concern, consider a UPS sized for the laptop adapter and network equipment. Choose based on the devices’ load and the runtime you need; a UPS does not keep the stream online if the ISP or upstream network is down.
- Decide who can restart OBS or the laptop, restore the connection and verify the broadcast in Live Control Room. Rehearse the recovery steps for a power loss, restart, encoder crash and internet outage.
- Keep YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and OBS status available to the operator. Check that the stream remains live and that audio, stream health, frame drops and rights notices are as expected.
Choose an archive plan before broadcasting
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, either make a local recording—after testing the additional storage and encoding load—or schedule shorter sessions and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive. Troubleshoot common problems
