You can send a church’s continuous video feed from an India-region cloud VPS to YouTube Live by configuring an encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then keeping the encoder and its network connection running on the VPS. That does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: first test the exact workload, check the VPS region’s monthly data-transfer allowance and overage charges, and decide how you will monitor and recover the stream.
Before choosing a VPS, decide what the stream will do
An always-on church channel can mean a live camera or program feed, a loop of prerecorded material, or a static holding scene. These are different workloads. A camera or composed program generally has to be encoded somewhere; relaying an already-encoded feed puts a different load on the server. A prerecorded-video loop also needs a playback method. Choose the format and operating plan before selecting a VPS, because an advertised CPU count or network speed alone does not establish that a plan can run your particular encoder continuously.
Check channel access and content rights
YouTube’s current general live-stream guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before building the VPS workflow. YouTube’s encoder guidance is on its Live Control Room workflow; the exact controls shown can vary with the channel and interface.
Secure the necessary rights for every part of the service feed, including hymns, backing tracks, sermon clips and other third-party works. YouTube’s terms make the provider responsible for the rights needed to use live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, and an unresolved match can lead to interruption or termination. A church’s permission to perform or stream a work should not be assumed from its ownership of a recording or from the fact that the stream is religious.

Choose an India-region VPS based on sustained use and data transfer
Before buying a plan, compare the selected India region’s CPU, memory, storage, monthly transfer allowance, what traffic counts against it, and outbound overage terms. A VPS provider’s advertised connection speed is not the same as an allowance for transmitting data all month. The figures below are payload estimates calculated from bitrate and elapsed time; they are not measured provider usage and exclude protocol overhead and other server traffic.

Use the arithmetic GB per day ≈ Mbps × 10.8 and GB per 30-day month ≈ Mbps × 324 for a first estimate. AWS’s current Lightsail data-transfer documentation says Mumbai bundles receive half the transfer allowance of many other regions, that both inbound and outbound transfer consume allowance, and that outbound traffic beyond a plan’s allowance can be charged. Allowances may be aggregated among same-size bundles in a region. Verify the current terms for the specific plan and region rather than applying a general AWS allowance to every VPS.

Account for the work the server must do
If the VPS encodes a live camera or program feed, actual CPU demand depends on the input, codec, resolution, frame rate and encoder settings. No named VPS size is established as sufficient for this church workload. Run the intended settings for a sustained test and observe CPU, memory, dropped frames and disconnects before relying on it. If the VPS only relays an already-encoded feed, its compute needs differ, but transfer capacity and network recovery still matter.
Set up YouTube Live and the encoder
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key through YouTube’s workflow.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, public scripts or logs. Store it only where the encoder can access it securely.
- Configure the encoder for a modest first test. YouTube’s standard encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. For ordinary SDR, it recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Match resolution, frame rate and bitrate. YouTube lists H.264 recommendations of 4 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. These are ingest recommendations, not proof that a particular VPS can encode or transmit those settings reliably. Start with one combination the VPS can sustain, then check the actual output and stream health before increasing quality.
- Enter the YouTube server URL and key in the VPS encoder. Start the feed and use YouTube’s preview and stream-health information to confirm that the ingest is arriving as expected before treating it as live service.
The official guidance reviewed does not prescribe a particular encoder installation command or certify a server image, VPS plan or church-specific configuration. Use the VPS provider’s supported operating system and the encoder’s documentation for installation steps; validate the full configuration with the actual video source rather than assuming that a successful connection means the server can sustain the chosen encode.

Test bandwidth, continuity and recovery before relying on it
YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate below available upload capacity with 20% headroom. Test outbound capacity from the VPS itself; a separate speed test or a download-speed result does not establish that the outbound path for the live feed is adequate. Shared network capacity can also constrain a connection.
- Run the real feed long enough to observe CPU and memory use, stream-health messages, dropped frames, disconnects and transfer consumption.
- Check what happens when the encoder process stops, the VPS reboots or the network connection fails. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing encoder failover, but it does not guarantee recovery behavior for a VPS or prescribe a particular India-region failover design.
- Write down who receives alerts, who can restart the encoder, and how an authorized person can recover the stream key without exposing it.
- Test a backup encoder or path if the church needs continuity through a server or network failure. Do not describe the system as uninterrupted unless the actual service arrangement supports that claim.
Plan replays separately from the always-on broadcast
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the church needs a dependable replay, maintain a separate recording or end and restart the live stream well before the 12-hour threshold. Ending and restarting creates an interruption and may create a new live event, while leaving one broadcast running beyond the threshold risks losing the archive.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Recheck channel eligibility, the selected stream, server URL and stream key. Confirm that the encoder is using a supported ingest protocol and that the key has not been exposed or replaced.
- Stream health reports instability or frames are dropped: Check the VPS’s outbound capacity and actual bitrate, then confirm the encoder settings and available headroom. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom; reduce the bitrate or resolution for a test if the connection cannot sustain the current output.
- The VPS becomes overloaded: Check sustained CPU and memory during the real feed. Encoding demand depends on the specific input and settings, so an advertised vCPU count is not a substitute for a long test. Lower the encoding workload or test a different plan before returning to continuous service.
- The stream stops after a reboot or process failure: Determine whether the encoder starts again and reconnects as intended, and test that behavior rather than assuming it. Assign an alert recipient and document a safe restart procedure.
- The monthly bill or transfer use is higher than expected: Compare actual usage with the plan’s regional allowance and overage rules. Recalculate using the sustained bitrate and duration, allowing for protocol overhead and all other instance traffic.
- The stream is interrupted or removed after music plays: Review the rights for every third-party work and any applicable licensing or Content ID arrangements. A religious or nonprofit purpose does not itself establish that a work is cleared for a YouTube live stream.
- No complete replay appears: Check the stream duration. YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all; use separate recording or shorter broadcast segments when archiving matters.
