How to Use an HLS Playlist as the Source for a YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube Live’s documented HLS workflow is for an encoder to push an HLS stream to YouTube. Its setup instructions do not describe a setting where you paste a remote .m3u8 playback URL and have YouTube pull it. To use an existing HLS playlist, you need a relay or encoder that can read that particular playlist and publish a separate HLS output that meets YouTube’s ingest requirements.

Source playlist and YouTube ingest are different things

An HLS playlist URL—often ending in .m3u8—describes media for a player to fetch. YouTube’s HLS ingest URL is a destination: an encoder sends media segments to it. YouTube’s documented setup covers the destination workflow, not a universal relay recipe for arbitrary public playlists. See YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream.

The bridge between them must be verified for both ends. It needs to access your source playlist and its media segments, then produce and push an HLS stream in YouTube’s required format. Some sources may also require authentication or have access restrictions; confirm that your relay can handle the source’s actual requirements. A tool’s ability to play an HLS playlist does not establish that it can publish HLS to YouTube.

Set up YouTube HLS ingest

  1. Create an HLS stream key: In YouTube Live Control Room, open Stream and create a new stream key with HLS selected as the stream protocol.
  2. Copy the Stream URL: Use the HTTPS HLS Stream URL displayed in Live Control Room. YouTube says the stream key is already included in this URL, so a separate key entry is not needed when using that endpoint. If your encoder’s YouTube HLS preset asks for credentials another way, follow that encoder’s instructions. Do not publish or share the URL: it contains stream credentials.
  3. Configure the relay or encoder: Set the source to your playlist and the destination to YouTube’s copied HLS Stream URL. Confirm the exact tool and version support both playlist input and HLS push output; select its YouTube HLS preset if available. Do not assume a preset can fetch your source playlist.
  4. Check the output parameters: Match YouTube’s HLS requirements listed below before starting the encoder.
  5. Start and verify: Start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check picture and sound, and review stream health. Click Go live only after the preview is ready. Monitor the stream during the event. YouTube’s general encoder setup guidance is in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

YouTube’s HLS output requirements

  • Segments: MPEG-TS (TS) format, with each segment 1–4 seconds long. A shorter segment can reduce latency.
  • Playlist: Rolling, with no more than five outstanding segments.
  • Transport: HTTPS POST or PUT.
  • Unsupported options: Byte-range playlists are not supported. Encryption other than HTTPS transport encryption is not supported.

These are requirements for the stream you send to YouTube, not necessarily properties of the source playlist. The relay may need to remux or transcode the source to produce compliant output. Check the current YouTube HLS setup requirements and your encoder’s documentation rather than assuming the source’s segment format or playlist structure will pass through unchanged.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a relay that handles both ends

YouTube’s HLS setup page lists Cobalt encoders, Harmonic, Mirillis Action, OBS and Telestream as options supporting HLS output. That list does not establish that every product, version or configuration can pull an arbitrary remote playlist. Before relying on a tool, verify the exact workflow rather than checking only for “HLS” in its feature list.

  • Can it open your specific playlist URL and fetch the referenced segments? Does it support any authentication or access controls your source requires?
  • Can it publish HLS to YouTube’s HTTPS ingest URL using POST or PUT?
  • Can it produce MPEG-TS segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments?
  • Can it handle your source’s codecs, audio, resolution and frame rate, remuxing or transcoding where necessary?
  • Can you monitor errors and recover if the source, network or destination disconnects?
  • What are the expected end-to-end delay and operating costs?

If a tool only plays the playlist locally, or only offers HLS playback, that does not prove it can push a compliant HLS stream to YouTube. YouTube’s documentation does not provide an end-to-end recipe for relaying any arbitrary public .m3u8 URL.

HLS or RTMPS?

HLS is useful when you need a YouTube-supported path for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. For ordinary live streaming, YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder guidance; RTMPS encrypts RTMP transport. HLS sends segmented video and has higher latency than RTMP. YouTube states that HLS disables its ultra-low-latency option. Read YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS and Manage live stream settings before choosing a protocol.

If the production does not need HLS-specific codec support or the HDR HLS path, check whether RTMPS meets your codec requirements and is simpler for your encoder. Do not choose HLS solely because the source is an HLS playlist: the relay still has to turn that input into a compliant YouTube push stream.

Resolution, bitrate, keyframes and HDR

There is no single bitrate that fits every resolution and codec. Use YouTube’s current resolution- and codec-specific table in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, and configure the relay’s output accordingly. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Test with audio and motion similar to the real program, check the preview and stream health, and monitor during the broadcast.

For HDR over HLS, YouTube’s requirements include HEVC, 10-bit video, BT.2020 color primaries and compatible PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. Its HDR guide says to leave manual resolution off for the described HLS setup. Confirm the source and encoder’s actual color metadata; do not infer HDR compatibility from a file label or resolution. See Stream HDR video on YouTube.

Test before the scheduled stream

  1. Run the complete source-to-YouTube path ahead of time, using the same playlist, encoder settings and network path planned for the event.
  2. Check that the source keeps advancing and that the relay is producing fresh segments rather than repeatedly serving a stalled playlist.
  3. Confirm YouTube receives the stream, displays a usable preview and reports healthy audio and video before selecting Go live.
  4. Check that the end-to-end delay is acceptable for your format. HLS’s segment-based delivery is not the ultra-low-latency path.
  5. Confirm you have the rights to stream the playlist’s content and that your channel and stream settings comply with YouTube’s rules. A technically valid ingest does not establish permission to broadcast the media.

Troubleshooting

YouTube does not receive a stream

Check that the relay is configured to push to the HTTPS Stream URL copied from the HLS stream key in Live Control Room, and that the selected stream protocol is HLS. Confirm the encoder supports HTTPS POST or PUT for HLS output. Re-copy the destination URL from the current stream setup if credentials may have changed; never substitute a guessed or hard-coded endpoint.

The relay cannot open the playlist

Verify the playlist URL from the relay’s own environment, including any required authentication or access permissions. Check whether referenced media segments are reachable and whether the source remains available. If the tool cannot read that specific source, it cannot serve as the bridge, even if it supports HLS output.

The source plays, but YouTube rejects or fails to show the output

Inspect the relay’s output rather than assuming the source playlist’s format is acceptable. Check for TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, supported HTTPS POST/PUT transport, and no byte-range playlists or non-HTTPS encryption. Check that your encoder is not outputting unsupported codecs or malformed media.

Preview appears but audio or video is missing

Check the source’s audio and video tracks, the relay’s selected tracks and any conversion settings. Test with a known-good sample that resembles the program, then confirm both picture and sound in Live Control Room before going live.

There is more delay than expected

HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video segments rather than a continuous stream, and YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option is unavailable with HLS. A shorter segment within YouTube’s permitted 1–4-second range can reduce latency, but it does not make HLS an ultra-low-latency mode.

The stream starts but later stalls or disconnects

Check whether the source playlist continues updating, the relay remains connected, and the network can sustain the output. Review encoder and Live Control Room health indicators, then test reconnect behavior before the event; recovery depends on the relay and configuration you use.
