How to Use AI When Publishing a Book: A Practical Guide

AI can help you plan, revise, check and produce a book, but it cannot take responsibility for the finished work. The safest, most useful approach is to keep the author in charge of the book’s ideas and expression, verify every claim and asset, check the rules of each publisher or platform, and proof the actual files before publication.

What using AI to publish a book means

AI can enter at nearly every stage: shaping an idea, organizing sources, outlining, drafting, editing, designing a cover, preparing metadata, formatting, translating and creating marketing copy. These are different jobs, with different quality, privacy, rights and disclosure considerations. AI is a tool in the publishing process, not a substitute for the author’s judgment or the checks required to make a book ready for readers.

Distinguish between two kinds of use. AI-assisted means you created the underlying material and used AI to brainstorm, edit, refine or check it. AI-generated means an AI tool created text, images or a translation that you use in the book. A human-authored book can include both kinds. Platforms may define the categories differently, so follow the rules of the service where you publish.

Decide what AI should do before you begin

AI is most useful for iterative, organizational or diagnostic tasks: generating possible angles, finding gaps in an outline, flagging repeated terms, drafting a checklist or suggesting questions readers may ask. Keep human control over the book’s central argument, personal testimony, narrative voice, interpretation of sources, ethical decisions, final selection of examples and final prose.

#1 Best Overall

For a documentary, history or other fact-based book, that distinction matters especially. A plausible-sounding summary is not evidence, and generated citations or quotations may be false. For fiction, a fluent suggestion may still be derivative, cliché, emotionally unconvincing or inconsistent with the story.

Workflow Authorial control KDP disclosure under current guidance Best suited to
AI-assisted: you create the content; AI helps improve or organize it Usually high Generally not required Planning, editing, proofreading and consistency checks
AI-generated: AI creates text, images or translations used in the book Variable Required for generated text, images and translations Experiments, working drafts or visual concepts, with review and disclosure as applicable

Amazon KDP’s definitions focus on how content was created: substantially editing AI-created text does not convert it into AI-assisted content under its current guidance. Read KDP’s AI content guidance before submitting.

Check rules, rights and privacy first

Platform rules and copyright are separate questions

KDP permits AI-generated material but requires authors to disclose it and remain responsible for compliance and accuracy. That platform requirement is not a decision about whether copyright protects the material. In the United States, the Copyright Office’s position is that copyright depends on sufficient human authorship and human determination of expressive elements. AI assistance does not automatically remove protection from human-created expression, while a prompt alone does not necessarily make the user the author of all the output. The analysis is specific to the material and jurisdiction. See the U.S. Copyright Office AI initiative and its January 29, 2025 summary.

Copyright is also not the only rights question. You are responsible for checking whether text, images, names, likenesses, trademarks, quotations or other material infringe someone else’s rights. Amazon’s content and quality guidance addresses misleading content and poor reader experience as well as compliance.

Review contracts and confidentiality obligations

Before uploading unpublished work, check the AI tool’s terms for your specific plan: how it handles prompts and files, whether content may be used for model improvement, and whether deletion is available. Do not assume that every plan has the same controls. Consider whether a manuscript contains client information, interview transcripts, personal data, coauthor material or publisher-confidential content. Upload only what is needed, remove identifying details where possible, keep a local master, and ask your publisher or lawyer before processing material subject to a contract or confidentiality duty.

Publishing agreements may set rules beyond a platform’s policy, including originality warranties, AI disclosure, confidentiality, translation, editorial changes, cover approval and derivative rights. Review the actual agreement. The Authors Guild’s model AI clauses offer examples of contract language authors may encounter; they are not a substitute for legal advice on a particular contract.

Plan the book with AI, then make the plan yours

  1. Define the reader and promise. Write down who the book is for, what problem it addresses, what change it promises and what experience or expertise you bring.
  2. Ask for alternatives. Have AI suggest several angles and possible chapter structures. Treat the output as a planning hypothesis, not a finished intellectual architecture.
  3. Reject generic structure. Look for repeated chapters, familiar listicle logic, a promise broader than your evidence, or an outline that could describe any book in the category.
  4. Add your contribution. Insert your own examples, reporting, sources, stories, analysis and point of view. Check that each chapter serves the reader promise.
  5. Write a book brief. Record the audience, scope, tone, chapter purpose, claims needing verification and material you still need to gather.

A useful prompt is: “Act as a developmental editor, not a ghostwriter. My audience is [audience]. Their problem is [problem]. The transformation I want to provide is [transformation]. My expertise and evidence are [details]. Suggest three book promises, a table of contents, the purpose and reader question for each chapter, and claims needing primary-source verification. Do not invent facts, quotations, studies or personal experiences.”

Use AI to organize research, not to be a source

  1. Ask AI to list questions and claims that need investigation.
  2. Find primary or authoritative sources independently and save their dates, jurisdiction and relevant passages.
  3. Use AI to summarize or compare source material you provide, not to fill gaps from memory.
  4. Check every summary against the original source and maintain a claim-and-source table.
  5. For medical, legal, financial, scientific, historical or safety-related material, have a qualified human review the relevant claims and verify that statistics and examples are current for publication.

For each important claim, record the claim, source, date, jurisdiction, exact passage supporting it and verification status. A prompt can require the model to mark unsupported claims rather than invent a source: “Using only the sources I provide, make a claim table with the supporting passage, source, date, jurisdiction and uncertainty. Mark anything unsupported as UNSUPPORTED. Do not fill gaps from memory.”

Draft without losing the author’s voice

Human draft with AI support

Writing the passage yourself and asking AI to flag grammar, clarity, repetition, structure or questions a skeptical reader might raise keeps you in control of the underlying expression. Ask it to flag issues rather than silently replace your prose. This is generally AI-assisted under KDP’s current definitions when the content is yours and the tool helps edit, refine, brainstorm or error-check it.

AI-generated working passages

If an AI tool creates prose that you use in the book, treat it as AI-generated for KDP disclosure purposes, even if you later revise it substantially. Verify facts, originality and rights, and decide deliberately whether the passage belongs in the finished work.

One-click full-book generation

A generated manuscript is not a finished book. It can repeat itself, invent citations, omit context, drift in terminology or character details, and sound generic. It also leaves unresolved questions about rights and reader value. A quick polish does not make AI-generated content AI-assisted under KDP’s definitions.

Keep a voice sheet and revision record

Before requesting edits, note your sentence rhythm, degree of formality, preferred vocabulary, humor, point of view, use of metaphor and intentional fragments. Tell the tool to preserve those traits, add no facts, and return both a minimally edited version and a list of changes. Keep earlier drafts so you can recover your voice and document how the work developed.

Edit in distinct passes

Developmental editing

Ask whether chapters advance the promise, whether the sequence makes sense, what steps or objections are missing, where assumptions lack support and which sections repeat. Make the structural decisions yourself.

Line and copyediting

Use AI to flag vague wording, long sentences, unclear pronouns, tone shifts, repeated words and possible mechanical errors. Check spelling, punctuation, names, dates, numbers, defined terms, cross-references and bibliography style against your chosen conventions. Have it flag suspected problems rather than making unreviewed changes.

Fiction continuity and final reading

For a novel, track names, ages, timeline, locations, objects, injuries, relationships, character knowledge and unresolved plot threads. Then read the whole book yourself in its intended format. A tool can identify likely inconsistencies; it cannot reliably decide whether a story feels emotionally credible or whether a nonfiction book is truthful and useful.

Use AI for cover concepts, not unchecked final art

AI can help develop genre research, mood boards, color directions, preliminary art direction and alternatives to discuss with a designer. Before publishing any image, check for resemblance to protected work, trademarks, recognizable likenesses and any restrictions in the tool’s commercial-use terms. Avoid asking for a living artist’s recognizable style. KDP treats AI-generated cover and interior images as AI-generated content for disclosure purposes; authors remain responsible for rights.

  • Check that the image signals the right genre and remains legible as a small retailer thumbnail.
  • Inspect faces, hands, lettering and repeated visual details for generation errors.
  • Add title and author typography deliberately rather than relying on generated lettering.
  • Check print resolution, dimensions, bleed and spine width against the edition’s specifications.
  • Inspect a print proof and consider contractual cover-approval terms if working with a publisher. The Authors Guild model clauses address AI-generated artwork among other AI-related terms.

Use AI in production, then validate the actual files

AI can help create a production checklist, spot inconsistent chapter headings, draft alt text or check a table of contents. It cannot replace the distributor’s previewer, EPUB validation, print-PDF inspection, device checks or a physical proof. Check trim size, margins and bleed, fonts, headers, page numbers, contents, links, image resolution, spine width, ISBN and contributor metadata.

KDP’s setup sequence is: open the Bookshelf, select + Create, choose a format, enter book details, upload the manuscript and cover, preview the files, set rights and pricing, accept the applicable terms and submit. The information entered is used for the Amazon detail page; KDP also supports linked ebook, paperback and hardcover editions. Follow its current book setup and publication instructions, since labels and policies can change.

Draft truthful metadata and marketing

AI can draft descriptions, subtitle options, keyword themes, reader FAQs, ad variations, newsletter copy and launch checklists based on material you provide. Review every phrase against the actual book. Do not invent endorsements, reviews, awards, credentials, statistics or performance claims, impersonate readers, or stuff irrelevant keywords. KDP’s content-quality guidance emphasizes accurate representation of the book.

For example: “Using only this summary and these sample chapters, draft three retailer descriptions, five subtitle options and keyword concepts. Do not add credentials, endorsements, awards, reviews, statistics or claims not supported by the material. Mark claims that need verification.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disclose AI-generated material where required

Under current KDP guidance, disclose text, images (including cover or interior art) and translations created by AI and used in the book. KDP does not require disclosure when you created the content and used AI only to brainstorm, edit, refine, proofread or error-check it. If the line is unclear, keep workflow records and ask KDP or qualified legal counsel before submission. Other publishers and platforms may have different rules.

Keep three questions separate: KDP’s disclosure rule is a platform-policy question; whether a work has copyright protection is a legal question; and whether your agreement permits a particular use is a contract question. A “yes” to one does not answer the others.

Choose distribution for the book’s reach

Service Potential fit Important qualification
Amazon KDP Authors prioritizing Amazon retail, Kindle and KDP’s paperback or hardcover workflow Requires compliance with KDP’s content, rights and AI-disclosure policies.
Draft2Digital Authors seeking aggregator-style ebook and print distribution Its FAQ says it supports AI-assisted content but rejects content generated entirely by AI or LLMs without extensive human editing. It reports an approximately 10% retail-price commission and a free assigned ISBN for books published through its system; check the current FAQ before relying on these terms.
IngramSpark Authors considering print distribution through bookstore, library or wholesale channels Distribution availability does not guarantee an order or placement. Check its current pricing and publishing resources.

There is no universal winner: choose based on the retailers and formats you want, the control you need and the setup you are prepared to manage. An aggregator’s convenience may come with a commission and less direct control over each retailer relationship; broader print distribution is not the same as bookstore demand.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Publishing raw AI output as though it were verified or finished.
  • Assuming substantial editing changes AI-generated material into AI-assisted material for KDP.
  • Treating a generated citation, quotation, statistic or legal statement as evidence.
  • Uploading a full confidential manuscript without checking the tool’s plan-specific terms and contractual obligations.
  • Using an image without checking likeness, trademark, similarity and commercial-use issues.
  • Writing metadata that promises content the book does not contain.
  • Skipping preview, file validation or a print proof.
  • Assuming distribution guarantees bookstore placement or that AI replaces professional editing, design or rights review.

Final pre-publication checklist

  • Can you identify what you created and what AI generated?
  • Have you checked the applicable platform rules, publishing contract and tool privacy terms?
  • Are claims, quotations, citations, figures, names and dates verified against actual sources?
  • Have you reviewed the manuscript for structure, voice, consistency and factual accuracy?
  • Do you have the rights and permissions needed for text and images?
  • Are cover, title, contributors, description and keywords accurate and consistent?
  • Have you previewed every edition, checked the final files and inspected a physical proof where relevant?
  • Have you made any required AI-generated-content disclosure before submitting?
