To keep a server playlist live on YouTube, configure an encoder on the server with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then start the encoder and confirm its feed appears in Live Control Room. The key authenticates and routes the encoder feed; it does not contain the playlist or play videos by itself. Your server must keep the playlist running and continuously send its output to YouTube.
What the stream key does—and what it does not do
YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” In practice, the key is a private credential that the encoder uses with YouTube’s stream URL to send a video feed. The playlist and the server-side playback software supply that feed; the key does not schedule videos, advance the playlist, or provide a viewer-facing watch-page link. Check that your channel can go live
Before configuring the server, confirm the channel is eligible. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Initial live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s getting-started guidance sets the minimum age for live streaming at 16. Check the current requirements for the account and channel in YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Get the YouTube stream URL and key

Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live.

Create a stream or open the scheduled stream you intend the server to feed. In its stream settings, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key.

Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, shared documents, or logs that others can access. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in the encoder.

Configure the server playlist and encoder
The playlist system and encoder are separate parts of the setup. The playlist must remain available and advance through its videos; the encoder must capture or receive that playback and continuously send it to YouTube using the URL and key. YouTube supports both software and hardware encoders, but the precise playlist scheduling and encoder fields depend on the software, hardware, and version you use.

Set up the playlist in the server’s playback system and confirm it advances through the intended videos, including at transitions and at the end of the list.

Open the encoder’s stream or destination settings. Enter YouTube’s stream URL in its server/URL field and the key in its stream-key field. Do not assume a field label or command is universal: follow the instructions for your encoder’s exact version.

Choose the encoder’s output settings and verify them against YouTube’s current guidance and the capabilities of the selected encoder and source. The available YouTube guidance does not define a universal server playlist command or a single set of encoder settings for every implementation.

Start the encoder. In Live Control Room, check that YouTube receives the feed and displays the preview. For a scheduled stream, use the on-screen Go live control when the preview is ready.

YouTube’s encoder instructions say: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Do not copy a real stream key into an example or a public configuration file.
Choose RTMP or RTMPS
Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it and your setup calls for encrypted transport. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; reveal and copy the secure URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming the displayed endpoint is RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions say that in the documented SSL error case, check that both the protocol and server are RTMPS; port 443 can be specified. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS
Test before leaving the stream unattended
An always-on stream needs operational checks, not just a successful first connection. Before relying on it unattended, verify the whole path from playlist playback to YouTube’s watch page and decide how you will detect and recover from interruptions.

Inspect the Live Control Room preview and confirm both picture and sound are present.

Test playlist transitions, the end-of-list behavior, and what happens after the playback software or encoder restarts.

If you configured encoder failover, test that backup path rather than assuming it will take over correctly.

If you need a complete recording, check that an independent local recording is being written and that the resulting file is usable.

Open the stream from the channel and watch page, including on mobile, and monitor audio and video quality while it runs.

Simulate or safely test a network interruption and confirm your encoder’s reconnect behavior and your monitoring process.
YouTube recommends checking the preview, testing failover where configured, checking archive integrity and accessibility, and monitoring audio and video. See YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a longer, uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be archived in full. If preserving the complete program matters, configure and verify an independent local recording instead of relying on YouTube’s archive for a stream lasting longer than 12 hours. Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending, or its URL/key fields are wrong. | Confirm the encoder is running, compare its URL and key with the stream settings in YouTube Studio, and check that the playlist is supplying media. |
| Authentication stops working after a key reset | The encoder still has the exposed or previous key. | Copy the replacement key from Live Control Room into the encoder, then restart or reconnect it as required by that encoder. |
| RTMPS connection reports an SSL error | The selected protocol or server endpoint may not be RTMPS. | Reveal the secure URL in Live Control Room and make sure both the encoder protocol and server use RTMPS. YouTube says port 443 can be specified for this documented error case. |
| The feed connects but the playlist stops advancing | The playback or playlist process may have stopped even though the encoder connection was established. | Check the playlist process independently, test transitions and restart behavior, and confirm the encoder is still receiving media. |
| The broadcast ends during an interruption | The encoder or server may not reconnect automatically, or a configured backup may not take over. | Test reconnect and failover behavior before unattended operation; monitor the Live Control Room preview and the server-side processes. |
| A long broadcast is missing from the YouTube archive | The automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, not a guarantee for longer sessions. | Use a separately configured local recording when a complete copy is important, and verify the recording file. |
