To use a YouTube stream key with OBS, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into OBS, then start the encoder and confirm YouTube receives a preview. The key lets OBS send video to YouTube; it does not keep your computer or internet connection online. A continuous stream therefore depends on the whole setup, not just the key.
Before you start
You need a verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, OBS installed, a video or other content to send, and a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your stream. YouTube’s current eligibility requirements are described in its live-streaming help.
Decide whether you are creating a new stream or using a scheduled one, and whether the broadcast should be public, unlisted, or private. A private or unlisted test can help you check the setup before viewers arrive.
Set up YouTube Studio and copy the key
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- Create a new stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. YouTube may load prior settings, including a previously used stream key, so check that the selected stream is the right one.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not post it in screenshots, chat, or public support requests.
Enter the YouTube stream key in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
- Select the appropriate YouTube service if it is available in the service list. If you are configuring a custom server, enter the YouTube stream URL in the server field and the matching key in the stream-key field. The URL and key must belong to the same YouTube stream.
- Apply the settings. Before starting, verify that OBS is configured for the intended stream and protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure RTMP transport; HLS uses a different ingestion setup and should not be configured by pasting an HLS URL into an RTMP server field.
- In OBS, click Start Streaming. Wait for the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that it shows the intended picture and audio.
- For a scheduled broadcast, follow the Live Control Room start procedure and check whether auto-start is enabled. Confirm the visibility setting before the planned public start.
OBS’s overview explains the service or custom-server setup in its streaming guide. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover the corresponding Live Control Room workflow.

Choose settings your connection can sustain
Set the output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit both the material and the stable upload capacity available to the streaming computer. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; its encoder settings table lists, for example, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps using AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps for the same resolution and frame rate using H.264. These are codec-specific recommendations, not universal settings. Check YouTube’s encoder settings for the configuration you plan to use.
- Bitrate: Use a rate your connection can sustain steadily, not simply the highest value OBS permits. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. Check upload speed rather than download speed.
- Rate control and keyframes: YouTube’s standard RTMP/RTMPS guidance specifies CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Supported choices depend on protocol and encoder.
- Codec and frame rate: YouTube’s standard guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and up to 60 fps, subject to the protocol and encoder in use.
- Audio and picture: Test both before relying on a long run. A preview that appears does not by itself confirm that viewers will hear the intended audio or see the correct source throughout.
Start with capacity that remains stable under real conditions. If other devices or applications share the connection, their traffic can reduce the upload available to OBS.

Keep a stream running—and understand the limits
A stream key identifies the destination for an encoder feed. It cannot prevent a computer shutdown, OBS crash, network outage, or YouTube interruption. YouTube recommends setting up ahead of the event, starting the encoder early enough to preview the feed, and monitoring the broadcast rather than assuming a long stream will take care of itself.
Use OBS reconnect for temporary interruptions
OBS has an automatic reconnect option that can try to restore an encoder connection after an interruption. It may help with a brief drop, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted viewing. OBS notes that dropped frames and disconnections can result from an unstable network or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Check the connection and OBS or YouTube stream health if interruptions recur.

Loop a media file when the content should repeat
For a prerecorded video, add it as an OBS Media Source and enable its Loop setting so the file plays again after it finishes. That repeats the media source; it does not restart OBS, protect the computer from failure, or guarantee that YouTube keeps a single live event open.
Plan for event length and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. That is not a promise that one live event can run indefinitely or that a continuous broadcast will become an unlimited archive. If the stream needs to remain live for a long period, plan how you will monitor the encoder and handle interruptions rather than relying on an open-ended event.

End or test the broadcast safely
- For a test, set the stream to unlisted or private where appropriate, then start OBS and verify the preview, audio, and watch page before using the intended audience setting.
- For a planned end, use the appropriate end action in Live Control Room and stop sending from OBS according to the scheduled-stream and auto-stop workflow shown there.
- After stopping, check that the event has ended as intended. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or repeated disconnections | The connection is unstable or the configured bitrate is too high for sustainable upload. | Check stable upload capacity and stream health, reduce bitrate to a sustainable value, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. If Wi-Fi instability is suspected, a wired Ethernet connection is an optional diagnostic—not a guaranteed fix. See YouTube’s streaming tips and the OBS connection troubleshooting guide. |
| YouTube rejects the key or the wrong stream appears | OBS may have an old key, a key for another stream, or a mismatched server URL. | In Live Control Room, confirm the selected stream and current key, then update OBS with the matching URL and key. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in OBS. |
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | OBS may not be sending, the server URL and key may not match, or network access may be blocked. | Confirm OBS is streaming to the correct YouTube destination with the matching key, check the connection, and review the OBS and YouTube connection guidance. Never share the key while asking for help. |
| Video repeats, but the broadcast still stops | Media looping repeats only the source file; it does not keep the OBS application, computer, network, or YouTube event alive. | Check whether OBS is still running and whether the encoder remains connected. Treat looping and reconnect as limited recovery tools, not a complete continuity system. |
| HLS connection does not work with the usual OBS server setup | HLS is a separate ingestion configuration, not an RTMP URL variant. | Use the protocol and requirements selected in YouTube’s stream settings. YouTube notes HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments and has specific segment and URL requirements. Consult its HLS ingestion guidance. |
