First configure OBS and YouTube, then map and test the keys against the actual live output. A Stream Deck makes OBS easier to operate; it does not keep a computer, network connection or stream running by itself.
What you need before setting up the keys
- OBS Studio configured with the scenes and sources for the broadcast.
- The Stream Deck app and Elgato’s OBS Studio integration. Elgato’s integration article lists Stream Deck 5.3 or newer and OBS Studio 27.0 or newer as requirements; check current app and operating-system compatibility before installing. The OBS plugin is free and available through the Elgato Marketplace or Stream Deck app.
- A Stream Deck device. Choose by how many controls you want visible at once and whether dials are useful; the OBS actions are integration features, not exclusive to a particular model.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
Elgato’s profile documentation lists the Mini with 6 keys, Neo with 8, standard Stream Deck with 15, XL with 32, and Stream Deck + options with dials. These differences affect layout and control density, not the OBS functions available. Check current device compatibility and availability before choosing a model.
Prepare OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Build the broadcast in OBS. Create and name the scenes and sources you plan to use. Check that video, audio and any media sources behave as intended before adding hardware controls.
- Get the YouTube stream details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. The key lets YouTube accept the encoder feed, so treat it like a credential: do not put it in a Stream Deck label, screen capture or public profile.
- Enter the details in OBS. Open OBS stream settings and enter the YouTube stream URL and key. Start with a test rather than relying on a newly configured setup for an unattended broadcast.
- Check the YouTube preview. Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled broadcast, complete the go-live step required by that stream’s configuration after checking the preview.
Install the OBS integration and map your Stream Deck
- Install the integration. In the Stream Deck app, install Elgato’s OBS Studio plugin through the app or Marketplace, then make sure OBS is open and the integration can communicate with it.
- Choose a clear live profile. Profiles can contain plugin actions, folders and pages, but Elgato notes they are specific to operating system and device type. Use an unmistakable profile for the live workflow. Avoid app-based automatic profile switching that might hide critical controls while OBS is running.
- Drag actions onto keys. Add the OBS actions you need, then configure each one for the intended scene, source or operation. Available actions include scene selection, source visibility, source audio mute/unmute, Studio Mode, transitions, media-source controls, and stream start/stop.
- Respect action preconditions. Preview-to-Program requires Studio Mode. Source visibility controls apply to the currently selected Scene Collection, so confirm that collection before relying on a visibility key.
- Make risky controls unmistakable. Label stream stop plainly and keep it separate from routine scene changes. Avoid putting a stop action where it can be pressed accidentally.
- Test every key. Press each control while observing OBS, then verify the result in YouTube’s preview or live output. Confirm that a scene change, mute, media action or stream command affects the intended source and broadcast.
Useful keys for a long-running broadcast
- Named scene keys: switch directly to a known scene instead of navigating menus.
- Source mute toggle: quickly mute or restore the selected microphone or other audio source.
- Media restart or stop: useful when a media source is part of the program and needs operator intervention.
- Stream start/stop: convenient for deliberate manual control, but not a substitute for monitoring or recovery planning.
- Studio Mode or transition controls: helpful when the operator previews changes before sending them to Program.
Use Multi Actions carefully
Elgato Multi Actions run a configured sequence from one key and can include delays. For example, a tested sequence could select the starting scene, wait for OBS to settle, start local recording, wait again, and then start streaming. Elgato’s example uses a similar recording, delay, scene-switch, delay and stream-start sequence.
A delay only gives an action time; it does not confirm that it succeeded. Test a Multi Action repeatedly before air, watch the actual output, and retain separate keys for recovery. If a step fails, a single sequence can make it harder to tell which action did not complete.

Can a Stream Deck run an OBS YouTube stream 24/7?
It can issue OBS commands, including starting or stopping a stream, but the Stream Deck is a control surface—not an uptime monitor. The documented workflow does not guarantee unattended operation. A 24/7 setup still depends on the computer, OBS, network connection and YouTube ingest staying available, and the official materials do not establish a universal automated Stream Deck recovery configuration.
Plan for power or network interruptions, OBS or system restarts, audio/video monitoring and stream recovery. YouTube recommends checking the preview, verifying local archive files are growing, checking availability on watch pages and mobile, and monitoring audio and video continuously. A test broadcast lets you verify both the Stream Deck actions and the end-to-end output before you depend on them.

Plan separately for recordings and replays
YouTube Help guidance accessed October 3, 2026 says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. YouTube also says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for very long streams, including those longer than 12 hours. Do not assume one continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete YouTube replay or full rewind history.
If keeping the full program matters, plan local recording and a deliberate segmentation and archive workflow. Check that local files are actually growing during the stream, and arrange how recordings will be retained and divided rather than relying on YouTube’s archive or DVR for a continuous day-long broadcast.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- An OBS action is missing or does nothing: Confirm the OBS plugin is installed, OBS is open, and the app versions meet the documented integration requirements. Recheck that the action is configured for the intended scene or source.
- A source visibility key affects the wrong setup: Source visibility applies to the currently selected Scene Collection. Select the intended collection and test the key again.
- Preview-to-Program does not work: Enable Studio Mode in OBS; that action requires it.
- YouTube receives no encoder feed: Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS and confirm the encoder is started. Inspect the Live Control Room preview before completing the go-live step.
- A Multi Action behaves inconsistently: Test each action on its own, then retest the sequence with suitable delays. Delays do not confirm success; keep individual controls available.
- The stream stops during an unattended run: A Stream Deck key cannot restore power, internet access or a failed OBS process. Use a monitoring and recovery plan that covers those failures rather than treating the key as automatic recovery.
- A long stream has no complete replay: YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours, and DVR may be limited. Use local recording and a planned segmentation process if a full archive is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
