Scheduling creates an upcoming stream and watch page; it does not generate or continuously transmit radio audio. For an always-on station, you must also plan how the feed will run, be monitored, and recover from interruptions.
What a scheduled stream does—and what it does not do
A scheduled livestream establishes an upcoming event on your channel. Viewers can visit its watch page and, where available, set a reminder. The station’s encoder or streaming service still has to send the audio to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and key. You then start the event in Live Control Room after YouTube receives the encoder preview.
That distinction matters for radio: scheduling is an event-management step, not a 24/7 playout system. You need a source that can keep supplying audio, a way to handle interruptions, and an operator or tested automation plan.
Check channel eligibility and prepare the station
- Confirm livestream access. YouTube’s guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance also gives a minimum age of 16. Check the channel’s current access and restrictions before announcing a broadcast. YouTube live streaming tips
- Choose the audio source. This might be a radio playout system, mixer, computer playback, or another source that can feed your encoder. External microphones, preamps, and other audio hardware are options for particular signal chains, not universal requirements. Confirm that the source and encoder have compatible connections.
- Decide how the feed will continue. Identify who or what will keep audio playing, how the station will detect silence or a dropped connection, and how it will restart the feed. Test a backup path if continuous availability is important; a scheduled event alone does not provide failover.
- Confirm broadcast rights. YouTube’s technical setup guidance is not music-licensing advice. Separately verify that your station has the rights needed to transmit every recording, performance, and other audio in the programme.
Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream.
- Create a new stream or reuse prior settings. Review the title, description, thumbnail, privacy, date, and time before saving. Reusing settings can copy metadata, the stream key, and auto-start/auto-stop selections, so check each copied value rather than assuming it is appropriate for this broadcast. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Check the scheduled event’s watch page and privacy setting. Scheduling supports an upcoming event and viewer reminders; trailer availability is subject to YouTube’s eligibility rules. YouTube’s settings guidance says trailers require more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. Manage live stream settings
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and key for the encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
Configure the encoder and audio feed
Enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP/RTMPS destination fields. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Available protocol, codec, resolution, and bitrate choices depend on the encoder; use YouTube’s current settings table and the encoder’s documentation rather than copying settings intended for a different setup. Choose settings the connection can sustain
Set the encoder to a format supported by both the encoder and YouTube, and choose a bitrate that the station’s upstream connection can sustain reliably. YouTube publishes bitrate ranges by resolution and encoder settings; those figures are not a reason to select high-resolution video for an audio-led radio broadcast. A static image or other simple visual may accompany the audio if your station chooses, but the stream must still be encoded and sent continuously.
Allow network headroom rather than operating at the connection’s theoretical maximum. If the feed buffers, drops frames, or disconnects, reduce the load or improve the connection and test again. Confirm that audio is reaching the encoder at a sensible level and that the selected input is the one actually carrying the programme.

Keep keys and automation under control
YouTube supports reusable stream keys, which can simplify repeated broadcasts. Reuse reduces setup work but also means the key must remain protected and associated with the intended channel and encoder. Auto-start and auto-stop can let an encoder control event start or stop when enabled. Test those settings with the station’s workflow; they do not monitor the broadcast or prove that a restart will work after a failure.
Run a preflight and start the broadcast
YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it. Treat those as planning guidance, especially for a first broadcast or a changed setup. YouTube live streaming tips

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Start the station’s audio source and confirm the intended programme is playing.
- Start the encoder early enough to check its connection and audio meters. Verify the selected audio input, levels, and output format.
- Open the event in Live Control Room. Wait for the encoder preview, then check the watch page from a viewer’s perspective and listen for clean, correctly routed audio.
- When the preview is ready, select Go live in Live Control Room, unless you have deliberately configured and tested an auto-start workflow.
- Monitor the stream after launch. Check that the programme continues, audio remains present, and the encoder and YouTube show no connection warnings. If uninterrupted service matters, have a person or tested monitoring system able to respond.
Plan for long-running broadcasts and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That makes it unsafe to assume one scheduled event will serve as an indefinite broadcast. Decide how the station will handle event duration, transitions, restarts, and archives, then verify the behavior in the actual channel and encoder setup before relying on it. The cited guidance does not establish a single exact method for uninterrupted 24/7 streaming. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
For a continuous operation, document who checks the stream, how a dropped feed is detected, who can restart it, and what the backup source or connection is. Test the procedure under realistic conditions before treating it as a station’s continuity plan.

End or hand off an event carefully
When the broadcast is meant to end, stop the encoder’s feed and use End Stream in Live Control Room as appropriate for the setup. Before stopping, determine what should happen to the event archive and what the next scheduled event or feed will be. Confirm the result in the channel rather than assuming that ending one event automatically starts another.
Troubleshoot common problems
- Livestreaming is not available. Check channel verification, any live-streaming restrictions, and whether first-time activation is still processing. YouTube says initial enablement can take up to 24 hours; allow for that before the planned event. YouTube live streaming tips
- The event is scheduled but viewers hear nothing. Scheduling does not send the audio. Confirm the audio source is playing, the encoder is running, and its selected input and meters show the station feed.
- Live Control Room has no preview. Check that the encoder is pointed at the correct stream URL and key, that it is actually sending, and that the chosen protocol and format are supported. If the key was reset or exposed, update the encoder with the current key.
- The preview works but the event has not started. Start the event with Go live in Live Control Room, or check that a deliberately configured auto-start option is enabled and behaving as tested.
- The stream disconnects or audio breaks up. Check encoder status, the station’s upstream connection, and whether the chosen bitrate is sustainable. Lower the stream load or address the connection problem, then test recovery rather than assuming YouTube will restore the station feed automatically.
- A long broadcast ends or its archive behavior is unexpected. Review the stream’s duration and YouTube’s under-12-hour archive guidance, then inspect what happened in this channel’s setup. Plan a verified rotation or restart approach instead of treating one scheduled event as an indefinite session.
