Adding subtitles to the prerecorded tour is only half the job. First create and review captions for the uploaded video; then, separately, configure captions to be delivered with the YouTube Live broadcast. A video’s YouTube Studio subtitle track does not automatically become captions on a live loop.
1. Prepare an accurate transcript
Start with the finished property-tour video and a transcript that matches what is actually said. Correct proper nouns and details that speech recognition can easily mishear: property and street names, agent names, room labels, and measurements. Add relevant non-speech cues where they help viewers understand the audio, such as [door closes] or [traffic]. YouTube’s manual caption guidance also gives examples such as “[applause]” and “[thunder]”.
For a tour, check every address, dimension, price or feature stated aloud against the source material before publishing. Captions that change a street name or measurement can mislead prospective viewers.
2. Add subtitles to the uploaded video
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Subtitles.
- Select the property-tour video and choose the language spoken in it.
- Choose a caption method: upload a timed caption file, auto-sync transcript text, or enter captions manually.
- Review the timing and wording, correct errors, then save or publish the track.
YouTube says auto-sync text must be in the same language as the spoken audio. It does not recommend that method for videos longer than an hour or with poor audio. Automatic transcription can also misrecognize names, numbers, and overlapping speech, so review the result rather than treating it as a verified transcript. See YouTube’s instructions for adding subtitles and captions and its automatic caption guidance.

3. Choose a caption-file format
YouTube lists SRT and SBV as basic subtitle formats. It also documents WebVTT and TTML/DFXP variants, which can support different styling and positioning features. The best choice depends on your workflow: use a format accepted by the tool that creates or edits the captions, and confirm separately that the software or encoder used for the live broadcast can deliver captions in a supported way. A file format accepted for an uploaded video is not, by itself, evidence that it will work as a live caption feed. See YouTube’s supported caption-file formats.
4. Configure captions for the live loop
YouTube describes live captions as a separate delivery path. Captions need to reach the live stream through embedded EIA-608/CEA-608 or CEA-708 captions, or through supported caption software that sends captions over HTTP. For an event-style caption setup, YouTube uses a signed captions-ingestion URL; its guidance says one stream entry point can have one caption feed. The captioning software or encoder must produce and deliver the captions in sync with the looping video.

Plan this stage with the person responsible for the live encoder or caption software. Verify that the actual combination of loop source, encoder, and caption delivery method is supported; do not assume that adding a subtitle file in Studio configures the live feed. YouTube’s core instruction is: “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” Read YouTube’s live caption requirements for the applicable setup details.
5. Test the viewer experience and replay
Check captions on the viewer-facing live player while the loop is running. Confirm the language, completeness, timing, and readability, paying particular attention to addresses, names, room labels, and measurements. Check the replay separately after the stream ends: the live feed and the archived video are different caption checks.

YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain on the video after a live stream ends. Captions may instead be generated through the video-on-demand process, and may differ from the live captions. Long loops also have a playback caveat: YouTube says DVR lets viewers pause and rewind, but rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. That limit concerns DVR behavior, not caption delivery. See YouTube’s DVR guidance and live automatic caption guidance.
What to know about YouTube live auto-captions
YouTube’s cited Help guidance describes live automatic captions as English-only and available only to eligible channels as the feature rolls out. It also requires normal latency. Poor sound, unsupported language, overlapping speakers, and other audio problems can prevent captions or reduce their accuracy. Because property names and measurements matter, reviewed captions delivered through a supported live-caption workflow are safer than relying on speech recognition alone.

When outside captioning help may make sense
If you hire a captioning provider, compare the details that affect this particular workflow:
- Language coverage and whether a human reviews the transcript.
- Turnaround time and accuracy with proper nouns and property terminology.
- Supported file formats and compatibility with your live caption delivery setup.
- How corrections are handled for both the live stream and the replay.
YouTube lists 3Play Media, Amara, and Amberscript as third-party captioning or subtitling services, but says it cannot guarantee their quality or help resolve disputes. The list is voluntary and not comprehensive; confirm current capabilities and terms directly with any provider. See YouTube’s third-party captioning-services information.
