A Raspberry Pi 5 can send a camera feed to YouTube Live, but it is a configurable, software-encoded setup—not a plug-and-play 24/7 streaming appliance. You need a compatible video source, a capture-and-encoding pipeline, reliable power and internet, and a YouTube stream key. Test the complete setup under realistic conditions: continuous operation depends on every part staying healthy.

Can a Raspberry Pi 5 run a continuous YouTube livestream?

Yes, with qualifications. The signal path is video source → Pi capture software → software encoder → network connection → YouTube Live. Raspberry Pi 5 does not have a dedicated H.264 hardware encoder; Raspberry Pi documents that it uses software video encoders. The achievable resolution, frame rate and stability therefore depend on the specific input, encoding settings, other work the Pi is doing and the quality of the network connection. Raspberry Pi camera and video documentation

“Continuous” does not mean guaranteed uninterrupted service. Power loss, a camera or software failure, network instability, YouTube stream-health problems or account restrictions can interrupt a broadcast. Preflight and monitor the actual setup rather than assuming that a successful short test proves unattended 24/7 endurance.

Choose your video source and stream target

Raspberry Pi camera

A Raspberry Pi Camera Module is the most directly supported camera path in Raspberry Pi’s documentation. Its camera software, including rpicam-vid, can capture video for a streaming pipeline. Follow the current instructions for your particular camera and operating-system release.

USB camera or another video feed

Third-party USB cameras, capture devices and other inputs may work, but compatibility depends on the exact device, driver and capture software. Confirm that the source is visible to the Pi and that the chosen pipeline can capture its video—and audio if needed—before configuring YouTube. The documented Raspberry Pi camera examples do not establish a universal compatibility list for third-party devices.

Decide what viewers should receive

Set the intended resolution, frame rate and audio format based on the source and what the Pi can encode continuously. A fixed camera aimed at a quiet scene may behave differently from one capturing movement and complex detail. Documentary footage with narration, ambient sound or music also needs representative audio testing; do not treat video-only capture as a complete production test.

Prepare the Raspberry Pi 5

  • Operating system and boot media: Raspberry Pi recommends at least 8 GB of microSD storage for Raspberry Pi OS Lite and 32 GB for desktop editions. Lite is command-line-only and may suit a headless encoder. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation
  • Power: Raspberry Pi recommends its 27 W USB-C power supply for Pi 5, rated at 5 V and 5 A. Use a suitable supply for a system expected to remain on; an unstable power source can undermine the whole setup. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation
  • Network: Use a stable internet connection and measure the available upload capacity where the Pi will run. Ethernet is a reasonable option to reduce reliance on Wi-Fi conditions, but it does not guarantee that the internet connection or YouTube ingest will stay uninterrupted.
  • Administration: A headless Pi can be managed over the network with SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect. A display, keyboard and mouse can help during initial setup, but need not remain attached to a permanent headless installation.

Build and test the capture-and-encoding pipeline

Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes low-latency capture options and a GStreamer streaming path. For Pi 5, its example replaces the Pi 4 hardware-encoder element with x264enc speed-preset=1 threads=1. This is an example of a Pi camera/network pipeline, not a guaranteed, ready-made YouTube Live configuration. Adapt it to the selected input and YouTube’s current ingest requirements, and verify the result on the actual system. Raspberry Pi camera and video documentation

For rpicam-vid, Raspberry Pi recommends considering --low-latency for real-time streaming. It can reduce encoding latency, but with slightly worse coding efficiency and potentially a slightly lower maximum frame rate. Test whether the tradeoff suits the chosen resolution and motion; it is not a free performance improvement.

Raspberry Pi’s 2026 H.264 encoding whitepaper reports that low-latency 1080p30 software encoding on Pi 5 used 60–90% of one CPU core in its tested setup. Treat that as a vendor benchmark under the whitepaper’s conditions—not as a prediction for your camera, audio, muxing, network, software versions or concurrent processes. Leave room for the rest of the pipeline and observe actual performance during a representative trial. Raspberry Pi camera and video documentation

Set YouTube ingest, codec and bitrate

In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and use its stream settings to obtain the ingest address and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel. Add the current YouTube-provided ingest details to your encoder rather than copying an endpoint from an old tutorial. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for live ingest. Its encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube Live encoder settings

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, no more than four seconds apart. Set these in the encoder where available, and check that the selected codec and settings are actually supported by the Pi pipeline you are using. Support for a codec at YouTube’s ingest does not establish that your chosen Pi software encoder can produce it efficiently.

YouTube 1080p30 guidance Recommended bitrate Important qualification
H.264 5–14 Mbps YouTube’s recommended ingest range; the Pi pipeline may not sustain its upper end.
H.265/HEVC or AV1 4–10 Mbps YouTube’s recommended ingest range; confirm the actual encoder implementation and performance separately.

These figures are YouTube’s current encoder-setting guidance, accessed in 2026, not a guarantee of picture quality or Pi encoding capacity. Choose an output bitrate that the encoder can sustain and the measured upload connection can carry reliably. The available upload speed needs headroom for variation and other network use; an upload test is a starting point, not proof of an uninterrupted stream. YouTube Live encoder settings

RTMPS or HLS: which ingest should you use?

For a typical encoder setup, start with YouTube’s RTMPS guidance. HLS is not a drop-in protocol change for a simple RTMP command: Google documents a playlist-and-segment workflow using HTTPS, M2TS muxing, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio and a closed GOP. Google frames HLS ingest for encoder vendors and high-quality or high-resolution streams, with relatively higher latency. Unless your software and use case specifically support that workflow, do not choose HLS as a shortcut around configuring RTMPS. YouTube Live ingestion protocols

Preflight before leaving the Pi unattended

  1. Check capture first: Confirm the intended camera or other source appears at the selected resolution and frame rate. Check focus, exposure and audio separately.
  2. Test the complete encoder-to-YouTube path: Use the selected codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio and ingest protocol. Confirm the channel is receiving the expected image and sound.
  3. Reproduce real conditions: Test with representative movement and audio, not just an empty or silent scene. Let the stream run long enough to observe CPU load, dropped frames, network behavior and YouTube stream-health messages.
  4. Monitor YouTube stream health: Review warnings and status in YouTube Studio during the test and while the stream is live. YouTube recommends pre-stream testing and monitoring. YouTube Live encoder settings
  5. Plan human checks: Decide how you will notice a failed source, encoder, connection or broadcast. The sources cited here do not establish a universal automatic-reconnect or reboot-recovery recipe for every Pi and YouTube setup.

Continuous operation: limits and likely failure points

A successful connection does not prove that the Pi will recover correctly after a power cut, camera disconnect, software crash or YouTube ingest interruption. Nor does it establish thermal or storage endurance for a particular installation. Raspberry Pi’s documented encoding example and YouTube’s preflight recommendations do not promise unattended recovery or continuous uptime. Test the precise system and define how it will be checked and restarted if it fails.

  • Power: Check the supply and cabling if the Pi reboots, drops peripherals or behaves inconsistently.
  • Network: If YouTube reports connection or bitrate problems, measure upload performance at the Pi’s location and lower the output bitrate or resolution to a level the connection sustains.
  • Encoding load: If frames drop or the stream becomes unstable, reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify the pipeline, or test a less demanding setting. Do not assume the whitepaper benchmark predicts your full workload.
  • Source or audio: If video or sound disappears, isolate capture from the network stream and confirm the source remains available to the capture software.
  • YouTube access: Confirm the channel is eligible to livestream and that no account-specific restriction or stream configuration issue is preventing broadcast. Availability and interface details can vary by account.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep an uploaded recording or playlist live on YouTube rather than broadcast a camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving a Pi or computer running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
