How to Use a Playlist Scheduler to Change Videos During a Continuous YouTube Livestream

Set up an ordered or looping OBS playlist, switch scenes without ending your YouTube broadcast, and understand why exact-time changes need separate automation.

To change prerecorded videos during one continuous YouTube livestream, schedule or start the YouTube broadcast, then control the video program in the encoder. In OBS Studio, add a VLC Video source, arrange the files in playback order, and choose whether to shuffle or loop them. YouTube’s own playlist repeat control affects a viewer’s playback; it does not change the video your encoder sends to the live stream.

Know which playlist or schedule you need

  • YouTube player playlist: A viewer can repeat videos in the YouTube player. This does not schedule the content sent by your encoder. YouTube Help explains the viewer-side loop control.
  • OBS media playlist: OBS plays local media files into the live program. Its VLC Video source provides playlist order, shuffle, and loop controls.
  • Scheduled YouTube broadcast: Scheduling an event on YouTube sets up the broadcast event; it does not schedule which local video OBS plays.
  • Timed scene automation: A separate control layer can switch OBS scenes or sources. Its trigger might be elapsed time, a media event, or a wall-clock time; confirm which one your chosen tool actually supports.

The distinction matters because YouTube treats the broadcast event and the incoming live video stream as separate resources in its Live Streaming API. Changing the program in OBS is not the same as ending the YouTube broadcast.

Set up an ordered playlist in OBS

This method is for a local computer running OBS and playing prerecorded media. OBS’s Media Sources guide covers the relevant source options. It notes that VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to be available, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS. If VLC Video is missing in OBS, check that VLC is installed and that both applications use the same architecture.
  2. Open the scene that will go to YouTube. In OBS, add a source using Sources > + > VLC Video. If VLC Video is not listed, revisit the installation and architecture check.
  3. Add the media files in the order you want them to play. Use the source’s playlist controls to add the files and arrange their sequence. Keep Shuffle Playlist off if the order matters.
  4. Choose whether the list should repeat. Turn on Loop Playlist to start again after the final item. Leave it off if the sequence should end after the last file.
  5. Set behavior when the source is hidden. Check the source’s visibility behavior: OBS offers options that determine whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while that source is not visible. Choose the behavior that matches how you plan to switch scenes.
  6. Connect OBS to the YouTube broadcast and check the output. Add your YouTube stream key in OBS’s streaming settings, start the encoder connection, and check the OBS preview and YouTube stream health. Keep the encoder session and YouTube broadcast running while the playlist advances.

OBS’s documented playlist controls handle sequence, shuffle, and looping. They do not establish that a playlist item can be set to start at a particular wall-clock time.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Change videos without ending the livestream

For a playlist that advances on its own, let the VLC Video source move to the next file. For a change you initiate, switch the active media source or OBS scene while keeping the encoder connected to the same YouTube broadcast. Before going live, confirm in the preview that the intended scene or source is active. Stopping the broadcast is a separate action from changing what OBS sends.

If you need different program blocks, create separate OBS scenes or sources for them. This makes each block easier to select and check than relying on a YouTube player playlist, which does not control the outgoing encoder program.

Can OBS switch to a video at a specific time?

Do not assume the VLC playlist’s order or loop setting is a clock-time scheduler. The official OBS media-source guide describes playback behavior, not a way to target a chosen item at a specific time of day.

For planned transitions, a separate scene-automation method is an option. An OBS Forums discussion opened in 2023 suggested Advanced Scene Switcher macros, but that is community advice rather than an official guarantee of exact-time playlist behavior. Check the current tool’s support and timer behavior, identify whether its trigger is elapsed or wall-clock time, and rehearse privately or unlisted before using it on air.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo sends files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for current service details, then start your free day.

Troubleshoot playlist changes

  • VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, then check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS’s guide specifically notes the 64-bit OBS/64-bit VLC requirement.
  • The files play in the wrong order: Check the playlist order and turn off Shuffle Playlist if you need a fixed sequence.
  • The list stops after the final video: Enable Loop Playlist if you want it to begin again.
  • Playback behaves unexpectedly after a scene switch: Review the source’s visibility behavior to see whether it continues, pauses, or stops while hidden.
  • A video does not change at the time you expected: Playlist progression is not proof of clock-time scheduling. Check the trigger configured in your separate automation method and rehearse it before the live event.
  • New playlist items do not appear while live: Verify how your setup reloads playlist contents before relying on a live edit. An OBS forum thread from 2023 reported inconsistent refresh behavior for one operator; it does not establish a universal limitation.

Check rights and YouTube rules before streaming

Having a video file does not by itself establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Make sure you have the necessary rights for every item in the playlist and check YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright requirements before going live. For an ongoing channel, also consider whether the content is sufficiently original and valuable for your intended use; repeating prerecorded material does not itself establish eligibility for monetization or compliance with platform policies.
