1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse Linode Object Storage—now Akamai Cloud Object Storage—to store your video, then use OBS to play it and send the resulting live program to YouTube. The bucket is storage, not a live encoder or YouTube ingest service: OBS sits between the stored file and your broadcast. Before going live, confirm the bucket’s actual regional endpoint, choose a safe way for OBS to access the object, and test the complete playback and stream path.
What you need to set up
- An Akamai Cloud Object Storage bucket containing the video you want to play.
- The bucket’s endpoint and the object’s exact URL or a plan to stage the file locally.
- OBS Studio, with VLC installed if you plan to use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist.
- A YouTube channel configured to start a livestream and its stream key. Keep the key private.
Akamai describes Object Storage as an Amazon S3-compatible storage service that supports tools and services built on the S3 API. Its documentation lists more than 20 regions globally; that is the provider’s overview figure, not an independent comparison of availability or performance. Akamai Cloud Object Storage documentation
Find the correct bucket endpoint
Use the endpoint for your bucket
Create or select a bucket in the region you intend to use. Then retrieve its hostname from Cloud Manager or the API. Object Storage hostnames vary by region and endpoint type, so do not copy an endpoint from an unrelated tutorial. Check that the hostname, bucket, and object path all refer to the same bucket and region. Akamai Cloud bucket and endpoint guidance
Upload the video
Upload through a method that suits your workflow. Akamai documents Cloud Manager, Linode CLI, s3cmd, and Cyberduck for managing buckets and objects. Object Storage management options Keep the object’s name and path handy; you will need the exact location when configuring playback.

Choose how OBS will access the object
Objects are private by default. A URL alone does not grant an unauthenticated player permission to read a private object. Decide on access before adding the media source:
- Public-readable object: Use this only if making that video publicly retrievable is acceptable. Anyone who obtains the URL may be able to access it, so do not use public access for confidential or restricted footage.
- Temporary signed URL: This can grant time-limited access, but use it only if the playback client can request the URL and the link remains valid for the intended playback period. A signed URL is itself a bearer link; protect it accordingly.
- Authenticated S3-compatible workflow or local staging: If OBS or VLC cannot securely authenticate to the bucket, use an S3-capable tool to download or sync the file to the streaming computer, then play the local copy.
Do not paste an access secret into a scene URL, browser overlay, screen share, or anything visible on stream. Akamai warns that the Secret Key is shown only once when created and cannot be viewed again after that window is closed. Store it securely and use the narrowest permissions appropriate to the task. Add the video or playlist in OBS
For one video
- Open OBS and select the scene that should carry the video, or create a scene for it.
- In Sources, select + and choose Media Source.
- For a file staged on the computer, enable the option to locate a local file and choose the video. Configure looping if you want the clip to repeat; verify the source’s playback behavior in the preview.
- If you are trying a remote object URL, enter the URL only when the object is readable by the client without exposing credentials. Test whether OBS can retrieve and decode that specific file. OBS documents Media Source primarily as a local-file source; its documentation does not guarantee playback from every object-storage URL, permission configuration, or codec.
- Check the preview, audio, and loop behavior before continuing.
For an ordered or looping playlist
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS; the VLC Video source is available only when VLC is installed.
- In Sources, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Add the files in the order you want them played. Use local staged files for the most straightforward setup, or test remote URLs individually before relying on them in a playlist.
- Set playlist and looping options as needed, then observe a complete transition between at least two items. Confirm that audio levels and source visibility behave as intended.
OBS documents Media Source and VLC Video source separately. Its source documentation describes network caching but does not certify every remote storage URL or media format, so the only dependable check for a particular setup is a test with the actual object, access method, and file. Send the OBS program to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the livestream and copy its stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your broadcast.
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and connect your account or enter the server and stream key using the fields shown in your OBS version.
- In Settings → Output, choose an encoder and output settings your computer and connection can sustain. Set the resolution and frame rate under Settings → Video. There is no single bitrate or resolution that fits every channel, upload connection, encoder, and YouTube event; use the current recommendations shown in YouTube Studio for your event, then check OBS’s dropped frames and encoding status during a test.
- Start with an unlisted or private test if that option is available for your event. Start streaming in OBS, confirm that YouTube receives the program, and watch playback long enough to catch buffering, audio problems, source transitions, and any loop or playlist failure.
- Stop the test and correct any problems before starting the public broadcast.
OBS’s Quick Start recommends testing for a few minutes before the first stream. Its setup documentation covers scenes, sources, output, and test streaming. OBS Quick Start Guide

Check rights and YouTube eligibility before broadcasting
Having a video in your bucket does not establish that you have the rights to livestream it. Confirm permission for the footage, music, narration, images, and any third-party material in the recording. A live test should also use material you are authorized to broadcast. YouTube account and livestream eligibility rules can change; check the requirements displayed for your channel in YouTube Studio before scheduling a public stream. Replaying recorded material as a live program does not, by itself, make it original or guarantee monetization eligibility.
Direct URL playback or a local copy?
| Route | What to verify | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Play from an object URL | The object grants the needed read access; OBS or VLC can retrieve the exact URL and decode the file; any signed link lasts long enough. | Avoids a separate local copy, but remote access, startup, and rebuffer behavior depend on the actual client, object permissions, file, and network. Compatibility is not guaranteed by OBS’s documentation. |
| Download or sync, then play locally | The full file is present and playable on the streaming computer; the selected OBS source points to that local file. | Adds a download or sync step and uses local storage, but avoids relying on OBS to authenticate to or continuously fetch the object URL. |
Choose based on whether access can be handled without exposing credentials, whether the client decodes the actual file, your network conditions, playlist needs, and whether a local copy is a useful fallback. Test the selected route rather than assuming either will perform reliably.

Troubleshoot common failures
OBS reports an error or shows a blank source
- Likely cause: The object is private, the endpoint or object path is wrong, or the client cannot authenticate. Fix: Recheck the bucket’s endpoint and exact object path. Confirm the intended access method in a browser or compatible S3 client, without publishing credentials. If remote playback remains unsupported, stage the file locally.
- Likely cause: The file or codec is not handled as expected. Fix: Test the same file locally in the chosen OBS source and confirm it plays before troubleshooting the bucket connection.
Playback starts but stalls or buffers
- Likely cause: The remote fetch or the creator’s network cannot sustain playback. Fix: Test a local staged copy under the same OBS scene. Compare startup and playback behavior, and use the local route if it is more dependable for your connection.
- Likely cause: The signed URL expires during playback. Fix: Use a link with an appropriate validity period, or choose a different access workflow that does not expose a secret key.
YouTube does not receive a stable stream
- Likely cause: A stream-key, output, or connection issue rather than a bucket issue. Fix: Recheck the stream service and key in OBS, review the output status, and run another short test before going live.
- Likely cause: The video plays in OBS but YouTube playback has no audio or drops frames. Fix: Check the OBS audio mixer and encoding or dropped-frame status, then adjust settings to match your computer, connection, and the current YouTube event guidance.
Access key lost or exposed
Akamai says the Secret Key cannot be viewed again after its creation window closes. If you no longer have it, create a replacement key and update the authorized tool; if it was exposed, revoke or rotate it promptly. Do not put the replacement in a scene URL or any on-screen source.
What Object Storage does—and does not—guarantee
Akamai says successful writes or updates are followed by reads that return the latest version. That consistency statement is not a guarantee of uninterrupted video delivery, a particular bitrate or latency, or livestream reliability. YouTube does not fetch the video directly from the bucket in this workflow: OBS reads or plays the asset and sends its composed output to YouTube.
