A Google Cloud Compute Engine VM can keep an encoder running after your personal computer is off, but the VM does not turn a video file into a livestream by itself. You must make the recording available to the VM, configure encoder software to send it to a YouTube Live event over RTMPS, and monitor both the encoder and the event. YouTube and Google document those parts separately; neither provides a verified, universal command sequence for looping a video continuously.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check eligibility before creating a VM. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- A Google Cloud project with billing enabled, plus a Compute Engine VM sized for the encoder settings you choose.
- An encoder configured to read your video and send a live feed to YouTube. A VM is only the host; it does not automatically loop or stream a file.
- A video file accessible to the encoder, a YouTube Live event, and a way to check the stream preview and health.
Set up the Google Cloud VM and YouTube stream
1. Confirm live-streaming eligibility
Verify the channel and confirm there are no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days before provisioning the machine. YouTube’s encoder-based workflow requires you to create or select a live event, then connect an encoder using the event’s stream settings. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
2. Create and start a Compute Engine instance
Follow Google’s instructions to create and start a VM instance. Select a region, operating system, machine type, disk, and network configuration appropriate to your setup. There is no universally correct machine type for this workload: resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoding method affect CPU and network needs. Google notes that outbound bandwidth limits depend on machine type and configuration, so check the limits for your selected instance in its documentation at Compute Engine network bandwidth.
Keep access to the VM appropriately secured and ensure the encoder can run in the environment you choose. The available guidance does not establish a tested VM configuration for a particular video or encoder, so validate your chosen setup with a test stream rather than assuming a small instance will handle it.

3. Make the recording available and choose looping behavior
Provide the prerecorded video to the encoder—for example, by placing it on storage the VM can access. Then configure the encoder software to read and repeat the file for as long as the broadcast should continue. The official Google and YouTube pages cited here do not prescribe a storage method or looping command. Choose an encoder and verify its file-loop behavior and restart handling in that software’s own documentation before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
4. Create the YouTube Live event and configure the encoder
In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, then use the encoder workflow to create or select an event and obtain its stream settings. Add the stream URL and key to your encoder, keep the key private, and send the feed using RTMPS. YouTube says it recommends RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP. Follow the current YouTube encoder live-streaming settings when configuring the encoder.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s current settings table; make sure the VM’s CPU and sustained outbound connection can handle the selected encode. Exact bitrate recommendations vary by output settings, so consult the linked guidance rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream.
5. Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Start the encoder in test/preview mode or prepare the event according to YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- Open the event’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming stream preview. Confirm the video and audio are correct before making the stream public.
- Start the live broadcast when the preview and event settings are ready. Check that the event is accessible to its intended audience.
- Monitor video and audio quality, encoder status, VM health, file access, and network conditions while the stream runs. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the feed; see its general live-streaming guidance.
What must stay healthy for a 24/7 stream
A continuous broadcast depends on several pieces working together: the VM must remain available, the encoder process must keep running, the file must remain accessible, the network must sustain the outgoing feed, and the YouTube event must remain active. Google’s and YouTube’s cited instructions do not promise uninterrupted availability or prescribe a specific process supervisor, restart policy, or failover design. Treat those as operational choices: determine how you will detect a stopped encoder, recover access to the source file, and restart or replace a failed VM, then test those procedures before depending on the stream.

Keep the stream key private, and review YouTube’s policies for the material you broadcast. Having a file available to stream does not grant rights to its music, footage, or other content. A continuous or repetitive format also does not exempt a channel from YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules; review the policies that apply to your content and intended use before going live.
Estimate the VM, storage, and network cost
Google Cloud charges depend on the VM, storage, networking, and configuration you actually use. The current Compute Engine product page lists an e2-micro VM, up to 30 GB of standard persistent disk, and up to 1 GB of monthly outbound transfer in its free tier. These listed allowances are not a forecast that a continuously running encoder will be free. Google’s current Free Program documentation describes a $300 trial credit for eligible new users, valid for 90 days; eligibility and usage restrictions apply, and resources stop when the trial billing account closes unless it is upgraded. Free Tier limits are monthly, and usage beyond them on a paid billing account is billed at standard rates. Check the terms and current figures at Google Cloud Free Program and Compute Engine.

Estimate your own setup using Google’s pricing calculator, selecting the region and configuration you intend to run. Include VM runtime, disk, outbound network transfer, and any other resources used. Google Cloud pricing varies with those choices, so there is no fixed monthly bill established for this use case.
For a rough traffic estimate, multiply the encoded bitrate by the hours streamed. For example, a bitrate expressed in bits per second multiplied by stream duration gives the approximate encoded data sent before protocol overhead. This is a planning calculation, not a quoted Google or YouTube allowance. Compare the resulting continuous outbound traffic with the applicable VM bandwidth limits and Google Cloud billing terms.

Troubleshooting common failures
YouTube does not accept the stream
- Check channel eligibility: confirm verification and the absence of a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- Check the event and key: confirm the encoder is using the correct event’s stream URL and key, and that the key has not been mistyped or exposed.
- Check transport and encoder settings: use RTMPS and settings supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
The preview is blank, silent, or poor quality
- Confirm the encoder can open the source file and is sending both the intended video and audio tracks.
- Check codec, constant bitrate mode, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s current settings guidance.
- Reduce the output quality if the VM cannot encode reliably or sustain the outbound bitrate, then retest in Live Control Room.
The stream stops after running for a while
- Check whether the VM is still running and whether the encoder process exited, stalled, or lost access to the video.
- Check outbound connectivity and the machine type’s applicable bandwidth limits.
- Inspect the YouTube event’s status and encoder health, then restart the feed using your tested recovery procedure. The official guidance cited here does not guarantee automatic recovery for a self-managed VM.
