First test the FFmpeg command manually, protect the stream key, then schedule the script and confirm the stream is healthy in YouTube Live Control Room.
What cron can—and cannot—do
Cron runs commands on a schedule. It does not track which FFmpeg process belongs to your stream or decide whether that process has failed. Put process identification, shutdown, restart, and logging in a script, and target only the intended FFmpeg instance. A broad command that kills every FFmpeg process can interrupt unrelated work.
A scheduled restart is useful when you deliberately want a process restarted at a fixed time. It is not the same as recovering immediately from a dropped network connection or restarting only when FFmpeg exits. FFmpeg’s FIFO output mechanism can attempt recovery from temporary network-output failures; cron provides time-based execution. Choose according to the failure you need to handle.

Open YouTube Live Control Room and get the current stream URL and stream key for the stream. YouTube’s instructions for setting up an encoder are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Use RTMPS when supported by your encoder and configuration; check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates for protocol and stream-setting guidance.

-
Treat the stream key like a credential. Store it in a protected configuration file or other private location, not in a public script, shared repository, or diagnostic log. If you reset the key, update the FFmpeg configuration to use the new one.
-
Run the exact FFmpeg command manually before scheduling it. Use absolute paths for FFmpeg and file inputs so the command does not depend on cron’s limited environment or current directory. Confirm that your output protocol and encoder settings match the YouTube stream configuration.

Build a restart script that targets one stream
The exact process-management method depends on your Linux distribution and deployment. A PID file, a service manager, or a carefully constrained process match may be appropriate; there is no single universal restart script. The script should stop the intended process cleanly, wait for it to exit, launch the tested command again, and append useful diagnostic output to a log.
- Use a dedicated service account or otherwise limit which user can read the stream-key configuration.
- Use absolute paths for the FFmpeg executable, inputs, configuration, and log.
- Match the process specifically to this stream; do not use an unrestricted kill command against all FFmpeg processes.
- Send script output and FFmpeg diagnostics to a protected log, but do not print the stream key into that log.
- Make the script executable and test it as the same account that will run the cron job.
Because cron supplies a minimal environment, define any required environment variables in the script and avoid relying on interactive shell settings. Verify permissions on the script, its configuration, input files, and log directory.

Schedule the restart with cron
Edit the crontab for the account that should run the stream. A five-field entry such as this runs a script daily at 03:00 according to the cron environment’s local time:
0 3 * * * /absolute/path/restart-stream.sh
Replace the path and time with your actual choices. Cron checks entries each minute; day-of-month and day-of-week matching behavior can affect schedules that specify both fields. Check the manual for the cron implementation on your system. Account for the machine’s time zone and daylight-saving changes if the restart must occur at a particular wall-clock time.
Save the crontab, then test the script directly and inspect its log before relying on the schedule. A successful cron invocation only establishes that the command ran; it does not prove that FFmpeg connected to YouTube or that viewers can see the stream.
Verify the stream and diagnose failures
After a scheduled restart, check the script and FFmpeg logs, then open YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the encoder, inspect the preview and stream health, and verify playback where appropriate. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring the stream; see its stream settings and quality guidance and live-streaming tips.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The script works in a terminal but not from cron | Relative paths, missing environment variables, different user, or file permissions | Use absolute paths, define needed environment variables, and run under the cron account while checking permissions and logs. |
| FFmpeg starts but YouTube receives no stream | Incorrect server URL or key, unsupported protocol configuration, or mismatched output settings | Confirm the current URL and key in Live Control Room, update configuration after a key reset, and compare the output protocol and encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance. |
| The restart interrupts another FFmpeg job | The script matches or kills FFmpeg too broadly | Restrict process management to the specific stream instance; consider a dedicated service account or supervisor. |
| A file-based stream is not paced as expected | Real-time pacing was omitted or applied in the wrong situation | For file input, consider -re when real-time pacing is needed. Do not use that advice indiscriminately for live capture or network input. |
| A brief network failure still disrupts output between scheduled restarts | A fixed-time cron restart is not immediate network recovery | Consider FFmpeg’s FIFO output recovery options for temporary network-output failures, or use process supervision for process failures. Test the chosen behavior. |
| The cron time shifts or does not match the intended local hour | The schedule follows the system’s cron time zone and calendar rules | Check the system time zone, cron implementation, and daylight-saving behavior; adjust the schedule to the deployment’s needs. |
Choose cron, output recovery, or cloud hosting for the failure you have
- Use cron when you want a planned restart at a fixed time and can accept the interruption it causes.
- Use output recovery when the FFmpeg process remains active but a temporary network-output problem is the concern; it addresses a different condition from restarting the whole process.
- Use process supervision when you need a process restarted after exit rather than on a clock. Configure and test the supervisor for your Linux distribution.
- Use a cloud streaming service when you do not want a home computer or connection to be part of the stream path.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera capture. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly service costs $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
