A 24/7 YouTube livestream can contribute to the 4,000 watch-hour requirement only when its watch time is eligible: the stream must be public, its replay must be converted to a public video on demand (VOD), and the archive must not be deleted. For the full YouTube Partner Program (YPP) ad-revenue eligibility route, you also need 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months. Hitting those numbers starts a channel review; it does not guarantee acceptance.
Do livestream hours count toward YouTube monetization?
They can, but being live for a long time is not enough. YouTube’s eligibility overview counts qualified watch hours from public long-form videos and excludes livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD. Keep the event public and confirm that YouTube has made the replay available as a public archive. YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility lists these conditions.
Qualified watch time measures how long eligible viewers actually watch; it is not the broadcast’s runtime or its concurrent-viewer count. A 24-hour broadcast does not automatically produce 24 watch hours. The result depends on eligible viewing, and YouTube’s counter—not the stream schedule—is what matters.
Which YouTube eligibility route uses 4,000 hours?
YouTube describes the 4,000-hour threshold as one route to full YPP eligibility. Its alternative full route uses qualified Shorts views instead. The windows and metrics differ:

Check progress in YouTube Studio’s Earn area rather than estimating from the total length of your broadcasts. YouTube says eligible creators can apply there; the channel then goes through review. The requirements above are from YouTube’s eligibility and monetization pages, accessed October 3, 2026.
Set up a livestream strategy that can produce eligible watch time
1. Give viewers a reason to stay
Start with a format people have a genuine reason to watch over time. A continuous schedule does not make content valuable by itself, and operating around the clock is not a shortcut to eligibility. Plan programming that fits your documentary channel and audience, and make the channel’s purpose clear.

2. Make the live event public
When setting up the stream, choose public visibility if you intend its replay watch time to qualify. Unlisted and private videos are excluded from the 4,000-hour path. Do not treat a private test or an unlisted broadcast as qualifying public viewing.
3. Confirm the replay becomes a public VOD
After a broadcast ends—or after a restart—check YouTube Studio to confirm the archive is available as a public video. YouTube explicitly excludes livestreams that are not converted to VOD. Protect the qualifying archive: deleting or unlisting it removes it from the eligible pool, and privacy changes or deletion can affect an application’s status.

4. Monitor eligible progress in Studio
Use the Earn area to follow YouTube’s eligibility counter. Keep the rolling window in mind: hours can stop counting when they fall outside the most recent 12 months. Do not infer eligibility from the broadcast duration, viewer peak, total channel watch time, or a third-party estimate.
5. Prepare the whole channel for review
Meeting the threshold leads to a standard review, not automatic approval. YouTube assesses the channel as a whole. Reviewers may consider its main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, videos contributing the largest share of watch time, metadata, and About section. Keep the stream and the rest of the channel consistent with original, authentic work.

What watch time does not count toward the 4,000 hours?
- Unlisted, private, or deleted videos: These are not eligible public watch hours.
- Live archives that are not converted to VOD: Their livestream watch time is excluded.
- Shorts Feed watch time: It does not contribute to the 4,000-hour route, though qualified Shorts views are part of a separate eligibility route.
- Ad-campaign watch time: Watch time generated through paid ad campaigns does not count toward YPP eligibility. YouTube distinguishes this from eligible organic follow-on viewing.

There is no guarantee. YouTube’s monetization policies say content should be original and authentic, not mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative. A strategy built around repeated material made solely to obtain views creates policy risk, even if a counter reaches the numerical threshold. Make the content itself worth watching and ensure you have the rights to use it; a public VOD can satisfy a format condition without satisfying every channel policy.

Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies before building a schedule around recurring or looped material. The page includes a policy update dated March 10, 2025. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance discusses encoder-based setup, but the eligibility threshold does not require a particular encoder or product. Technical continuity can help keep a broadcast available; it cannot create qualifying viewer watch time by itself.
Common mistakes and fixes

What happens after eligibility?
Apply from the Earn area when YouTube shows that the channel is eligible. YouTube reviews the channel for policy compliance; reaching the threshold alone is not acceptance. If accepted, creators may enable Watch Page ads for live streams after accepting the applicable terms and modules. YouTube also lists channel memberships and Super Chat/Super Stickers among live-stream revenue features. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
YouTube reported that creators who chose live automatic mid-roll ads saw an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not turn them on. YouTube says that comparison averaged across 207 countries and was measured in January 2024. This is a revenue comparison for monetized channels, not a way to earn eligibility watch hours or a forecast for an individual channel.
