Review the captions against the video after saving and correct any text or timing errors.
Upload an SRT file in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Subtitles from the left menu, then choose the video you want to caption.
- Select Add language and choose the language used in the SRT file.
- In the Subtitles row for that language, select Add.
- Choose Upload file.
- Choose With timing if the SRT already has synchronized timestamps. Choose Without timing if the text is ready but timings still need to be created.
- Select the SRT file and choose Save.
YouTube also allows subtitles to be added during video upload. If Studio’s labels differ from these steps, return to the video’s Subtitles section and use the file-upload option for the intended language.
Prepare the SRT file
YouTube supports basic SubRip (.srt) files in plain UTF-8. A basic caption entry contains a sequence number, start and end timestamps, and the caption text. Keep the file as plain text: SRT styling or markup is not recognized. For a non-English caption track, YouTube recommends UTF-8 encoding to improve display accuracy.
YouTube Help describes subtitle and caption files as containing both “the text of what is said in the video” and timestamps indicating when each line should appear. If your file has that timing information, upload it using With timing.

If you do not have usable timestamps
Upload text without timing
If you already have the transcript but still need to set display times, choose Without timing in the upload flow. YouTube will let you work with the text and create its timing in Studio.
Use transcript auto-sync
You can provide transcript text and let YouTube synchronize it to the video. The transcript must be in the spoken language, and that language must be supported by YouTube speech recognition. YouTube says this works best with clear speech and good audio in videos under an hour; it does not recommend this approach for videos longer than an hour or with poor audio quality.

Enter captions manually
If you do not have a timed SRT or a transcript suitable for auto-sync, enter captions manually in Studio and set their timing there.
Review and fix captions after uploading
Play the video with the uploaded subtitle track and check both the words and when each line appears. In Studio, you can edit caption text and timestamps. You can also download the caption file, revise it in a plain-text editor, and upload the corrected file again. YouTube does not state a guaranteed processing time for a normal SRT upload, so check the video’s Subtitles page rather than relying on a fixed wait time.
