1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse YouTube Data API’s videos.insert method with uploadType=resumable. Save the session URI returned by the API, upload the video to that URI, and—if the connection fails—query the session for the last confirmed byte before continuing. This is a developer workflow for uploading an existing video file, not instructions for uploading through YouTube Studio.
What you need before starting
- A Google Cloud project with the YouTube Data API enabled and credentials authorized to upload videos.
- The video file’s exact byte length and MIME type, such as
video/mp4. - A way to preserve the session URI securely until the upload completes. You need it to transfer the media and recover from an interruption.
Google’s videos.insert method reference lists a maximum file size of 256 GB and accepts video/* or application/octet-stream. The method reference also warns that uploads from unverified API projects created after July 28, 2020 are restricted to private viewing until the project passes an audit.
Start a resumable upload session
- Choose the resource parts. Make an authenticated POST request to
https://www.googleapis.com/upload/youtube/v3/videos?uploadType=resumable&part=snippet,status. Thepartparameter names the resource parts you are setting or want returned. Use the parts appropriate to your metadata and status settings. - Send the metadata and upload headers. Include
Authorization: Bearer ACCESS_TOKEN,Content-Type: application/json; charset=UTF-8,X-Upload-Content-Length: TOTAL_LENGTH, andX-Upload-Content-Type: MIME_TYPE. The JSON request body is the video resource, for example:{ "snippet": { "title": "Documentary title", "description": "Video description", "categoryId": "22" }, "status": { "privacyStatus": "private" } }Replace the example metadata and privacy setting with values appropriate to your upload. The declared length must match the file’s actual size, and the declared media type must match the file you send.
- Store the session URI. A successful initiation response includes a
Locationheader. Save its full value; it is the upload-session URI for the next requests. Treat it as sensitive, since possession of it is necessary to continue the transfer.
Transfer the video file
Send an authenticated PUT request to the saved session URI. For a single-request transfer, send the whole binary file and set Content-Type to the file’s MIME type and Content-Length to its exact byte length. A successful completed upload returns HTTP 201 and the created video resource.

Google’s guide, Resumable Uploads | YouTube Data API, says: “You can upload videos more reliably by using the resumable upload protocol for Google APIs.” Resumability means a failed transfer need not force you to start blindly from zero: ask the session which bytes were accepted, then continue at the reported offset.
Recover after a dropped connection
- Query the session. Send an empty PUT to the saved session URI with
Content-Range: bytes */TOTAL_LENGTH, whereTOTAL_LENGTHis the full file size in bytes. - Read the response. A
308 Resume Incompleteresponse means the upload is not finished. If it includes aRangeheader such asbytes=0-524287, the server has confirmed receipt through byte524287. - Continue at the next byte. Start the next media request at byte
524288in that example. Send only the remaining file bytes and set the correspondingContent-Range, such asbytes 524288-1048575/TOTAL_LENGTHfor a request covering that inclusive range. - Repeat status checks when needed. A request can be interrupted after some bytes have arrived. Do not assume that none or all of a failed request reached YouTube; query the session and use its reported range before sending more data.
If the session URI has expired, the status request can return HTTP 404. Initiate a new resumable session and upload the file again from the beginning. Session URIs do not remain valid indefinitely, so begin the transfer soon after receiving one and resume soon after an interruption.

Choose between a single transfer and chunks
| Approach | Request overhead | Progress visibility | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| One media request | Lower: the file is sent in one PUT. | Progress can be less granular at the protocol-request level. | A reliable connection and a client that can monitor the transfer. |
| Multiple chunks | Higher: each chunk adds a request and associated overhead. | Useful when you need to display progress, particularly on an unstable connection. | A connection where smaller recoverable transfers or visible progress matter more than request efficiency. |
Google says chunking is usually unnecessary and can reduce performance because it adds requests. If you choose chunks, every chunk except the final one must be a multiple of 256 KB, and use the same chunk size for each request other than the final chunk. Larger chunks mean fewer requests and can be more efficient on a reliable connection; smaller chunks can make recovery more manageable on an unreliable one. There is no universally best chunk size.
Retry transient server errors
The resumable-upload guide identifies HTTP 500, 502, 503, and 504 as server errors that can be retried. Use exponential backoff rather than sending requests continuously. If the response includes Retry-After, wait for the specified interval before retrying. For an uncertain media request, check session status first so the next transfer begins at the server-confirmed offset.

Check file, visibility, and quota limits
File size and media type
The method reference lists a 256 GB maximum and supports video/* and application/octet-stream. Confirm that the file fits the limit and that the media headers describe the bytes being uploaded.
Public visibility is not guaranteed for every API project
For API projects created after July 28, 2020 that have not passed YouTube’s audit, videos uploaded through videos.insert are restricted to private viewing. Check the project’s verification status before designing a workflow that expects immediate public availability.

Quota is project-specific and changing
The current videos.insert reference describes 100 calls per day in the Video Uploads quota bucket. The YouTube Data API overview lists default allocations of 100 videos.insert calls and 100 search.list calls, plus 10,000 units per day for other endpoints. Google’s revision history says granular quota buckets for videos.insert and search.list began June 1, 2026. These pages describe allocations in different contexts; check the current quota shown for your own project in Google Cloud Console rather than assuming one number applies universally or permanently.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The initiation request is rejected: Check that the API is enabled, the access token is valid and authorized, the
partparameter is appropriate, and the JSON body is valid. - The media request fails with a size or type issue: Recheck
X-Upload-Content-Length,Content-Length,X-Upload-Content-Type, andContent-Typeagainst the actual file. Confirm the file is within the documented maximum. - A retry appears to duplicate or skip bytes: Do not resend based on an assumed offset. Query the session with the empty PUT and continue after the last byte in the server’s
Rangeheader. - The status request returns 404: The session URI may have expired. Start a new session and retransmit the file from the beginning.
- Repeated 5xx responses occur: Apply exponential backoff and respect
Retry-Afterwhen present. Check session status before resuming media transfer. - The uploaded video is private when public visibility was expected: Check whether the API project is subject to YouTube’s verification and audit restriction.
- Uploads stop after the daily allowance: Inspect the project’s current quota bucket and usage in Google Cloud Console; published defaults and quota arrangements can change.
Or let it run in the cloud
Resumable upload moves a file to YouTube reliably; it does not keep a YouTube channel broadcasting that video around the clock. For a prerecorded video or playlist that should run as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on.
