How to Turn Off YouTube Auto-Dubbing and Restore the Original Audio

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If YouTube is playing a translated voice instead of the speaker’s real voice, open the video’s Settings menu, choose Audio track, and select Original or the source language. That fixes the current video. If you own the channel, the separate control is in YouTube Studio: turn off Allow automatic dubbing.

YouTube’s current viewer help pages do not document a universal switch that permanently disables every automatic dub for every video. Viewers can choose the original track per video and add preferred languages to make original audio more likely. Creators have a channel-wide off switch and tools for managing dubs that already exist.

If you are watching someone else’s video

Restore the original audio on a computer

  1. Open the video on YouTube.
  2. Click the Settings gear in the player.
  3. Select Audio track.
  4. Choose Original or the source language.

These controls are documented in YouTube’s preferred-language and audio-track help.

Restore it in the Android app

  1. Open the video in the YouTube app.
  2. Tap the Settings gear.
  3. Tap Audio track.
  4. Select the original language.

See YouTube’s Android instructions.

Restore it on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the video.
  2. Tap the Settings gear.
  3. Choose Audio track.
  4. Select the original language.

The selector appears only when alternate audio tracks are available, so its absence does not necessarily indicate a problem. YouTube’s iOS guidance is available at this help page.

How to recognize an automatic dub

YouTube labels videos with automatically generated tracks as auto-dubbed in the video description. Multiple choices under Settings → Audio track are another sign that alternate audio exists. Automatic dubbing is not the same as subtitles, translated titles, or a creator’s own recorded language track.

Make original audio the default for languages you understand

Preferred-language settings are the strongest documented viewer-side way to influence future playback. YouTube says videos whose original audio is in one of your preferred languages will default to the original audio rather than a translated track. This is not a universal kill switch: it does not guarantee that every dub will disappear or that every device will select the same track.

Desktop

  1. Click your profile picture.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Playback & Performance.
  4. Under Language, click Add or edit languages.
  5. Select the languages you understand or want to hear in their original form.
  6. Click Confirm.

The setting is separate from YouTube’s interface language and location settings; it does not change recommendations or search results. The official instructions are at YouTube Help.

Manage dubs that were already created

Turning off automatic dubbing controls future generation or publication; it does not automatically remove every existing track. On desktop Studio:

  1. Open Content and select the video.
  2. Open Languages.
  3. Find the language in the Audio column.
  4. Choose Unpublish or Delete.
  • Unpublish hides the dub from viewers while preserving a possible republish option.
  • Delete permanently removes the dub and it cannot be republished.

These management options are described in YouTube’s automatic-dubbing help.

Automatic dubbing versus creator-uploaded multilingual audio

Automatic dubbing is generated by YouTube for eligible videos. Multi-language audio is a track the creator records or commissions and uploads themselves. Turning off automatic dubbing does not remove a manually uploaded track. If an automatic dub already exists for a language, the creator must delete it before uploading a replacement in that language. See Add multi-language features to your videos.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Why the fix may not work

There is no Audio track option

  • The video may have only one audio track.
  • Check the description for the auto-dubbed label.
  • Update the YouTube app and try again.
  • Try YouTube in a desktop browser.
  • If language preferences seem ignored, sign out and back in.
  • Remember that changing the app’s display language is not the same as setting preferred audio languages.

These are practical troubleshooting steps, not guarantees. TV apps, Shorts, embedded players, and mobile builds can expose different controls, and YouTube rolls features out gradually.

The video is still dubbed after you changed a setting

You may have changed the track on another video, the creator may still have an existing dub published, or the track may be a manually uploaded multilingual recording. Preferred languages influence default selection but do not promise that every alternate track will be removed.

What automatic dubbing can and cannot do

Automatic dubbing is enabled by default for eligible creators, although availability varies by channel and rollout. YouTube can generate tracks for new uploads and, over time, for some previously published videos. Videos longer than 120 minutes may be ineligible; other exclusions include little or no speech, unsupported source languages, failed language detection, speech that is too fast, and certain Content ID claims.

YouTube warns that generated tracks can contain errors with pronunciation, accents, dialects, background noise, proper names, idioms, jargon, and voice matching. Some languages support Expressive Speech, which attempts to reproduce pitch and intonation, and YouTube has documented an experimental Lip sync feature for some channels, languages, and qualifying videos. Availability can change; details are maintained on YouTube’s automatic-dubbing page.

Choosing the right approach

Option What it does Limitation
Select Original Restores the current video immediately Usually a per-video action
Add preferred languages Makes original audio more likely for selected source languages Not documented as a universal off switch
Change app language Changes interface language Does not directly disable dubbing
Use captions Keeps the original voice while showing translated text Captions may be unavailable or inaccurate
Browser extension or workaround May automate playback preferences Third-party tools can break after updates and create privacy or security risks

For creators, disabling automatic dubbing preserves control over voice and translation but may reduce international reach. Publish manually is a middle ground: dubs can be reviewed before publication. Manual uploads provide the most control but require translation, recording, editing, and file preparation.

The Bottom Line

As a viewer, choose Settings → Audio track → Original and add preferred languages to influence future playback. As a creator, use YouTube Studio’s Allow automatic dubbing switch, then unpublish or delete existing tracks separately if needed.
