In the Spotify desktop app on Windows 11, select the three-dot menu → File → Offline Mode. If Offline Mode is enabled, select it once to turn it off, then give Spotify a moment to reconnect. Spotify’s Windows support instructions use this menu path; labels or placement may vary slightly between app versions.
Turn off Spotify Offline Mode in Windows 11
- Open the Spotify desktop app—not Spotify in a browser.
- Select the three-dot menu in the upper-left corner.
- Open File.
- Select Offline Mode if it is enabled. It may appear checked or otherwise selected; the exact indicator can vary.
- Wait for Spotify to reconnect, then try playing a song you have not downloaded.
Turning the setting off lets Spotify use the internet again, but it does not itself download music. The setting is in Spotify, separate from Windows 11 Airplane mode, Wi-Fi, VPN, or firewall controls.
Check that Spotify is back online
- Return to File → Offline Mode and check that the option no longer appears selected.
- Search for a track or album you have not saved for offline listening and try to play it.
- Check whether online content and recent playlist changes load or sync.
Spotify says content that has not been downloaded may appear grayed out when the app is offline. If Offline Mode is off but online tracks still will not load, the toggle may not be the underlying problem.

Work through these checks in order. A Wi-Fi connection icon does not necessarily mean Spotify can reach the internet.

- Test the connection. Open a website or another internet-dependent app. If those fail too, troubleshoot the Windows connection before changing Spotify settings.
- Reconnect Wi-Fi. Open Windows network controls, turn Wi-Fi off, wait about 30 seconds, then turn it back on. If other devices are also offline, restart the router.
- Try another network. A phone hotspot can help distinguish a problem with your usual network from one affecting the app or device.
- Check network restrictions. Temporarily test whether a VPN or proxy is involved. A school, workplace, or public network may restrict Spotify; contact its administrator if needed.
- Check firewall or security software. Make sure Spotify is allowed to connect. Do not leave your firewall or antivirus disabled as a workaround. Spotify’s offline troubleshooting guide also recommends checking network restrictions and firewall permissions.
- Restart Spotify completely. Quit the app, reopen it, and check the Offline Mode menu again. If Spotify allows it, sign out and back in.
- Update the app. Update it through the Microsoft Store if that is where you installed it, or through Spotify’s official installation channel.
- Try Spotify in a browser. If the Web Player works while the Windows app does not, the issue is more likely specific to the desktop app or how security software handles it. The Web Player is a temporary workaround, not a repair.
- Consider resetting app data. Some Spotify desktop builds offer a reset option under three-dot menu → Help → Troubleshooting → Reset App Data and Restart. This is a version-dependent fallback, not a guaranteed fix; it may sign you out or remove cached content.
- Reinstall only as a last resort. Local cache or downloads may need to be restored, so do not assume they will be preserved.
If websites and other apps also cannot connect, Microsoft recommends using the Windows 11 Get Help network troubleshooter and its Wi-Fi diagnostics. Reserve a Windows network reset for persistent, broader connection problems: it can remove and recreate network configuration.
Why Spotify songs may be grayed out
Offline Mode and downloaded music are related but different. Offline Mode tells Spotify to rely on content already available on the device rather than normal online playback and syncing. Undownloaded tracks may therefore be unavailable or grayed out. Turning Offline Mode off does not automatically download every song or playlist, and it does not delete existing downloads.

Spotify describes offline listening as playing content saved to a device; its offline-download information explains the Premium download feature. You do not need Premium to find or switch off the Offline Mode setting itself.

- Make sure the app is fully open, then select the three-dot menu in the upper-left.
- Confirm you are in the Windows desktop app. Spotify’s Web Player, phone apps, and Mac app have different interfaces.
- Maximize the window if the layout is compressed, then close and reopen Spotify and check again.
- Spotify builds from the Microsoft Store and its own installer can differ slightly. Look under File rather than relying on mobile instructions such as a path through Settings.
Spotify’s current Windows guidance places the control under File; community reports also describe it under three dots → File → Offline Mode. If your menu differs, check that Spotify is updated before trying more disruptive fixes.

When to leave Offline Mode on
Leave it enabled if you intentionally want Spotify to use only content available offline. Turn it off to browse, search, stream, sync playlists, or play tracks that are not downloaded. Spotify’s offline downloads require reconnecting periodically to keep saved content active; that is separate from disabling the mode.
