To turn off closed captions on Amazon Prime Video, play the movie or episode, open the playback controls, select Closed Caption or Subtitles, and choose Off or None. On TVs and streaming devices, you may need to press Enter or a similar remote button first. Roku and Apple TV can use device-specific caption settings.
Turn off closed captions in Prime Video
To turn off closed captions on Amazon Prime, start playing the movie or show, open the playback controls, select the Closed Caption or Subtitles icon, and choose the option that disables captions. The control is usually inside the video player—not on the title’s information page.
Browser, phone, or tablet
- Open Prime Video and start the movie or episode.
- Tap the video, or move your pointer over it, to display the playback controls.
- Select the Closed Caption or Subtitles icon.
- Choose the Off, None, or no-caption option.
If the menu lists only languages, look for a separate control that disables subtitles or captions. Selecting a different language does not turn the text off.
Smart TV, streaming box, or game console
- Start playing the Prime Video title.
- Press Enter, the center button, or the equivalent button on your remote or controller to reveal the playback menu. The exact button depends on the device.
- Open the Closed Caption or Subtitles control.
- Select Off, None, or the equivalent no-caption setting.
Prime Video supports this general connected-device flow on many smart TVs, set-top boxes, and game consoles, but available controls vary by device and model.

Fire TV
While the title is playing, use the Fire TV remote to reveal the Prime Video playback controls. Open the captions or subtitles menu and select the option that turns captions off.
The button sequence can differ between Fire TV models and software versions, so use the in-player captions control rather than relying only on the general Fire TV settings. If the playback controls are hidden, press a directional or center button on the remote to bring them up.

Apple TV
Apple TV uses a different subtitle-management method. Prime Video directs Apple TV viewers to Apple’s subtitle and caption settings rather than guaranteeing the generic remote sequence used on other connected devices. If the in-player option does not work, manage subtitles through the Apple TV accessibility or subtitle settings for your version of tvOS.

Captions, subtitles, and audio description are different controls
Prime Video titles can offer several separate accessibility and language features:
- Subtitles: translated or transcribed dialogue, often shown in a selected language.
- Closed captions: dialogue plus relevant sound information, such as “[door closes]” or “[music playing].”
- Alternative audio: another language or audio track.
- Audio description: spoken descriptions of important visual information.
Turning off captions affects the on-screen text option. Changing the audio track or audio-description setting will not necessarily remove captions. The available choices depend on the particular title and playback device.

If captions are still showing
- Confirm that the movie or episode is actively playing. The caption control may not appear on the title-detail page.
- Tap the screen, move the pointer, press Enter, or press the equivalent remote button to reveal the playback controls.
- Reopen the Closed Caption or Subtitles menu and select the explicit off or no-caption option.
- Make sure you changed captions rather than subtitle language, alternate audio, or audio description.
- On Roku, check Home > Settings > Accessibility or Captions > Captions mode.
- On Apple TV, use the Apple TV subtitle-management method for your device and tvOS version.
- Try the same title on another device only as a diagnostic. Caption behavior and available features can vary by device.
Do not assume that changing the setting on one device or profile automatically changes it everywhere. Device-specific behavior can differ, and Prime Video does not guarantee universal caption-setting persistence across every device and profile.
Need a replacement remote?
A remote is not required if the one supplied with your TV, Fire TV device, streaming box, or console is working. However, if it is lost or damaged, a compatible Fire TV remote can provide the controls needed to open the Prime Video playback menu and select the captions setting. Check the exact Fire TV model and remote compatibility before buying; a specific remote should not be assumed to work with every Fire TV device.
