A Premiere is a one-time shared viewing of an uploaded video. To build an always-on channel, use the Premiere as the launch event, then run separate YouTube Live programming through an encoder or cloud playout service. You can connect eligible events with Live Redirect, but the ongoing stream needs its own setup and monitoring.
What a Premiere does—and what it doesn’t
Before a Premiere, YouTube creates a public watch page that you can share. Viewers can set reminders, comment and chat; you can also add a trailer. During the event, a countdown leads into the uploaded video, which viewers watch together in real time. They can rewind, but cannot skip ahead beyond the portion already played.
After the event, the video stays on your channel as a regular upload, with chat replay available. Its views transfer to the video. The Premiere itself does not continue looping or become a live feed.
Set up the Premiere, then plan the next program
Schedule the launch event
- Upload the finished video in YouTube Studio and choose the Premiere option when scheduling it.
- Choose a countdown if it suits the event, then share the public watch page so viewers can set reminders.
- Describe it as a Premiere or scheduled viewing, not as a livestream: viewers are watching the prepared upload together.
Create a separate live stream
For ongoing programming, create a distinct YouTube Live stream. With an encoder, get the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio and enter them in your software or hardware encoder. YouTube says first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the scheduled start. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Before relying on the stream, check YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and restrictions, run a test, verify the preview and access, and monitor audio and video while it is live. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring rather than assuming a feed is healthy because it started successfully.
Choose how to keep the live feed running
YouTube supports software encoders, standalone hardware encoders and verified encoder products and services. A continuous prerecorded feed can be run with local encoding or a cloud-hosted playout service. YouTube’s encoder directory includes a cloud service described as supporting 24/7 continuous streams of prerecorded videos; that listing is not a comparative test or a guarantee of uptime.

Compare the approaches on the work they require, not just whether they can start a stream:
- Operation: A local setup depends on a computer and encoder staying available. A cloud-hosted service runs playout remotely.
- Continuity and recovery: Check whether the service can loop or schedule prerecorded material and what it does if YouTube drops the feed.
- Monitoring: Decide who will check stream status, picture and sound, and respond to interruptions.
- Archive plan: Decide whether to make local recordings or split programming into shorter sessions.
- Rights and suitability: Confirm you are authorized to use every video and audio element for the intended stream and audience. A video being uploadable or technically streamable does not establish that its rights are cleared.
Bridge viewers between the Premiere and live programming
YouTube Live Redirect can send viewers from an ending Premiere or live stream to another selected Premiere or live stream. YouTube’s current eligibility page says a channel sending viewers must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. Sending viewers to another channel’s live stream also requires that channel’s permission. YouTube recommends creating the destination Premiere before the stream if you want to direct a live audience into it. Check the current Live Redirect requirements and setup in Studio; interface labels and eligibility may change.

Where Redirect is available, select the next event in Studio and tell viewers in chat or on the stream what is coming next. Redirect is a handoff between events, not a way to make the Premiere itself continuous.
Protect replays and keep the program usable
YouTube may automatically archive streams under 12 hours, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, keep an independent local recording or plan shorter sessions and check the archive after each one. See YouTube’s live archive guidance.

Keep the Premiere upload available as its own on-demand entry, and organize shorter live archives or highlights so viewers can find individual programs. For a continuous feed, document who monitors it, what to do if the encoder or connection fails, and how to restart or replace the scheduled programming.
